Romantic European-Style Villa on Boundary of Joshua Tree Park

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Joshua Tree - Villa dei Fiori

House, 3 Bedrooms + Library, 1 Bath, + sofa sleeper(Sleeps 8)

Villa dei Fiori is a romantic escape on 14 acres on the boundary of the Joshua Tree National Park. Pine log pergolas cover the surrounding five terraces with arbors of climbing roses and cascading purple and white wisteria.

The villa, built amid the surrounding quartz monzonite boulders, was created by Dale Allan Pelton, a Hollywood based film production designer and architect. On the west side of the villa, the terraces of 150 rose bushes with a border of purple French lavender form a dramatic contrast to the savage landscape of boulders beyond.

There is a grove of Italian Stone pines on the north. To the south, a terrace of raked sand with a Zen aesthetic, is in the midst of large boulders, perfect for al fresco dining. In the west one can see the snow-capped peak of San Gorgonio. Between the kitchen terrace and the southeast terrace stands a giant Joshua tree, several hundred years of age. The motor court is surrounded by mesquite trees and crimson oleanders, allowing a feeling of complete solitude and pastoral peace.

Near the house, is a cave formed of giant boulders with a bed of soft sand and a fire pit where guests have dinner parties in the evening by the light of an open fire. Crevices in the boulders open to the sky so that one can glimpse the stars at night.

Features - The villa has an European ambiance, with three bedrooms, one painted raspberry and another, magenta, and the living and dining rooms treated with hand-rubbed colors of cognac and amber over an under layer of gold. The master bedroom has a romantic antique bed, its ornate design formed with the tendrils of metal leaves. The colors of the Moroccan pottery complement the vivid paintings of the Parisian artist, Viviane Quence.

Although the house is modest in size, 1400 sq. foot, there are 1600 sq. foot of terraces with pergolas of cascading wisteria and climbing roses. Each room has its own private terrace, accessed by double doors, 13 glass French doors in total, bring the outdoors inside.

There is a magnificent library spread throughout several rooms - hundreds of books on subjects as varied as architecture, painting, sculpture, film, biography, literature, photography, fashion, gardening, travel, exotic places, anthropology, history, almost any subject one could think of.

The living room features a silk tapestry and original paintings and a rock sculpture from the film, 'Battlestar Galactica.' There is an excellent stereo system with an Ipod dock, and selection of CDs. There is no cable TV so that one can enjoy the quiet natural sounds of the desert. However, there is a DVD and VCR receiver, film videos available and a high speed wireless internet connection.

Although the kitchen is modest in size, it has top quality cookware, porcelain service for 12, wine glasses, baking ware, all imaginable cooking utensils, blender, coffee bean grinder, oversize toaster, programmable coffee maker, a micro wave, a new stainless steel 22 cubic foot refrigerator. There is a library of cookbooks in the living room bookcase. The stove’s oven has baked many turkeys, but will soon be replaced with one with higher BTU burners. Counter space being limited, a large kitchen table (which expands to 7 feet) may be pulled out to form a work space allowing 2 or 3 persons to work simultaneously. The gas barbecue is on the kitchen terrace just 12 feet from the kitchen. The dining terrace overlooks a Joshua tree amid the boulders. Near the kitchen, there is an tone fireplace for wood fires on the terrace by the boulders.

Since the number of guests vary, numerous tables are set against the wall, so that guests can make their own decision about the size and placement of their dining arrangements. There are 8 wooden chairs inside, and 6 plastic ones outside, with an 8 foot table on the living/dining room terrace which seats 10. On the north terrace, there are two chaise longue chairs. The cushions for the chaise are stored in baskets under the marble table inside.

The large swimming pool has a salt electrolyte purification system and a beautiful gemstone pebble surface. The best swimming months are April to mid October. The two pool terraces have a table with six lounge chairs. When not in use, the pool chairs should not be left close to the water, because a sudden wind storm will blow them into the pool creating a contamination problem. There is a large market umbrella stored in the middle bedroom closet. It is kept inside when not in use, because of the sudden wind storms which spring up unexpectedly which can instantly destroy an umbrella.

