Cat Island Overview: Untainted by tourism, Cat Island is the sixth-largest island in The Bahamas. The fishhook-shaped island — some 48 miles long and 1 to 4 miles wide and lies about 325 miles southeast of Miami. Named after the pirate Arthur Catt, it’s located near the Tropic of Cancer, between Eleuthera and Long Island. It has one of the best climates in The Bahamas, with temperatures in the high 60s during the short winters, rising to the mid-80s in summer, with trade winds making the place even more comfortable. With its pristine virgin beaches, Cat Island is one of the most beautiful islands in The Bahamas, and it is so little visited that it's inexpensive and still feels undiscovered. Many local historians claim that Cat Island residents were the first to see Columbus. The great explorer himself was believed by some to have been welcomed here by the peaceful Arawaks. Beautiful beaches offer an array of water sports. Visitors can go swimming or snorkeling at several places.

Boathouse housekeeping and maintenance: The Boathouse is professionally cleaned and maintained.

Property manager on-island to assist with any questions or requests you may have. Property manager will also assist with car rental reservations, restaurant recommendations, grocery store/liquor store/wine shop directions, airport pickup details and directions to not-to-miss sights.

There is a large lending library at the Boathouse which includes many new fiction and non-fiction books.

Numerous Caribbean cookbooks and favorite Bahamian recipes are located in our library.

*****Toyota 4 Runner is available for rent by the week, located at the Boathouse (in our garage)*****

Historical

Hermitage on Mt. Alvernia

This island's distinct virtue is that it is home to the highest point in the Bahamas--Mount Alvernia--an astounding 206 feet (63 meters) above sea level On its peak is a monastery called The Hermitage, built by Monsignor Jerome Hawkes, who came to The Bahamas as an Architect and an Anglican priest to repair Anglican churches on Long Island. He was later ordained as a Roman Catholic Priest and became known as Monsignor Jerome Hawkes.

Deveaux Mansion

The ruins of an 18th-century plantation house.

Columbus Point

One of the many Indian caves which honeycomb the island, and a conch shell monument to Christopher Columbus, a testament to the locals' undying belief that here marks his first landfall, much to the dismay of the nearby San Salvadorians, who insist that the honor belongs to them.

Boating/Sailing & Diving

Since the day they were first discovered by ship, the 700 islands in The Bahamas have increasingly become a magnet for sea vessels. Fuel up. Chart a course. Uninhabited cays, hidden coves, annual regattas, and modern marinas will sweeten the voyage.

Diving

Coral reefs. Blue holes. Walls. Caves. Shipwrecks. Sharks. Dolphins. Stingrays. The variety of islands in The Bahamas presents a variety of diving experiences. Beginners and experts are welcome. Lessons and guides can be found throughout the islands.

Blue Hole; Out on the bank, this circular depression leads to an 80- to 100-foot descent along the outer walls. Inside the opening, divers often encounter schools of fish, large grouper, and Caribbean reef sharks.

White Hole Reef

This reef expresses another phenomenon unusual to The Bahamas: circular depressions in the limestone basin that form flat basins surrounded by coral mounds. These sites serve as an oasis for solitary reef and schooling fish.

Fishing

Bonefishing has become a local favorite within The Islands Of The Bahamas. Bonefishing takes place in the flats, where guides slowly pole small flat-bottomed boats for anglers or the truly dedicated quietly stalk these elusive fish by wading through knee-deep water. These quicksilver fighters, weighing up to 15 pounds, inspire both fly fishermen and spin casters alike with their power and speed.

Unpredictable and wily, the bonefish are often found in schools of 100 or more, making for exciting bursts of action. Don’t try to eat these bottom skimmers—you’ll quickly realize how they got their name.

Nathaniel 'Top Cat' Gilbert, a native of Cat Island, is an expert fishing guide and Certified Bonefishing Champion, with years of experience. He is a people person, likes to entertain and demonstrate fishing techniques. He knows where all of the good fishing spots are and guarantees that you will see fish.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The Boathouse, Molly S.,Jackson, Michigan Date of stay: December 20-28,2009

The Boathouse was exactly what the website pictures promised and more. It even felt roomier than the pictures indicated. Every item you've chosen for the house is of the highest quality. I never looked for a thing that wasn't available: flashlights, lighters, kitchen utensils, etc. The linens were wonderful and plentiful. We loved going through the guest binder and learning the ins-and-outs of Cat Island: where to eat, how to get around, sights to see, history, activities... Your insight there is priceless. We spent many hours on the Pigeon Cay beach and took long walks. I think we probably saw other people maybe a dozen times in the week we were there, but it was usually the same 3 or 4. No one ever bothered us or disrupted our peace and enjoyment in any way. We felt like we were in our own romantic world. The water was amazing; the sand like powdered sugar. The palm frond tiki hut even sheltered us from passing rainshowers. Leslie was a very nice hostess for a Christmas Eve meal at their resort. She also easily arranged a rental car for us, even had it delivered there at the resort. The Cat Island experience is very unique and one I will always remember. I'm sure we will visit again, although probably in the spring or early summer to avoid some of the inclement weather that can muddle up the winter season. I also have a few couples from work who are interested in the Boathouse, and I'm sharing great reviews with them, too. One of the couples is a pair of avid divers who spend lots of time around the Caribbean. Although they usually travel resort-style, they also seek out a getaway like your place every year or two. Watch for the Baldwins from Michigan, I bet they'll be your guest someday.

