Overview

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Boulder - Susurro

Ground floor of home, 2 Bedrooms + addl. bed, split level, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-5)

We have updated Susurro by adding on site laundry facilities, new refrigerator with ice maker, freshly painted bedrooms, new light fixtures, freshly sealed colorful kitchen floor and more (new photos coming soon!). We think you will appreciate the improvements, making your stay more comfortable and convenient.

Welcome to Boulder, Colorado...everything you want from a big city, yet it feels like a small town; world-class restaurants and shops, a major university, an abundance of cultural events, a plethora of year-round outdoor activities and lots of music from around the globe.

Minutes from downtown Boulder, walking distance to excellent coffee and tea houses, restaurants, bakery, shopping, well equiped grocery store, trails and more. Our artist’s home is located within a quiet, historic residential district known as Mapleton Hill. 'Susurro' - our sunny and light, very private garden/walk-out apartment has a separate entrance and is part of our recently eco-remodeled home originally built in 1910. Our 750 sq. ft. apartment is colorful, eclectically furnished, with hot water baseboard heating, all domestic water filtered, cork floors, lots of light, antique cooking stove, custom trim, open layout, split level (with two steps) - living room/dining room/kitchen, hand painted floor, and mosaic tiled bathroom floor. Our home is a “come and borrow a cup of organic sugar” kind of home. Please note - Susurro is exceptionally well insulated however, we live upstairs, we are very quiet and we do not wear shoes inside our home. If you need total silence please reconsider - you will hear soft footsteps but never voices and in eight years we have had only two complaints.

'Susurro' is two blocks away from the foothills of the Rockies with great hiking trails, and the continental divide only a thirty-minute drive away. We are a 30 minute drive to Denver; 30 minute drive to Eldora Ski Resort, 45 minute drive to Rocky Mountain National Park, and 1.5-2.25 hour drive to Loveland, Winter Park, Breckenridge and Vail ski areas.

Boulder has year-round sunshine. The winter season usually brings brief snow storms followed by beautiful sunny days. It's not uncommon to have warm weather in the high 60s-70s in February and March. Late spring and summer offers warm days, wonderful thunderstorms and few airborne pests. Falls are warm with cool nights and some of the most amazing displays of light and color.

Well behaved dogs are welcome.

About Bruce Poulter

I am from Medellin, Colombia and am an artist and psychotherapist. I considers Susurro to be an ongoing art Installation as well as the rest of the 'orange house'. Susurro means 'a murmer' in Spanish. It is a custom from Colombia to name your home - hence Susurro. My partner is a bodyworker, 'artist's slave' and musician - playing the mbira (thumb piano) from Zimbabwe.

We have two daughters - one just graduated from college and the other in her final year of college - which makes us old (they think), young (we know)...

We purchased Susurro with the intent of remodeling it - but ended up completely rebuilding it from the foundation up. We were the architects, draftspeople, general contractor, electrician, plumber, interior designer, painters, etc - you get the drift and we are still married - happily.

We have totally enjoyed living here and meeting all the interesting people who have stayed here from different parts of the world.

Bruce Poulter purchased this house in 2004

Why Bruce Poulter chose Boulder

Boulder is a beautiful city with incredible outdoor activities and cultural events. We chose this neighborhood due to its proximity and convenience to both downtown Boulder and mountain trails. We live in the 'orange house' on the property because we think this is the best neighborhood in Boulder. That being said we are available anytime while guaranteeing your privacy.

What makes this house unique

We feel incredibly privileged to live in this house and be able to ride our bikes, walk to nearby trails and cafes and enjoy the many and varied events and activities that Boulder offers. We love the sunshine that abounds in Colorado. Susurro is quiet, private and simultaneously centrally located. We invite you to experience the beauty and comfort first-hand! We speak English and Spanish.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We very much enjoyed your "artist" apartment. Hopefully the baby did not disturb you.

Have a great spring!

Great place for a visit to Boulder

  • 5 of 5

I rented this apartment with a couple friends for a girls' weekend in Boulder. The apartment was great. Colorful, clean, and comfortable. An easy walk to downtown. And dealing with the owner was always smooth and efficient. I would highly reccomend this rental.

BEWARE PURE HELL, Disgusting, filthy bed bug infested BASEMENT apartment.

  • 1 of 5

The other reviews are either from people that have no class, like dirt, bugs and or a trashy home inside and out. Upon my arrival at 5 pm the door was left open for me. I literally thought that I was in the wrong place. I was greeted by two bags of somebody else's trash, dirty dishes, unmade beds, dirty sheets, dirty dishes in the sink, compost tin filled, dirty towels and blankets everywhere and a stench throughout the dump. Also NO heat for the first two days! Then it was on a timer regulated by him, cold and damp basement apartment, got me sick.

I contacted the owner and he replied 5 hours later with no excuse really, but the maid would come in the am if I still wanted her to!

I cleaned it myself, had no where to go and a car full of stuff, with my dog and paid him a lot of money!

I will share what I submitted to VRBO AND THE OWNER'S RESPONSE AS WELL! I HAD TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL, WAS BITTEN ALIVE BY BED BUGS AND HE DISMISSED IT AND WANTED TO KEEP ALL OF MY MONEY...MY BANK WORKED WITH ME AND VRBO STOOD BEHIND ME ALTHOUGH THEY CANT DO MUCH , THEY ARE AN ADVERTISING AGENCY , BUT THEY WALKED ME THROUGH IN WHAT TO DO!

Hi (VRBO)

Thank you for your time today and for your promptness and professionalism.

Unfortunately a bad apple can leave a sour taste as this one sure has!!