Activities: 500 feet, behind the villa, you will discover the hidden valley on the estate. From there you may hike directly into the multi-hued canyons of Joshua Tree National Park. Hiking through the boulders you will spy cactus wrens and ravens, owls and hawks, rabbits, roadrunners and quail. If you are fortunate, you may spy at a distance, a bobcat who lives in my hidden valley, or an increasingly rare Chuckawalla iguana, or Mojave Desert tortoise. This is such an inaccessible region of the park you will not encounter any other hikers to disturb your splendid solitude.

Excellent restaurants are to be found in Twentynine Palms: Bistro Twentynine, Wonder Garden Cafe, 29 Palms Inn.) Joshua Tree: Crossroads Café and the Thai or Indian restaurant.

About The Owner

I attended Cherokee school in Oklahoma with Indians and poor whites. War games and fist fights were the events at lunch time. After feeding the chickens, pulling weeds, fighting prairie fires, I read books in the magical forest across the creek.

After wrestling for Oklahoma State and University of Nebraska, I studied philosophy at University of Tulsa, writing newspaper reviews of cinema, literature, essays on ethics and politics. During my college years, I hitchhiked across America, Key West, Florida, New Orleans, San Francisco, through slums of Mexico City, Guatemalan jungles and San Salvadorian barrios, journeys which have inspired the characters in Celine on Fire.

Working as a white journalist for Tulsa’s black newspaper, I returned from King’s march from Selma to Montgomery to deliver an address, Thunder in the Ghetto, in the rebuilt Church which had been burned to the ground in the 1921 Race Riot. I organized concerts for jazz musicians, Baby Face Willette and Odetta, opened The Bastille, a folk music, rock/dance club.

During two years at the UCLA graduate film school, I directed my thesis, Death of the Red Planet, in 35mm Cinemascope, quadraphonic sound, the first film created by lasers. http://cec.concordia.ca/econtact/11_4/pelton_red_planet.html. filmed in the laboratories of Cal-Tech and sound track created at Cal-Arts. Praised by American Cinematographer, and Hollywood Reporter, the film was invited to the Cannes Festival and played in 600 theaters across America. My first film work was for Battlestar Galactica. While working with Steven Spielberg (The Goonies), Terry Gilliam (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), Paul Verhoeven (Hollowman), designing music videos for Olivia Newton, Travolta, Cindy Lauper, I wrote screenplays at night, East of the Moon, and a musical Celine on Fire. From my original screenplay evoking the spirit of Gene Kelly’s An American in Paris, the story evolved into a historical-philosophical novel set in 1950s Paris.

The Owner purchased this house in 1988

Why The Owner chose Joshua Tree

I discovered Joshua Tree in 1968 when visiting my family, original settlers who homesteaded the land in the early 1950s.

I began landscaping the garden 25 years ago. The Italian Stone pines are 22 years old, the rose garden 15 years ago. The terraces and surrounding berms of decomposed granite have been sculpted over the years. Big horn sheep sometimes come off the park into our valley of the moon where bobcats, kit foxes and roadrunners roam.

Ahh! Joshua Tree!

  • 5 of 5

I recently joined a group of friends (8 women) for a week-end getaway and we rented this delightful house. The property really suits the location, up on a hill, abutting these glorious rock formations, and ceiling to floor glass doors that allow the sunlight in while providing marvelous views of the valley. Joshua Tree National Park at this time of year is glorious with the cactus and wildflower blooming. The entire stay had the laid back vibe that I had been seeking. The owner provided everything we needed in terms of amenities. We had a great time, lots of delicious food, good wine, and laughter. I only wish that I could have stayed longer.

8 ladies

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 8 ladies. We loved it. It was a very harmonious weekend. A very good retreat. The home is lovely. We did not have any problems with the one bathroom and remember there were 8 of us. The owner was kind and we could tell that he loved the property. It was not just a "rental" to him. We toured the Joshua tree National Park and the boulders at the home were better. Such unique and beautiful surroundings. We all really enjoyed ourselves. I have no idea what the negative report was about or what they were expecting. It is hard to please all of the people all of the time I guess.

artistic desert oasis

  • 5 of 5

This is a unique and beautiful home set in a stunning desert landscape. It is very comfortably furnished, and is decorated with original works of art throughout. The library is very extensive. The outdoor pool area and numerous patios provide breathtaking views of the surrounding desert: Joshua Tree's famed boulders and the desert valley below. It is the perfect place to relax, unwind, and read, or for boulder climbing and hiking. It is a short drive to the heart of Joshua Tree National Park. The whole family had a great time!