In closing, a lot of friends and family have asked would we do it again. I have said, without hesitation, yes! You have a lovely getaway spot on a special island. Thank you so much for allowing us to be your guests. We look forward to a chance to stay again.

Relaxation at its BEST!

  • 5 of 5

Where do I even begin when it comes to putting into words my wonderful stay at the Boathouse? If you’re even questioning staying at the Boathouse or wondering if everything is good to go since the hurricane, you can rest assured everything is the way it should be, perfect. My fiancée and I stayed at the Boathouse for twelve nights and truly still didn’t have enough time. The Boathouse is truly a relaxing place and somewhere I can’t wait to visit again. Having traveled a lot in my life and stayed at so many great places, your house was truly in my top three! The attention to detail in every aspect of your house is truly amazing. From the great king hammock on the porch to the “at home feeling” of the house, I was truly blown away. Your website doesn’t even begin to explain how wonderful your house or the beaches truly are. The Boathouse has all the amenities and more as the website reflects. If you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing, and perfectly secluded beach then look no further. There really isn’t much more you can ask for besides the amenities that are already included.

The island as a whole was truly a great place to get away from it all. We were truly amazed and happy of how “un commercialized” the island truly is. Jennifer and I are very much the type of people who enjoy little quite places like Cat Island with people second to none. The locals were really great! The fact that a little nine-year-old boy stopped us and asked for a ride was truly something that shocked me but shows just how safe and comfortable the island locals are. Also if you’re looking to fish, I highly recommend Ricky, he may not have the best-looking boat but after three and a half hours we were twenty five fish deep in the cooler with a huge twenty five plus pound red snapper.

Overall, I would rate the vacation a 9 out of 10, with the Boathouse earning a 10 out of 10, and the price was very cheap. I can’t believe Mark and Sarah rent their house for so cheap to be truthful but it’s something I liked ha-ha. You were so right about Cat Island and I now understand how you could so easily fall in love with the place. Again thank you for your great hospitality and letting us share a piece of your welcoming and loving home. Until Jen and I return again, like the old sailors say, “Fair winds and calm seas”. Thanks again for everything, this was a dream vacation come true. Cat Island and the locals simply ROCK!

Spectacular deck + gorgeous beach + lovely island=perfection

  • 4 of 5

We've spent the better part of 20 years staying on the Out Islands, and The Boathouse is really a special place. With 360 degree views of the bay and a bit of the ocean (contrary to another review, you can, in fact, see the ocean from the deck), it's almost like you're staying in a really cozy treehouse–except the bed is wonderful, and you have the benefit of a huge kitchen and an outdoor shower.

In terms of food, gourmet meals are not why you go to the islands, but Da Smoke Pot, Shanna's Cove, and produce from Danny are all great recommendations. Like others, we found it hard to tear ourselves away and did most of our own cooking at the house. If you plan your trip well (ask when the food boat comes in!), there is plenty to choose from at the grocery store. It's not Whole Foods, so if you need something specific, bring it. We forgot coffee (!) and had to make due with Maxwell House.

Other features that are worth noting: a washer and dryer (and a drying line) were so great to have at our disposal, the truck rental is one of the best cars we've ever had on an Out Island, and the caretakers from Pigeon Cay, Leslie and Ned, are wonderful, close by, and can help you with virtually anything you need.

And the hut on the beach–we virtually lived there! It was so nice to have a large, shaded area, just steps from that gorgeous water.

Owner's Response: Meghan & Bruce, As you also mentioned our beach tiki hut, the white sand beach, , and the Boathouse 12 foot covered decks are the three favorite spots guest's mention to relax on our property . The 2 king size hammocks and chaise lounges on the deck are also top choices. Glad you enjoyed the comfy king size bed, the Select Comfort is a very high quality and comfortable mattress system. As you also mentioned, guest's comment time and time again that having Ned & Leslie (our property managers) on-island to answer questions and make recommendations on snorkeling spots, the best kayaking adventures, grocery stores, wine & spirits markets, and best restaurants to check out is a real benefit. And they're great folks too. We shipped our Toyota 4 Runner over from Florida two years ago and it has been a great vehicle for the island; many guests take advantage of it during their week stay. We wanted to thank you for choosing to stay at the Boathouse, and were thrilled to hear you were looking to book again next year. We look forward to your return! Best, Sarah & Mark

We had the most wonderful week at The Boathouse. I don't know if you could find a more relaxing vacation. That is of course if you enjoy cooking your own food, and not doing much of anything. Ned and Leslie, who manage the property and own the nearby Pugeon Cay are absolutely wonderful. We did have a few meals there, which sitting on the beachside was so relaxing.

