Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Nosara - Casa de Memphis I

House, 2 Bedrooms + Bunk Area, 2.5+ Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Hang Ten, Chill Out, Go Native, “Is that a real monkey?”

Nosara, The way Costa Rica used to be, today!

Casa de Memphis is located in the northern corner of Nosara’s Playa Pelada where the Ostional Wildlife Reserve and the Nosara River meet the Pacific Ocean at front door of Casa de Memphis. While Playa (Beach) Pelada is very secluded, it is still convenient to shopping and the other amenities. If you do not mind a troop of monkeys living in the trees above and an array of birds not commonly found in a front yard, this is the place for you. (Some would refer to the location as “Critter Central”.) Beach, wildlife, peace and quiet, and very few people. (Just look over the photos and see for yourself.) Located within a small group of eight houses, only four available for rent, at the north entrance of this secluded beach. Because very few people know about this small enclave, you will almost always have the whole secluded section of Playa Pelada to yourself. And it does not stop there.

You have the whole beach to yourself as you walk down the beach to one of the finest restaurants in the state of Guanacaste, La Luna. As you walk to La Luna, you can check out the tidal pools and the marine aquarium left by the tide. Every hour the beach area offers up a new setting as the tide comes in and out. Playa Pelada is the best place to swim of the three beaches in Nosara and kids can't get enough of the tidal pools. The reason for this is that there is a reef just offshore that tames the swell.

On the way to La Luna you will pass the only beach bar in Nosara, Olga's. La Luna and Olga’s are located at the south entrance of Playa Pelada and this is where the small fishing boats come in and out of and is also a great local surfing spot. If you walk down there early in the morning you can buy fish directly from the fishermen as come in at embarrassingly low prices.

Casa de Memphis I (Remember there are two Casa de Memphis’, I and II) was constructed in 2007 and is a fully air conditioned beach house with two master bedrooms, each with its own massive bathroom, vaulted ceiling, private walkout balcony and a King and Queen size bed with new mattresses as of 2014. The bigger of the two bedrooms has a bunk bed off to the side carved into its own area. The house is fully furnished and equipped for a party of 6. The houses sits behind a secure gated entrance at the end of the road with secure off street parking. No through traffic as you sit on the front porch and try and figure out what kind of humming bird that is. As of January 2009, the house has high speed, wireless internet.

Casa de Memphis is set up for the weekly renter. Very child friendly with a crib and high chair. (Because of the way the house is constructed it is hard for children to do any real damage, although some have tried.) The house comes with High Speed Wireless Internet, cable TV, linens, a full size safe for your valuables (large and small, i.e. laptop computers) that weighs 500 pounds and is bolted to the floor, weekly house cleaning, monkeys, and they are all included at no extra charge. The house is managed by a couple that live just up the hill and are always on hand to answer a question or take care of something. There is even a comprehensive black book with loads of information about the house and the area that is regularly updated by the owner. Everything you need is already there. Beach chairs, beach towels and much much more.......

Tired of cooking? We can arrange for a private chef to do all of the shopping, come to the house and prepare the menu of your choice at a mere fraction of what dinning out would be. This is the best bargain in Nosara and the wife of the owner of the house takes full advantage of this. Imagine, someone comes to the house at 17:00 (5PM), cleans, prepares dinner, cleans up afterwards and departs by 20:00 (8PM). All this for much less than taking the family out for dinner. Tell us what you want and we will make it happen. (Most people choose to take advantage of this for the night of the day they arrive.)

NOTE: Nosara, like many other beach communities, is experiencing a building boom. The northern end of Playa Pelada, where the house is located, is the only location free from the early morning construction noise, truck traffic and the associated dust. Dust is a serious issue from December to May due to the lack of rain. While there is very little traffic in front of the house we still apply molasses to the road out front to seal off the dust. (Place smells like pancakes for the first week.)

Security: Costa Ricans are by nature a very passive people. That said petty theft is an on going issue that has subsided greatly in the last year. Nothing neutralizes this issue more than common since. CdM I & II have monitored alarm systems. No other house available for rent has this level of security.

