Stay in the most beautiful (and most photographed) spot in the charming, warm, medieval town of Semur-en-Auxois! An artist's paradise!
This lovely recently restored house with a large riverside garden, patio, orchard and vineyard awaits you. On the banks of the gently flowing River Armançon with views of the cathedral, castle towers, and ancient bridge, the house is just a stroll away from the town center.
The location offers convenience, privacy, and off-street parking.
Walk up the gently winding stairs around an ancient Burgundy tower for your morning baguette or croissant, or watch the town wake up from your table in a friendly café as you sip your first espresso.
This enchanting little town of 5,000 is both vibrant and relaxing, an undiscovered treasure. Host a garden party or just relax in our large patio with stunning panoramic views, sample grapes from our organic vineyard, or pick apples, cherries, pears, plums, strawberries, and flowers to your heart's delight.
Offering tranquil relaxation an hour from Paris by TGV train and minutes from the cobblestone walkways of the town center, the location is ideal for your next romantic or family getaway.
You can explore the lively Burgundy region on day trips by bicycle or car, go wine tasting, hop on a fast train to Paris or Euro Disney for the kids. There is a fresh water lake 3 km away for swimming and boating. There is bike rental shop in Dijon that will deliver rental bikes to the house and a rental car can be delivered to the Montbard train station for your pick up and return.
Your home away from home is elegantly decorated to create a warm, comfortable stay. Perfect for small families or two couples traveling together. The house comfortably sleeps 4 - 5, with two large bedrooms plus a sleeping loft. There are new appliances, washer and dryer, and modern comforts throughout, including towel warmer in the bathroom.
We fell in love with Semur-en-Axois and travel there several times a year.
We enjoy biking, hiking, gardening, wine tasting, wine making, fine dining, learning the French language, and experiencing the French lifestyle.
We started Share Maison in order to share this magical place with others through fractional ownership.
We have found that by returning to the same beautiful location during different seasons builds more vivid memories from which we are nurtured during our busy city lives the rest of the year.
We are proud to have restored and preserved this historic property.
Ken and Sarah purchased this cottage in 2007
We have traveled the world, and when we stumbled upon this hidden treasure, this charming, lively little town, we had to be part of it. It is incredibly peaceful there. We are wine enthusiasts and have been making attempts of coaxing some drinkable wine from our small vineyard. We love harvesting and enjoying the seasonal fruit from the orchard, as we know you will, too.
The town is about an hour east of Paris by nonstop TGV, easy to get to and smack dab in the middle of the Burgundy wine and cheese making region.
The house is located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac that offers both peaceful tranquility and easy access to the town center.
The entire town is an historic monument status and yet still retains a vibrant local culture with modern amenities and restaurants open all year.
Once you visit this enchanting, tranquil, and friendly town, you will understand how we feel.
This house has both the feel of a French country farmhouse and pied-a-terre in town. Children's laughter echoes down from the primary school up on the ramparts above, punctuated by sounds the busy ducks on the lazy river below.
The views from our property are some of the most photographed scenes in all of Burgundy. The visual beauty is stunning and inexhaustible!
A few steps along the river brings you to our cloistered vineyard, fruit orchard and garden, where you can enjoy quiet meals from our patio with stunning tower views.
During the summer months, there are weekly festivals in town as well as wine events at local wineries in the fall. The town has an historic Italianate Theatre, which hosts musical concerts and other events throughout the year.
The town is well situated for wine and cheese tasting day trips, and there is huge freshwater lake nearby for swimming and boating.
You may want to hang out in the local cafe in town and soak up the ambiance of the local culture, take in a current run film at the local movie art house, or rent bikes to explore ancient ruins and ride along the famous canals of Burgundy at Motbard. During the summer months, there is even a bike rental shop that will deliver your bike to our doorstep!
The Abby of Fontenay, also classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site like the entire town of Semur, is just a 30 minute car ride though the lush, rolling farmlands surrounding the area.
Whatever your unique taste, this town has much to offer.
We've stayed here twice in the past couple of years, and look forward to returning. Sarah and Ken have created a comfortable home away from home for people who want to enjoy Semur and the wider experience of Bourgogne.