We were told from the locals that our week had been the worst weather wise so far this winter. It was very breezy and cooler then normal. But we still wouldn't of traded it for anything. We are going home to a Winter Storm Warning now, but I'm hoping the memories from The Boathouse, Pigeon Cay, and the rest of the island can keep us warm until spring.

Our cabbie, Danny was awesome. He is a gardener too, so ask him for produce. His tomatoes were the best. We took the car out 2 days, which was more then enough for us. Next time we will probably bring more food along as it is pricey, and "boat dependent". If the boat doesn't make it, you don't get it. Gas stations were even out of gas due to the high winds from Saturday until Thursday.

We were never at Cat Island, or any besides Nasssau, prior to this trip. But we will be back to the gorgous beaches at Cat Island. Next time though, we will bypass a stop at Nassau, and get right to the relaxation time.

Mark and Sara. Thank you for renting your home out to us, and providing the most memorable vacation we could of ever had.

Owner's Response: Brad & Kathleen, "We had the most wonderful week at the BOATHOUSE" & "the memorable vacation we could of ever had" are music to our ears. Although it sounds like it was a bit windy during part of your stay, we are happy to hear you had such a great time. Although the high wind coming from the leeward side can delay the supply boats arriving from Nassau, it typically means lots of fresh LOBSTER, CONCH, SNAPPER & GROUPER because it is calm on the windward side for the fisherman. Either way a wind from the leeward is rare and typically lasts only a couple of days. Danny the farmer and taxi driver is a great guy. He lives in Wilson Bay (about 6 miles from the Boathouse) and grows vegetables and fruit on a large plot behind his home. Danny is thrilled to give anyone a tour of his gardens and will let you pick your own if you so desire.. Depending on the season, Danny grows tomatoes, green & red peppers, ghost peppers, sweet potatoes, kale, cucumbers, zucchini, limes, bananas, and papaya. His home is on the main road, just up from Derrick's Conch Shack. Also on the same road, about 2 1/2 mies from the house, you will find Tito's Fresh Fish. Tito is a fisherman and also markets fresh seafood for other local fisherman at his store. Depending on seasonality, Tito has fresh caught lobster, conch, grouper, snapper, and ocasionally mahi. Call ahead or just drop by. Thank you for choosing to spend your vacation at the Boathouse; and please return again real soon. Best, Mark & Sarah

Total relaxation in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

I have been reading reviews for the Boathouse for years now and dreamed of going there ever since I first found out about it. This year my dream finally came true! My wife and I spent an idyllic week at the Boathouse in late March/early April. It was just as wonderful as I imagined it would be, the house was clean and so bright inside with all the natural light, the bed was so comfortable, we were each able to adjust the mattress for our own comfort. The kitchen and grill were perfect and we spent our breakfast and lunch each day out on the deck looking at the beautiful view of the creek. After breakfast walking over that dune each day and seeing the water and the empty beach spread out before us was so amazing and peaceful, I put my wife's chair in the sun and I sat under the tiki hut and we spent the days there in total relaxation. We were extremely sad when it was time to go. One week is not enough, we told Ned and Leslie that if they ever wanted to retire that they should call us and we would gladly take over ha ha! They are lovely people, very kind, generous and always ready to help out with anything you need. The 4-Runner was great for excursions, we spent one day driving around the island (From the Hawks Nest for lunch to Shanna's Cove for dinner) but that was enough. We spent the rest of our days relaxing on the beach or hanging out in the hammocks on the deck of the Boathouse. We did go out to dinner a few times, Da Smoke Pot is a must, Fernandez Bay had amazing food and we had dinner one night at Pigeon Cay which was easily as delicious as the others were. We visited the bar at Pigeon Cay most days in the afternoon for a Kalik and sat watching the waves and chatting with their guests but the best part of the whole vacation for me was spending quality time in peaceful seclusion with my wife. I cannot wait to come back for a longer stay. Thank you so much for offering up such an amazing place for us to stay.