Booking: There are two ways to book Casa de Memphis I or II. VIA THE OWNER: simply send the owner an email stating which house and what dates you want. His reply will confirm the dates and the rate. If this is agreeable then the owner will send you a rental agreement to print out, read, sigh and return with a deposit in the form of a US dollar check or Canadian post order. All funds and transactions are in US dollars. 60 days prior to your arrival you will send in the whole rental fee. Your deposit converts to a security deposit and is refunded back to you after you depart. VIA CREDIT CARD: VRBO now has a “book it now” feature where you can use a credit card for the whole process. You will need to purchase a $49 security deposit policy that is non refundable. The choice is yours.

About Dave Caywood

David & Mary Caywood have owned Casa

de Memphis since the year it was built back in 2007. Mary is a professor at the University of Memphis while David flies for FedEx. The management company that looks after the house is owned by Tiffany and Frank and they have a staff of about 20 employees. With Frank being German and David an airline pilot they have come together with the following management program. “Correct it before it breaks. Repair it when it does. Remove it when you can’t.” This attitude alone is one of the reasons why everyone goes away planning their return and the guest comments reflect just that. The one down side to David & Mary’s beach house, it is often booked up well in advance but if you are flexible, they can usually get you in.

Dave Caywood purchased this house in 2007

Why Dave Caywood chose Nosara

We were looking to move down to Costa Rica and began the process of looking for a new home. We literally got out a map and started going down the Pacific coast doing a Google search on each and every town on the map. When we saw large scale concrete high rise buildings, the search moved on. Unfortunately, what we were looking for in Costa Rica, was long gone until we happened upon Nosara.

Nosara is best described as a perfect mix of human existence in a natural setting. The monkeys do not run from you but stare back. The beach is natural and there are no buildings to be seen and best of all because there are no large scale condominium projects. You basically have the place to yourself and that is why we bought the house where we did.

And the name, Casa de Memphis? It came about as a product of need. As in most of Central and South America, there are no addresses, instead every house has a name. We wanted a name that best described the house and location but they were already taken. Next we wanted a name that gringos could remember. Also take into consideration the fact that people in Nosara do not use there last name and we were quickly referred to as David and Mary from Memphis and in the absence of anything else, Casa de Memphis it became.

What makes this house unique

Location, Location, Location and the house is the best example of just that. On the beach, by the river, next to the wildlife preserve. Families with children are especially attracted to the house because they are just steps away from the beach, jungle and all of the animals Costa Rica has to offer. The animals are actually best seen from the front porch while sitting in one of the four rocking chairs. Highly addictive, no cure!

What a wonderful experience, so much better than we anticipated. My wife and 15 month old son didn't know what to expect as we drove down the potholed roads to what was apparently the middle of the rainforest, when we pulled up to this beautiful house. It is incredible both inside and out, accented with the most beautiful woods you can imagine. It was roomy, clean, and had all of the amenities we could want. In the morning we would go out on our balcony and watch howler monkeys, veriegated squirrels, parrots, parakeets and cotamundis playing in the trees - right there in front of us! The beach is about 200 ft from the house, and on the way to it we would see many multi colored lizards including iguanas, as well as brilliantly orange-colored crabs and hermit crabs scurrying away. We had this beautiful beach all to ourselves, and found so many colorful and uniquely shaped shaped shells. The water was perfect. We found a coconut the first day, and man was it good. At night, we would sit on the front porch and relax with a cigar and beverage, and you could hear the ocean at the perfect volume, better than any Corona commercial. Even though it seems you are miles away from anywhere, the are little pockets carved away in the jungle that have some of the most marvelous resteraunts and bars I have ever seen. They have completely stocked kitchens and bars, and everything is SOOO fresh. Some were upscale with infitiy pool bars, and while at others I kept waitng for Jimmy Buffet to walk up and have a Margarita. At one place, a couple of kinkajou (raccoon family) walked right out of the jungle up to our table, which my son loved. They were all very reasonbly priced. And if total laid back relaxation and fabulous dining isn't enough, we took surfing lessons (the area is famous for its surfing), and went on an incredibley exhilarating zip line canopy tour. So many other psoitives, like the amazingly few biting insects, the sights and sounds, the people, the weather, and the lack of crowds gives this place the perfect mix of relaxation and excitement. Another crummy week in paradise . . .

