Lift your gaze to the original ceiling roses, or look upon the hold iron fireplaces, whisper-pale carpets and dainty ornaments from the comfort of the sitting room’s sofa. And you only need to stretch a little further for Clapham Common’s green space – a stone’s throw away from your front door, with glitzy Chelsea just across the river.

Potted history

Your hosts have lived in Lavender Gardens for fifteen years, and they wouldn’t be anywhere else. By day they tend to their lawn and sun themselves on the common, and come nightfall, they’re regulars on Battersea’s eclectic restaurant scene. Their current hot spot? The ultra-hip Cornish Tiger.

Flowerbed dreaming

With two walls of glass facing out into the garden, you’ll feel as though you’re dining al fresco whatever the weather. But when the sun does shine, a swift slide of the doors and you can be outside firing up the BBQ, or, sunbathing on the well-kept lawn.

And, taking inspiration from its Victorian roots, you’ll find plenty of flora inside too – watercolour irises hang prettily in the master bedroom, while traditional bouquets brighten the living room’s lampshade and cushions.

Sprawling Clapham’s size is more easily grasped when viewing the endless terraced houses from a train window heading into Waterloo, or when consulting a tube map – the Northern line uniquely runs through three stations with the same name (Clapham North, Common and South).

As with most green spaces close to the City, the area started out as a building site for mansion owners seeking a respite from town, but was later filled with smaller abodes for those on the lower foothills of the social mountain – the ‘man on the Clapham omnibus' is still used as a benchmark in English courts as to whether a party has acted in the way a reasonable person should.

Its geographical spread now supports residents of an diverse diaspora, from international students to a recent influx of young Irish professionals that collectively go under the name of ‘Clappers’. Hands also come together for the vibrant gay scene of this cosmopolitan town-within-a-town, with the spangly Clapham Street Party vibrating with false eye-lashes and Danny La Rue hair each summer.

Locals head to their own version of Nobu, Tsunami on Voltaire Road, for sashimi and sake, while Venn Street Records next to the Common serves ambitious house cocktails, perfect for this classy mini-cosmos of an area.
