Beautiful 180' view of the Ocean and East Hawaii's coast from Hilo to Kapoho Landing, from your own lanai.

Sparkling new 1100 sq ft home with luxury linens, beds & custom bathroom.

Centralized kitchen, complete with all amenities.

Wander through lush gardens with exotic orchids, rare palms, fish ponds,& tall flowering tropical hardwoods.

Relax & get away from it all, while being only a few minutes drive from downtown Hilo.

Centrally located access to all East Hawaii activities: Farmers markets, Volcanoes National Park, Kapoho Hot Ponds, Hawaii Botanical Gardens, local beaches and parks, surfing, diving, Mauna Kea nightly 'star parties' at 9000 ft, and more.

Unwind and relax on Hawaiian Time at Noe's Nest!: A lovely 15 minute drive from Hilo airport, you'll wind up the hills through neat ranches scattered with cattle, horses, sheep & goats. Our home is located in a small private subdivision of 3+ acre homesteads.

At a perfect 1200 feet elevation, you'll enjoy warm tropical days & delightfully cool nights year round. Nighttime showers usually ending before dawn keep our hillsides green. 'Noe;'s Nest ' faces due East, for gorgeous sunrises above the ocean from your comfortable king bed complete with luxury linens and snugly quilts.

Your 1100 sq ft custom home has 2 large bedrooms : the master with a king sized bed, the 2nd bedroom with 1 double and 2 single beds. We can set up a port-a-crib for your tiny tot. Clean & crisp, with tropical decor, your house has a well-appointed kitchen, bathroom and large shower, spacious living and dining area. Your full-sized ocean view covered lanai (porch) will make you feel right at home in our upcountry paradise.

Open your eyes & take in the stunning 180' view of the blue ocean, with Hilo town sparkling on the bay. Gazing out to sea has a way of renewing the spirit, now matter the season.

Just minutes below Noe's Nest in Hilo, you can stay in town and find lots of local color, or turn North or South for a day of adventure. You East Hawaii adventures can be quiet and subdued, or active and exuberant. Driving up the Hamakua Coast, you find some of the simplest and most stunning views anywhere in Hawaii. Getting out to explore small towns and our beautiful parks you come close to Hawaii at its pristine best. Remember to practice your aloha everywhere you go, and you will be rewarded with wonderful memories. Smile and relax, don't rush....your on Hawaiian time now! Forget your watch.

Miss your pooch? You can borrow a friendly dog..: ...or visit Merlin the llama in his pasture. Our pet Nigerian goats will beg you for an alphafa treat. Wander through the hillside landscape full of exotic orchids, fragrant tropical flowers, rare palms and tall flowering hardwoods.

Relax on a bench by one of 2 waterlily ponds, or bask in the sun on your recliner with a cool drink. Get active or get lazy, as the spirit moves you! Breakfast on sweet apple bananas & papaya. Pick a fragrant gardenia for your bedside, or your hair. We've found no jewel can match the beauty of a fresh gardenia.

About Nora Waters

David & Nora are longtime residents of Hilo. David is a master wood bowl turner and built our homes and gardens here in Hilo. Nora is an CNS, MSN, RN, traveler, animal lover. We lived in Alaska for 18 great years prior to moving back to Hawaii to raise our family of a son and 2 daughters. Love our home here in Waiakea Uka and sharing it with friends and family!

Nora Waters purchased this house in 1999

Why Nora Waters chose Hilo

We found this 3 acre Waiakea Uka property after months of searching on the east side of the Big Island. It is a dream come true for us to be able to live here and share it. The climate is wonderful; the breezes balmy and the night delightfully cool. Night rains keep our plants lush. We love animals: our dwarf Nigerian goats, chickens, 2 dogs and cats, and so do our guests. We live a casual life, grateful for all we have. We work hard to keep everything clean, comfortable & welcoming for our guests so they can just kick back and enjoy themselves!

What makes this house unique

Sunny days, cool nights, nightly rains that keep Hilo GREEN! Hundreds of rare palms, our bee hive, our ponds, lilies and lotus flowers, and other seasonal bloomers: orchids, vireyas of many colors, ti, hibiscus, brugmansia. David's wood shop. Beautiful walks up the hill and grand views of the ocean from Hilo Bay to Kapoho lighthouse. The company of friends, family, animals and the god sent trade winds that keep us a unique spot on earth. The lovely drive up to the house with striking views of Mauna Kea, Panewa Forest, & Hilo Bay. Driving to work at 6am is a joy, and how many people can say that? We are grateful for this very special spot and hope you enjoy its unique perspective on East Hawaii.