Semur is an amazing example of a well preserved medieval city. It's small enough that you can cover it on foot easily, but big enough to have a selection of restaurants, cafes, bakeries, wine shops and even a supermarket. There is a lot to explore.
From this location, it's an easy drive or bus/train to Dijon, Beaune and Paris. There are lots of interesting small towns in the region just a few minutes away by car. The house contains a collection of travel information in several languages. WiFi makes it easy to do internet research as necessary.
The house is equipped with everything you need for a short or long stay. It's well located for easy access to town. Having access to the private garden and courtyard is an extra plus in the summer for those who like to dine outside. I recommend it heartily.
The cottage has a very home-like atmosphere and is full of antiques and personal touches. everything you could need was provided. We loved the view from the dining table and the front bedroom, and also the bbq in the orchard around the corner. There are lovely river walks from the front door for a relaxing evening. The area has a lot to offer: chateaux, villages, vineyards - we easily occupied a week. We would return again. Ken and Sarah are very easy and friendly owners.
This was a trip with my daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter and wife to renew our French experiences before another grandchild was added. We spent 3 days in Paris which was wonderful but wanted to experience the slower pace of a small village.
We were in the house in Semur about 3 minutes and my son-in-law questioned why we had spent any time in Paris. The rental was so inviting and engaging we had to pinch ourselves that we were not in a dream. This was all we could have hoped for and more. Every comfort and amenity was met. The house was clean, the beds comfortable, the village within a 5 minute walk. The owners were very accommodating of our 2 1/2 yr. old granddaughter with her sleeping arrangements. We truly felt we had stumbled on jewel. It felt like "home".
All of this is in addition to the friendliness of the neighbors and the acceptance of the villagers. Our time was truly a "moment of happiness".
We stayed at the cottage the last 5 nights of a month-long French holiday. The place was perfect for us, quiet, relaxing, beautifully furnished and in a magical setting along the river beneath the village towers. The owners also have quite the library of travel information as well as classics. It was great to just sit with the shutters open listening to a storm rumble through reading a book in the heart of Burgund while enjoying the nice gift basket left for us at our arrival. Life does not get much better than that,
The cottage was a little hard to find at first but only because I did not pay careful enough attention to the directions. Once we were situated it provided remarkable easy access to the village (albeit up 142 steps - good excersize) as well as the surrounding French countryside.
Arrangements were handled by professionally dispite the many changes in schedule that we initiated due to our changing travel plans
Would love to stay here again if our travels take us to this lovely area or Burgundy in the future.
We have visited Semur-en-Auxois a number of times on day trips over the past 12 years. In 2012 we wanted to find a cottage so we could stay for a week. We chose this property for its close location to Pont Pinard and the amazing views of the town in this area. We are a family 3 adults and 1 young child and were very satisified - from the location to comfort and the range of facilities available. The charming adjacent orchard and vineyard were a bonus and a great place to enjoy leisurely time outdoors in a private setting. Just a short walk over Pont Pinard to the steps leading to the upper town. We would happily stay here again. Semur-en-Auxois is still one of our favourite towns in France.
This is very nice accommodation and it exceeded our expectations. We had a fabulous week exploring, cooking, eating out and relaxing by the river bank next to the accommodation with the ducks each sundown, sharing our bread and cheese. There is nothing the accommodation lacked and all things it supported, were well supported. Local information, radio and TV, well utensiled kitchen, bath, laundry, garage - everything was fabulous. The neighbours are nice. Locally there are many restaurants to choose from and the small walk to and from the restaurants is just adequate to walk off dinner each night. You need a car in Burgundy as there is so much to do. There are just so many activities to balance out a relaxing visit. Cycle the canals, markets at nearby towns most days historical visits like Vezelay, the lovely Dijon old town and markets and then there's even a winery or two.
Weekly summer festivals in town, local World Heritage historical sites, Chateaus, flea markets each weekend in nearby towns, easy walk to grocery stores, outdoor cafes and restaurants, year-round weekly farmer's market, wine tasting events nearby, one hour drive from 28,000 year old cave paintings.
