NORTH SHORE ORGANIC FARM HOUSE ACROSS FROM BEACH!

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday home in Kilauea

House, 1 Bedroom + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3)

Come Stay on a Beautiful Organic Farm located on the lovely North Shore of Kauai.

The ORCHARD HOUSE sits atop a hill, at the entrance of our 13- acre organic farm. The rental features breathtaking views of several of Kauai's lushest jungle mountain ranges, as well as our tropical fruit orchard below. And just a few minute walk across the street, down a rural beach access road, will provide you with gorgeous, sweeping views of the north shore coastline. Once there, you can access the beach via a trail that leads you down to the beach below. The trail is steep with switch backs. We provide adjustable hiking sticks for our adventurous guests. Upon your decent, you'll be standing on one of Kauai's most pristine and secluded beaches. Continue walking north along the sandy shoreline to the the end of beach, there near a lava rock outcropping, you will find a sandy bottom dipping/swimming area. It's protected from big waves by an outer reef. Perfect for cooling off. On your hike down, expect to see cool shells scattered in the tide line and spouting humpback whales, during whale season. There's plenty of native seabirds to see too, especially early in the morning. And from the beach, you may even be treated with an occasional sighting of our native endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals & Green Sea Turtles, that often come ashore to nap in the warm Hawaiian sun! This beach and it's quite setting, is the perfect get away from it all- for the minimalists day hiker.

However, if the rugged secluded beach setting is not for you, the orchard house is conveniently located between two great uncrowded north shore beaches that you can park & walk up to- all within a 5 mile radius. Plus, the beautiful Hanalei Bay is but a 15 minute drive north.

The Orchard House is a sweet one bedroom, one bathroom home, with a large additional screened sleeping lanai. It also has a fully equipped kitchen, bamboo floors & furnishings, cable TV, free Wifi, outdoor shower, W/D & all the modern conveniences of home.

Guests will be treated to a box of fresh, locally-grown organic produce upon arrival.

Aloha, I have lived and worked as an organic farmer on Kauai for the past 15 years. I love what I do and would like to share my beautiful farm with unique travelers who would prefer the farm side setting to a hotel experience.

Sheri Saari, Property Manager purchased this house in 1996

I fell in love with the lush North Shore of Kauai on a vacation 18 years ago. It was love at first site. And as fate would have it -I was blessed with the most perfect piece of paradise this island had to offer!

Some of the benefits of the farm setting include quiet solitude, lovely walks on secluded pristine beach located right across the street from the farm. And soaking up abundant garden island beauty that surrounds you.

UPS AND DOWNS BUT MOSTLY NICE...

  • 4 out of 5
I should preface this by saying that the place we normally stay at wasn't available; this was a backup choice. We'd never stayed here before.

As far as North Shore locations go, doesn't get better than this. Easy access to Rock Quarry, Moloaa, Secret Beach (not so Secret any more), and of course Waiakalua, which is right there. Also a short drive to Anini Beach, if you're down with the whole cruise ship tourist vibe.

If you've not been to Waiakalua beach (the one closest to the house), be forewarned: it and Secret Beach are difficult to get to, especially for people that are getting on in years. Most rentals around those two beaches say "short hike" without mentioning that the short hike is nearly vertical. More like a short climb. It is also very dangerous to swim at unless you have a thorough knowledge of the ocean and its ways. Long story short: don't plan on spending much time at the beach by the house. It's no fun. I'd recommend Moloaa or Rock Quarry if you like privacy, or Anini if you have small children. You're not going to learn how to boogie board at Waiakalua. You will, in fact, die, most likely. So don't do that. It'll really put a damper on your vacation. Also, a lot of homeless people sleep in their cars or in the rough at that beach. While they're friendly, in my experience, forewarned is forearmed, and it might weird out your morning walk.

As far as the house goes, it's small. There's a day bed that could probably sleep an adult, and a couch that could as well. The single bedroom has a queen size in it. The house gets very warm in the summer, especially if there's no breeze, as there is no shade on the south or west sides of the building. The road gets quite a bit of traffic. It's not exactly what I would call "private," especially compared to other places we've stayed on the North Shore. The house is mostly exposed to the road, although they're growing a big bamboo hedge that should solve that problem shortly.

Note there is no oven in the otherwise well-stocked kitchen. If you plan on cooking your own meals, be prepared for this. Also, unlike most vacation rentals in Kauai, there is no watersports equipment provided, so you need to rent snorkels, fins, masks, etc. (Cheap, anyhow.)

I still give it 4 stars for the location and the service. It's a nice, clean house for a fair price. They were super helpful at solving a couple minor things really quick. Fresh fruit was fresh as can be.