Best VRBO ever

  • 5 of 5

This is the best VRBO rental we have ever stayed in. The 1100 sq. ft. house is very comfortable, extraordinarily well equipped, private, and reasonably priced. The acreage itself is a delight to the Canadian eye, especially in winter. It is really a mini-arboretum with dozens of varieties of palm trees and flowering shrubs, and masses of flowers everywhere. Dave and Nora, the hosts, could not be more welcoming or more helpful. If your aim on a Hawaiian holiday is to spend your days on a beach and your nights at a club, then stick to Waikiki because this is not the place for you. If, however, your ideal Hawaiian holiday is to live in a private tropical garden, shop for fresh fruits and vegetables at a local farmers’ market, and count the orchids growing in the ditches as you go for a walk up a country road, then Noe’s Nest is the place for you. It was for us.

Owner's Response: Thank you to our guests from Saskatoon! We enjoyed having you enjoy a relaxed stay at Noe's Nest and sharing a few moments with you on your lanai in the evening. It is great when the place we love coincides with the place our visitors feel is exactly what they need. That's a perfect arrangement! I was glad to see you taking your daily walk up the hill above our house to take in the cool air and the beautiful views of the ocean and forests below. Thank you for coming and PLEASE come back and see us and Noe's Nest again soon. I know it provided a sweet break from Canadian winter! Aloha, Nora and David

Noe's Nest earns its five stars

  • 5 of 5

The Nest is quiet and roomy, with a gorgeous view and easy access to Hilo, Kilauea and the mountains. The property itself is a botanical paradise, planted with significant tropical trees, ferns and flowers. The kitchen is generously appointed, with several local cookbooks for inspiration - we cooked here every night.

If you're interested in woodworking, then you absolutely must talk with Dave, a master craftsman and longtime member of the western Hawai'i woodworking community.

We'd recommend this location for others, and would return again ourselves.

Owner's Response: Thank you for visiting us Percy! It is really a happy thing for us when people come to visit Noe's Nest and find it fits them like a glove. Very glad you enjoyed your visit so much! It is a nice kitchen, which allows you to be with your family while you cook and see off the lanai out the window too! Please come back and visit again and perhaps suggest us to friends, We do have a lot of Seattle folks who like to come visit Noe's Nest! Aloha, And thank you for your praise of David's bowl and wood work. He will be in the Craft fair of the Merry Monarch again this year April 8,9, 10 and 11. Aloha, Nora and David Waters

A Third Wonderful Visit to Noe's Nest

  • 4 of 5

After a 3-week stay in Honolulu... I traded in the noise and congestion and concrete high-rise landscape

for . . . the complete opposite. A beautiful country cottage high above Hilo -- where peace and tranquility surround you. You've traded in the sound of a thousand cars...for the gentle crowing of roosters.

Animals are a part of Noe's Nest !! Indeed -- Bijou, the friendly cat, and little Kiwi, the dog-- seem to

inhabit the long, beautiful lanai. Kiwi waits to join you for a walk up the quiet country roads.

And Noe's Nest Master bedroom is a . . . .Shangri-La. Nothing less ! You rise . . . smelling the sweet

fragrance of Nora's giant Cattleya orchids on the dining table . . . filling the entire house. From the large

windows by your King-size wicker bed . . . you see the glorious sky at day-break .

Thank you once again..... Nora and Dave- for offering us such beauty.

with very warmest aloha,

Joanne Strauss

Owner's Response: Joanne it was delightful to host you again! I enjoyed catching up with you and your life and family. Glad Ms. Bijou entertained you.Glad I also have a gate to keep the big dog off your lanai unless you invite her! So glad it did the trick for you both. Yes its a different world than Honolulu, that's for certain! I lived there for a few years in the 70's but did not recognize it for the same place when I visited last January. Very busy, too busy for me. Please think of us again when you want to get away! Much aloha, Nora and David.

Wonderful hideaway in a gorgeous place!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a wonderful week in Noe's Nest. We were pleasantly surprised at how large the cottage was-- the photos really do not do it justice! There was absolutely everything we needed there and it was immaculately cleaned. It is very easy to get to Hilo and other parts of the island-- really conveniently located, but we felt like we were in a very secluded location, far from the bustle. The bed was super comfy. The owners were very kind and helpful. Best thing--- the animals! Resident dogs and cats kept us company (we were missing our animals from home) and the goats were an added bonus. We have a goat farm back home, so when I read that there were goats here, it really made me choose this place. So, if you want a country experience on the beautiful Big Island, Noe's Nest is for you. We hope to be back soon. Julie and Wade

Notes:
Noe's Nest is a great place to enjoy the birds of Hawaii! We have a large selection of natural history books featuring local birds to help you identify them. The morning is filled with the music of the Chinese thrush as they trade complex and varied songs, which they are able to repeat perfectly. We have several pairs of the indigenous I'o, the Hawaiian Hawk which hunts by day across the pastures below, sometimes landing in our tall trees. Indigenous Pueo, the Hawaiian owl hunt at night. Maynah's chatter quiets at sunset as their families quiet for sleep. Bright cardinals and several types of thrushes come to the feeder near your lanai table. At night the soft call of the frogs and toads in our ponds lull us to sleep.