Owner's Response: Todd & Tammy, Sounds like a perfect holiday ! For many, it is hard to believe that you can have such a beautiful beach and ocean setting all to yourself, but as you described, the Boathouse on Cat Island is such a place. When we purchased these 3 1/4 acres of beachfront back in the 90's, there were two houses on the 3 miles of beach stretching from our property to Alligator Point. Twenty+ years later the number of homes on this stretch is eight (spread over 3 miles). As you so effectively described, "it is like having a private beach, where you can totally relax". Thank you for staying at the Boathouse, and please come back soon. Best, Mark & Sarah

Another week in Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I returned to the Boathouse for our third stay in the last 17 months in April. It was again perfect for our needs. The Boathouse provides complete tranquility in a breathtakingly beautiful location.

If you want complete relaxation on a world class beach, with very few people to interrupt you, the Boathouse is the perfect place. The private tiki hut is the perfect place to take refuge after long swims in the gin clear water.

You can cook for yourself in the well appointed kitchen, or supplement your meals with Ned and Leslie just down the beach at Pigeon Cay 3-4 times per week for dinner.

Owner's Response: Heath & Janelle, Wow, three stays at the Boathouse within two years is a new record for return guests! Whether reading a book on the beach in the tiki hut, relaxing in the hammocks on the deck, snorkeling or scuba diving, kayaking or exploring the island on the beach cruisers, Cat Island has a lot (or a little, if that's your preference) to do and see. You seem to have mastered the island lifestyle. We added 2 new sets of snorkeling equipment (masks, snorkels, fins) this month for guest's use, and a lot of new books to the lending library at the house. For those that like to cook at home, Tito's (local fisherman) place is a short pedal from the house for fresh caught Red Snapper, Mahi Mahi, Grouper,Conch and Lobster in season. If you want to have someone else cook for you, between Derrick's Conch Shack, Sammy T's, and Da Smoke Pot Restaurant on the North end they cook up fresh fish, conch, lobster, crab, curried chicken and the occasional steak. And a short walk up the beach from the house, the Pigeon Cay Beach Club cooks an evening feast 3-4 times per week for their guests, and guests of the Boathouse. Leslie and Ned are great hosts for the evening, and it's fun to meet up with some of the other island guests at the outdoor bar or the cookout. Boathouse guests also have full signing privileges at the PCBC beach bar during their entire stay, should you want a cold beer or other refreshment after a long walk on the beach or a day out exploring the island. Thank you so much for choosing the Boathouse as your island home- away-from-home. We hope to see you back on-island very soon. Best, Mark & Sarah

Great airy cottage

  • 4 of 5

Fabulous way to live in the tropics....all glass doors open onto a surrounding deck. I felt like I was on a deluxe tented African safari. Outdoor shower is great, bed was ultra comfortable (the mosquito netting over the bed is a nice addition) and kitchen had good appliances. The Weber grill was great and the large deck really is part of your living space. The beach palapa is fabulous and it's a great place for swimming. No snorkeling here.

On the negative side, the sink faucet took a little time to figure out (instructions would help) and it would be nice to have a small toaster oven for broiling since the only oven is the microwave/convection oven. No see-ums and mosquitoes are a real problem when the wind dies or the sun sets. We were forced to close the doors in the evenings and eating on the deck for dinner was problematic. There are no screens and the doors are not particularly tight so bugs do still come in and the doors really rattle in a wind storm (the latches are no longer working on some of the doors). You had better like outdoor living....which we do!

If you like bonefishing, it's out your backdoor. We were on the lagoon/creek every day and it's extensive. We spent a day with a local fisherman and did some hand-line fishing about 200 yards off the shore from our beach.....caught buckets of snapper, grouper and other fish.

Overall, a great spot to stay as long as you like being away from it all.

Owner's Response: Carol, Thank you for the nice write up on the Boathouse and our property. We are elated that you enjoyed our island home and beautiful beach. Cat Island is truly an Out Island gateway with unspoiled beaches, crystal clear water, lovely islanders, and zero large resorts. Glad you enjoyed the Select Comfort Cal-King bed, large shower, outdoor Weber, and beach tiki hut. Sorry about the pests you experienced at dusk a few of your nights. Sometimes when the wind dies or a large storm is moving in, it stirs them up right at sundown. We have ordered a no-see-um screening system for the deck area for just those times, to make outdoor dining and relaxing more enjoyable. The screening system is being custom designed and built in Canada, and should be shipped to the island by the end of next month. The fishing around the house can be quite good, as you discovered. You can walk out behind the Boathouse on the flats in Pigeon Creek and wade all the way to Alligator Point in some pretty nice water. It is particularly good for catching bonefish on a fly-rod. We usually use an 8# rod and Crazy Charlie's are very popular. Off Alligator Point grouper and snapper are common, with lobster and conch plentiful on the windward side of the island. Again, thank you for staying at the Boathouse, and please come back soon. Best, Mark & Sarah