When I arrived at the home on the 8th of February alone with my dog it was approximately 5 pm. I found my way in and seriously thought that I was in the wrong place. I found two bags of trash at my feet as I opened

when I woke up I looked where I was scratching and found many bites, welts on my body, many on my hip, arms, hands and back!

I told him that I wanted to leave immediately and that I did not know where I would be going so I would have to get a hotel for the night at least. He offered not even an apology and told me to read my rental agreement!!

Bottom line is I got out, bank refunded me my monies after proving with my visit to hospital and rental agreement. etc.. Lots of work on my end and still not recovered. Many costs with cleaning ( dry cleaning everything, dog bites, my bites, no where to go, pretty depressing situation!!!!

Run people RUN!!!

He offered my deposit back basically and with that I would not be able to write a review. I wonder what this man is on. Talk about being stonewalled .. I think he is half of what that word is as well. Wow, you just can't make this stuff up!! I will use VRBO again and will always use a credit card!

Owner's Response: We regret the unfortunate nature of our guest’s experience. It is important to us to provide our guests with a private, comfortable, interesting, quiet and welcoming refuge. The negative tone of this review speaks volumes, is painfully revealing about our guest and reflects our guest’s viewpoint – which we wholeheartedly disagree with. Her disregard of other people’s experiences as having validity (e.g., previous guest reviews and owners) and to insult our previous guests and us is unacceptable. Clearly Susurro was not a good fit for this guest. Admittedly we made a big mistake by not informing our cleaning service of the correct date to come and clean! We felt terrible about this – this is the only time this has happened in 8 years. We made multiple attempts to remedy this unfortunate mistake (by offering refunds, paying to stay in a hotel, cleaning the next day, etc.) and were told that it was unnecessary and understandable. We appreciated her understanding and nonetheless had our cleaning service clean the following morning. Somehow this openness and understanding evaporated a week later, when our guest announced that she was leaving and wanted a full refund, for all her stated reasons – all but one (our cleaning error) of which we find to be untrue. Susurro is clean, has never had any issues with bugs – (to be certain we fumigated and cleaned everything even though there were no signs of bugs anywhere), guests do have complete control of the heat, and it matters deeply to us that our guests feel welcome, heard, and safe at all times. Unfortunately our guest felt otherwise, in spite of our best efforts.

Happy House

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 3 nights while we helped our son move to town. This is a great alternative to a hotel room and we look forward to many more visits. It's in a great location if you enjoy walking rather than driving everywhere. The house definitely is funky and creative and there is so much to look it in the exterior details.

The apartment has everything you need to feel comfortable and the hosts were clearly willing to accommodate any of our needs we may have had. Even though they live above the apartment, it felt very private. You enter the yard through your own gate and you don't feel as though you're bothering the hosts. You can hear the footsteps of people above, just as you would in any 2-level house, but it didn't feel bothersome at all, but rather like good energy of family moving around.

There are several hiking trails just at the end of the street, which was nice.

It was very clean, comfortable and we look forward to visiting again! Thank you for opening your home! Loved it!

Charming, cheery, and convenient (and fascinating people to rent from)

  • 4 of 5

We--a family of three--spent the month of July 2014 at Susurro and hope we'll be able to come back again someday. The owners have done a wonderful job of fitting everything you need into the tight space. And we loved the bright colors and artistic creativity and craftsmanship. You have to appreciate a bohemian and funky style to like this place, but we certainly did. (Hint: see how many mailboxes you and your kids can find, and be sure to add your hopes to the wishing fence.) Our 9-year-old spent hours on the wide wood sills (window seats for a small person) in the green bedroom, looking out at the ground level plantings and feeling like she was in a fairy garden. (Note, there is a drop-off between the hall and living room, so not a good place for kids under 4.) I loved getting to take my morning tea outside and look up at Mt. Sanitas (over the fence) and think about the history that the ancient apple and maple trees outside have witnessed. The tiny desk built in next to the fridge was just big enough for me to keep up with work. It's a five-minute walk to North Boulder Park, ten minutes to Ideal Market and coffee shops along Broadway, ten minutes West to the Mt. Sanitas trailhead, twenty minutes one direction to the North Boulder Rec Center, twenty the other way down to the Boulder Mall. So if you're reasonably fit you could enjoy a weekend or week in Boulder without a car. Almost anywhere in town is within 15-20 minutes by car. The only drawbacks for us were that there's not much light over the table and that we did not find the queen bed in the blue room completely comfortable (although Bruce obligingly provided chocks to raise the head when we realized part of the problem was a sloping floor). We took the gel mat off the blue bed and liked the plain futon mattress better--you'll have to see for yourself. The double bed in the green room was great. The windows are large (covering the whole West wall of the living room/kitchen), but because the apartment is partly underground it was cool even before Bruce turned on the swamp cooler. We had one fascinating conversation with Bruce about the construction of this house and his work as a rolfer. He and his wife are clearly people of integrity and imagination, which helps give this place a really positive feel. We visit family in town each summer. In the past we've stayed at hotels, but Susurro was WAY more fun and comfortable for less than a motel much farther from the center of things.

Owner's Response: Dear Patricia: Thank you for your kind words and detailed review of our apartment Susurro. You and your family are welcome any time! It was a pleasure having you. Warmly, Bruce Ps - It is curious as we have had people love the comfort of the queen bed mattress however upon your review and our assessment it is time for a replacement as well as improving the light over the kitchen table.

Absolutely wonderful downstairs apartment. I left a note telling the owner I wanted to move in. Wonderfully quite. Wonderful finishing touches.