OLANA FARMS-LOVELY LOCATION

  • 4 out of 5
We stayed at Olana Farms for one week February 2014. My husband and I were on a vacation to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. Kauai was the second destination on our Hawaiian vacation. We stayed a week at Olana Farms and it did not disappoint. The photos were not misleading, it is a spacious Suite with great accommodations. The small touches such as fresh flowers made you feel like you were staying at an upscale resort but without the crowd. The farm is nestled among the hills and trees just a short trip from the main highway. We found the location to be convenient to all our day trips. During our trip in February we did experience rain for a few days but it did not let it ruin our fun. After hiking on those rainy days we utilized the outdoor shower to wash the red dirt from our legs and feet before going up to our beautiful suite. One slight negative would be the availability of hot water. Due to the overcast days and solar water heater we did not have hot water. After a quick text to Tim the backup heater was turned on but they obviously do not keep their water heater turned up as high as we are do at home in cold Illinois. It was an adjustment but definitely just a minor concern. I would recommend this lovely location for your stay in Kauai.

JUST WHAT WE WANTED!

  • 5 out of 5
Spent 8 great days in the Orchard Farm House and loved every minute of it. We wanted rural - we got rural. We wanted quiet - we got quiet (okay there were a few distant roosters). We wanted a base to explore the island - we had it every day. We had a comfortable space with a well supplied kitchen. a beautiful view to enjoy that morning coffee on the lanai. Sheri was a great help with any questions we had, the farmgate fruit stand was conveniently located and the smell of plumeria (?) outside the bedroom window as the sun rose. Did I mention the magnificent sunset on out final evening? That we return is a given, the only question is how soon.

PERFECT SPOT IN PARADISE

  • 5 out of 5
We loved our stay on the farm in Kilauea. The house is very spacious and nicely appointed. We found the area to be quiet and enjoyed the hike down to the beach. And of course loved the basket of papaya, oranges and the biggest avocados I've ever seen. We plan on staying here again next year!

ORCHARD HOUSE IS 5 STAR PERFECT

  • 5 out of 5
This is a great place to stay if you are looking for great location. It is a quiet Orchard house, but this isn't your typical farm house. It is very nice inside and out, and very well appointed. The owner Aimee took excellent care of any/all requests. The beach down the 0.25 mile road is very pristine and rated #1 in the blue book.

NICE ACCOMMODATIONS

  • 3 out of 5
The Orchard House provided an overall nice respite in the beautiful community of Kilauea. The house is spacious and the lanai is spectacular for sunsets, bird watching and all around lounging. The kitchen is well stocked with just about anything you might require to prepare island style meals. While the inside of the house is very well maintained, a few factors combined to make our stay at this property mediocre when compared to other similar vacation rentals. The house is surrounded on all sides by wasp nests. If your allergic, think twice before visiting this location. The laundry facilities while most convenient are often in use by other folks on the property. During our four night stay 3 different people came by to do their laundry, one person went as far as to remove our load to do their own. The bed wasn't particularly comfortable, and there was quite a bit of in and out traffic into the evening, particularly on the weekend. Lastly, I made a booking mistake and the manager was less than friendly in resolving the issue, lacking the aloha island friendliness that we'd come to sincerely admire. All that to say, we were grateful for the roof over our heads but won't return.

Owner's Response: Aloha Megan,

I just read your reveiw. I am sorry to read you were less than happy with your stay at our farm. And that you felt you were not treated with Aloha. We try really hard to make our guest feel welcome without being intrusive. That's why we do things like, provide a fresh basket of complimentary fresh island fruit for your enjoyment.

First, I want to applogize for the wasp again. I thought we'd resolved this issue by sending our caretaker over to knock down the nests. The wasp are very problematic this time of the year and need to be constantly monitored. So thank you for letting us know that it's still issue so that we can promptly deal with it.

Secondly, the laundry, folie !!! I was really bummed to read that you were disturbed by the other tenet doing their laundry. And how they mishandled yours, is not okay. Based on your discription, I've since asked that they make other arrangements for laundry. They're new to the farm & the shared laundry was on a trial bases in return that they always respect our guest's space first. So sorry for that, and thanks again- your input is invaluable.

Third, the bed, it's less than a year old. And when I purchased it new, I laid on it first and thought it was quite comfortable. I even remember choosing it for that very reason. But comfort is subjective and I'm sorry it did not meet up with your expectations.

Fourth, the traffic- apparently during your stay, there was a large outdoor wedding reception taking place not to far from the farm. And the traffic noise you experienced, was the wedding party setting up & the guests arriving and leaving. The farm is generally very quite with only the sounds of the distant waves lulling you to sleep. Aloha, Aimee
