|Minimum Stay||7 nights|
Three bedrooms comfortably sleep six people in one double room and two spacious twin rooms, all with wonderful views, especially from the living room terrace which boasts a perfect view of the Canigou mountain. We have an iPod docking station and wifi internet available at no extra cost, and each room is equipped with everything you'd need for a relaxing holiday.
The garden is set in the walls of the old barn with a raised decking area, garden and shady patio. The plunge pool is 3.5m x 3.5m and the patio is equipped with dining table, chairs and sun-loungers. The pool is available from May - September and is heated naturally by the sun.
There is ample free parking in the village within sight of the house. Guests are welcome to use our bicycle, and we can also arrange to have rented bikes delivered to the house for your stay.
40 minutes’ drive to the Mediterranean beaches, 40 minutes from the Pyrenean ski resorts (by car, train or bus) and just a 10-minute stroll into Prades itself, Les Volets Vermeils is a perfect base to cater for all your holiday plans in this unspoilt region of France.
Please note that the rental is charged by the week (not the night) and changeover day is Saturday.
The house, garden and pool area are entirely at your disposal during your stay, although you may sometimes share the balcony with swallows and the deck with tiny lizards :-)
Our housekeeping team will prepare the house and pool for you and deal with any on-site emergencies. They are also available to take you on excursions or deliver bikes for hire - please ask us for details.
Codalet is a typical sleepy French village but with all the amenities of Prades just a 10 minute walk away. There you'll find shops, supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, the railway station, tourist information and a municipal swimming pool.
From the top balcony in our house you get to watch all the goings-on directly below you in the square. There is a daily bread van to buy your morning croissants from and a weekly deli van to save a shopping trip.
For information on the historic importance of the house, see our website (gite prades) for the story of the Jewish family who were hidden in our house during 1941.
Public transport in this area is very good and very cheap. All trains and buses cost just EUR1 (yes, one!) per journey which makes for a very economical way of seeing the region. Car hire is available nearby for longer trips and the TGV from Perpignan takes just 40 minutes to Barcelona.
The house is arranged over four floors which is great for working off the local saucisson and vin rouge, but may not be great for those with limited mobility or very young children. The views are worth it from the sitting room at the top, though, we promise!
The Robinson siblings bought Les Volets Vermeils as a shell and have spent much time and love renovating it. We have managed to retain many of the original features while bringing it up to date for modern needs (the superb power shower, for example).
Olivia Robinson purchased this house in 2008
The view of the sacred Canigou mountain dominates the area but this house not only gets to look at it all day long but also gives onto the square, the centre of village life. Knowing that the previous owner of the house had hidden a Jewish family during World War Two just makes this home more important and magical to spend time in.
Les Volets Vermeils looks directly onto the village square with a breathtaking view of the Canigou mountain beyond. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting on the balcony watching life go by after a day sunbathing by the pool or shopping in Prades market. A visitor's book full of activities and recommendations awaits you along with maps, books and ideas for excursions.
e spent a most enjoyable Winter holiday in this delightfully renovated old town house which combines both contemporary and modern with rustic charm. The owners have clearly put a lot of love and hard work into ensuring a comfortable and welcoming stay for their guests, whilst retaining much of the character and essence of this historic building. Split across four floors, I loved the tasteful decor and furnishings and didn't mind the fact that you needed to go downstairs to the toilet or up to the top of the building to reach the lounge. The views from here over the picturesque village square to Mt Canigou in the distance were stunning, especially when near dusk, the light turns to that warm rosy glow. We would definitely return to spend time in the Summer, to relax and unwind, and to climb Mt Canigou.
This house is comfortable anc cosy, it has everything well organised and thoughtful , full of natural light and with beautiful views from the little balcony in the top floor (my favourite spot). It is easy to access by car and train and easy to go for a long or short walk to the nearer villages. I will definetely go back and totally recommend it .
The charming village of Codalet is perfectly placed at the edge of the market town of Prades with the Canigou and surrounding countryside on its doorstep. Cycling trails start here up into the foothills of the mountains and ramblers will love the many signposted walks which criss-cross the region. A bread van delivers 6 days a week and a deli-van visits every Thursday. It's a quiet village with the huge benefit of (now) being a suburb of Prades, a short 10 minute walk away (1km).
Prades itself is a pretty, bustling town with plenty to occupy visitors. There is a great range of local shops, cafes and restaurants. The square hosts a farmer's market twice a week featuring local food and crafts, and festivals are celebrated here like they are in Spain: often!
Just one kilometre out of the village of Codalet you'll find the beautiful Abbaye de Saint Michel-de-Cuxa which hosts numerous musical recitals during the summer months as part of the Pablo Casals Festival. Every July the village of Codalet holds a festival which lasts 3 days, featuring music, food and plenty of Sardane dancing. It's hard to miss this as our house boasts the best view of the square!
There is something for everyone in this area of France. The climate is the warmest in the country, with over 300 days of sunshine a year, mild winters and glorious summers. Water from the mountains irrigates the valley, so despite the low rainfall it never looks parched and dry.
The area is peppered with Cathar castles, vineyards, historic towns and spas. Whether you're looking for sports activities, relaxation, pampering or history, the area around Codalet is full of ideas to inspire your holiday. The region is well served by public transport, where every bus and train journey costs just 1EUR. Take the 'Petit Train Jaune' up into the mountains for an unforgettable journey and bathe in the hot springs at St Thomas les Bains, or head for the coast and the long white beaches of the Mediterranean.
The historic city of Perpignan is just half an hour away; spend a day at the beach in Spain; visit Barcelona or Girona for an afternoon or hire a car and discover the art towns of Ceret and Figeras, the charming fishing town of Collioure or the Cathar castles of Queribus or Fontpeydrouse.