Not a Villa. Think Glamping.

  • 4 of 5

With so many glowing reviews, I was a bit slack jaw upon arriving at how very un-Villa or 'stunning' this house actually is - It is a well placed shack on a pretty lot. My 3 stars here are based on my expectations created by the owner's description and other reviews. Nothing architectural or luxe about the house- except the awesome book collection. How anyone would think so is a mystery. BUT this is funky Joshua Tree and the grounds are absolutely special!

This track house sits on an amazing lot right up against the Butt Crack boulders that Joshua Tree is famous for. You will be met by Dale, the guy in the photos and a very caring man if not a 'little' OCD. He will take you on a 45 minute tour of the house. He will ask which of your party will be the 'light monitor' and he's serious. He will ask who will be doing the dishes because 'it's best to have the same person put them away if they are the one that took them out' - but don't worry if you forget because every cabinet has a photograph as to where each well worn pot, fork, glass, dish go. Like a surgery tray and you are to keep it that way.

A grumpy neighbor requires that you do not make noise on the west side of the house. Which is where the pool and caves are. He fretted over my 6 year old laughing while exploring the cave area. At 4pm.. The pool is gorgeous but nights too cold and water too deep to heat. 56 degrees

Inside, furniture is pushed in a row against the walls like a house party (or funeral). Oddly, there are only 2 lounge chairs located in the front yard a few feet from the quiet street. But no loungers near the pool nor the rear yard. No hammock. Nothing for napping, although we grabbed a pad and laid on the awesome boulders like sunning lizards. Awesome.

The only bathroom is tiny and gloomy 'be careful what you flush or you will be charged..'. The sheets are older and soaked in fabric softener, there are no extra sets of sheets or blankets. No throws. Pillows are dead. If you like nice bedding, bring them. The scratchy, polyester coverlets smell like your old Aunt Martha in Florida. Dale needs to hit Home Goods big time.

There are french doors but only 1 window that opens, so at night when the critters come out or during the frequent winds, you are to 'be sure to close all the doors'. No fresh nighttime air to lull you. The house is in a bowl geographically so no view of the sunset, but you can climb to see it.

Set your expectations and enjoy

Owner's Response: On Easter, the author of this review wrote in our guest book, “Thank you for your care and love. Your home is a magical place. Some wounds were healed here.” Why someone would one day say it is a magical place, then the day after, makeup false statements is irrational. In the 25 years in which I have opened my home to vacationers, once a year I receive a guest who is emotionally troubled. All I can do is to have compassion for them. I suggest that travelers read all of our reviews which have an accurate view of Villa dei Fiori.

Great place for a family vacation

  • 5 of 5

Other reviewers have covered the many wonderful attributes of this property but they bear repeating: location, amenities, solitude and luxury. We spent our spring break here with our two teenage kids and the Villa had everything we needed and more! Want to lounge by the pool? Done! Want to explore the dessert wilderness? Done! Want to relax and enjoy the dessert night sky from a hot tub? Done! The location of the home near the road is deceptive - the landscaping and layout of the property couldn't be more private. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed to prepare our own gourmet meals at home. The Villa met the needs of everyone in our family including those wanting to relax and read a good book and those wanting to be active from dawn 'til dusk. The fresh cut flowers from the rose garden that greeted us in every bedroom at check in were a very nice touch. Our host clearly takes pride in his home and we are thankful that he chooses to share it. A perfect place to make memories to last a lifetime!

Stunning Home

  • 5 of 5

Location, setting and amenities are outstanding. An amazing place to stay that's utterly one of a kind. Dale has a flair for design so the house is immaculate and although the kitchen is small it is fully equipped for just about anything (even a Paella pan!). It's also built to entertain with numerous chairs/sofas and comfortably appointed decks off every room. But what makes this property unique is it's location. The national park is your backyard and in this case it is right up against the most gorgeous boulders that are perfect for exploring, climbing, and finding a perch to enjoy the surrounding desert. There's a hot tub, a pool, a dining patio nestled in the rocks, numerous fore pits, an amazing walk around the grounds and through the boulder valley, and a true three chamber cave - all in the private backyard. Go - but hopefully not on the dates I want as I will be back.