Twelve thumbs up!

If you are looking for a place to stay on a secluded beach surrounded by incredible beauty and wildlife, adventure and some really good eateries close by, Casa de Memphis I may well be your ticket to Nirvana. CdM I is well appointed, clean and has all the essential comforts needed to kick back and relax. Lots to do and see in the surrounding area, although we liked Playa Pelada just outside of our door the best . Our group of 6 - (2 couples and 2 grown sons) had plenty of space and were comfortable although the 2 guys had to sleep on the couch and a cot that was available (there's also a bunk bed for younger kids). We pretty much split eating in and out. There was a pescaderia a few kilometers east of Nosara that had fabulous fresh fish (tuna, snapper, shrimp) to bring home and cook and a couple of local groceries that were well stocked for the expats and the tourists visiting the area. We ate very well. This is a special location in Costa Rica to enjoy nature and Casa de Memphis I is the perfect place to stay to take full advantage of it.

Excellent property and even better owner

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing Christmas at new years staying at Casa de Memphis I. The property is in really great shape and is just as described and pictured. The local property manager was attentive, and the one minor repair that was needed during our stay was accomplished quickly and painlessly.

We brought our 4 children, ages 6-12. The older ones had a great time surfing in Guiones, and the younger ones found all the boogie boarding and swimming they could want. This property is truly as close to the water as one can get. (Costa Rican law limits building on the water, preserving a nice natural boundary between the home and the sea.)

The best part of our experience was actually working with Dave the owner. He has lots of good information for us ahead of time on renting a car, planning of the trip, etc. He sent us email at various points before and during to make sure we would be all taken care of. It was a great experience.

Heaven on the beach

  • 5 of 5

Nosara and Casa De Memphis was the ideal ending destination for a 2 week tour of Costa Rica with my wife and kids. Having spent over a week in LaFotuna and Monteverde, we were looking for a relaxing few days on the Pacific coast at a comfortable home. We hit the jackpot with Casa De Memphis. The home was well furnished, including one of the best kitchens of any VRBO home in which we've stayed, owner and manager who were very communicative and responsive and a killer location. The house is 100 yards from a postcard perfect private beach that can rival any beach we've been to on the east or west coast of the U.S. And the town of Nosara was fantastic. It's 'costa rica rural', filled with expats, vacationers and surfers all tickled to have found their nirvana. Tons of outdoor activities, lots of casual but great restaurants, and an ideal spot to 'just do nothing.' Knowing what we now know, we would have come earlier and stayed later at Casa De Memphis. If you are looking for the quintessential Pacific Coast Costa Rica experience, you need not look any further. You won't do better than this rental in Nosara.

Coasta Rica and Casa de Memphis Rock!

  • 5 of 5

Casa de Memphis was the perfect setting for a first-time visit to Costa Rica! The house is well appointed and in great condition. Being so close to the beach (Playa Pelada) was fantastic. It really was like having a private beach! Low tide is an excellent time for exploring the tidal pools and caves. Just a short walk away is Playa Guiones, a completely different beach experience, especially for surfers and people watching. There is also good proximity to other activities in Nosara and Guiones. I highly recommend the zip lining experience. I will definitely be back!

Absolutely great place...cant wait to go back

  • 5 of 5

Casa de Memphis is a fabulous vacation spot. This was my first trip to Costa Rica. The house was in great shape, and as clean as it could get. We went offshore fishing for 3 days and caught big fish (marlin, sailfish, wahoo, and mahi) each day along with a lot of smaller fish (tuna and bonita) to keep us busy. The zip line tour was incredible. 2 of the many restaurants are a short walk down the beach from the house and the food was great. But the best part of the the trip was enjoying the house (especially the home cooked meals from the recommended chef....very reasonable) and the beach. I cant wait to go back next year. Best vacation we have ever had.
