About Kiel Shaw or Stuart Atkinson

We live in Ramsgate and work in Margate, where we have a large showroom specialising in French Decorative Antiques. We spent ten years living and working in France, developing our knowledge of antiques as well as running a small hotel!.

Kiel Shaw or Stuart Atkinson purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Kiel Shaw or Stuart Atkinson chose Ramsgate

The property caught our eye one day with a large hand-written 'For Sale' poster in the window placed by it's old and very reluctant vendor. This vast Georgian townhouse overlooking the fantastic Ramsgate coastline seemed like the perfect home - our only challenge was to convince the owner to sell it to us, neighbours tell us that many had tried!

We both love Georgian architecture - this admiration began during our time in London with some of the East End houses there, especially the Huguenot houses of Spitalfields.

What makes this apartment unique

The Grade II listed house is part of a terraced Georgian garden square with it's listed Victorian 'rocks' and waterfall. Due to it's elevated position, the views are quite incredible and you'll even get a level eye view of the sea from the apartment. Access to the town, it's shops, bars and restaurants and of course the seafront and harbour is fantastic.

We really relaxed at the apartment every morning with fresh filtered coffee. thank you very much for making it so special, we appreciated it and will defo come back.
thank you to the owners which were so helpful and not intrusive.

Stunning, comfortable apartment

  • 5 out of 5
The decor was immaculate - very tastefully decorated with calming neutral colours all in eggshell paint. Furniture was a beautiful mixture of antique and distressed. The apartment had everything we could've wished for right down to dishwasher tablets and liquid detergent for the washing machine. The bathroom was quirky with an excellent shower. The bedroom was an oasis of calm: the softest bed we've ever slept on with a duvet that was easy to get lost in. We looked forward to going to bed - slept the best we've slept in a long time (11 hours most nights!) - and we didn't want to get up in the morning! All in all, this was the perfect base to explore Ramsgate and its surroundings. Lots of restaurants to try out; good shopping area; friendly people. Better than a home from home! I recommend it to anyone needing to get away from it all for a complete rest.

Lovely property.

  • 5 out of 5
This is a lovely property. It's a self contained basement flat of a beautiful Georgian four storey house. It has been sympathetically restored to a very high standard with a lovely stone floor and well matched decor throughout.
The kitchen was well equipped with a good oven, toaster, microwave and what appeared to be a new coffee making machine, (we didn't use this though).
The bathroom was also well equipped with a fully functioning bath and shower. It was very quirky with its vaulted ceiling and interesting shape.
The living room was also well laid out with a good size table to dine at. The furniture suited the period of the property and was for us an enjoyable part of the holiday.
The bedroom had a lovely big bed which was really comfortable, and the sheets etc were of a good standard.
The outside area was small but did have a small table and 2 chairs. It was opposite a lovely park although as it is a basement flat then it is not possible to see over the wall to the park. This did not stop us from enjoying a glass of wine and soaking up the sun!
The owners lived above and were both friendly and helpful without being intrusive. They had left things like water and milk in the fridge for our arrival, soaps etc in the bathroom, some basic condiments in the cupboards and some useful cleaning products under the sink.
The flat is within 2 minutes walk of the harbour and the sea front, but isn't noisey. If you like walking it is a good place to be. We walked to Pegwell Bay, Broadstairs and Margate on a couple of occasions. the views were beautiful.
So, if you fancy an interesting property which is in really good condition and you want to be central to things with helpful owners at hand I would strongly recommend this.

A jewel in Ramsgate.

  • 5 out of 5
1 Albion place is a brilliant place to stay when visiting Ramsgate. The flat, adjacent to Albion Park overlooking the English Channel, the beach and the harbour, is beautifully outfitted, pleasantly adorned and bright and cheerful. The living area provides upmarket amenities within a very livable space. The kitchen is outfitted to the hilt, with cookware and appliances to support any budding gourmand. The spacious bedroom and furniture ensure a perfect nights sleep. The décor is very comforting and pleasantly harmonized throughout the flat. Shopping is only minutes away.

We personally had a wonderful stay and thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality and help provided by the hosts, Kiel and Stewart.

Ramsgate on the Isle of Thanet is a destination in every sense of the word. Away from the bustle of the city, it’s location is almost as far south east as you can drive in the UK and it’s so close to France that on a clear day, you can see the northern French coastline. The journey to this Georgian harbour town is well worth it. Ramsgate is one of three large towns making up the district of Thanet (including Broadstairs and Margate) and sits in the middle of fifteen sandy beaches and bays that stretch from Pegwell Bay in the South to Minnis Bay in the North, beaches that have recently been awarded no fewer than 8 ‘Blue Flags’ - that's more than any other area in the country. So it’s easy to see why Ramsgate is fast becoming the place to escape to.

The area has plenty of activities, culture and shopping . You could go surfing at Joss Bay (there’s a surf school there for novices), or you could try your hand at some Windsurfing in Minnis Bay (there’s a school there too). Kite-surfing is becoming very popular, or for the more adventurous there’s a diving school in Margate. Ramsgate has the UK’s only royal harbour (just two minutes from your accommodation) which is lined by bars and cafes where you can sit al-fresco and watch the yachts roll in and out. You can also take a seal-watching boat trip from the harbour side.

One of the best ways to get around the coast is by bike. The Viking Coastal Trail is a 27-mile long seaside trail divided into 6 themed routes. There’s a plethora of golf courses really close by, two of which have held the Open Championship (so they’re pretty good). The nearest one is at North Forelands.

Ramsgate also has a brand new 25m swimming pool with Spa and Fitness Studio.

Shopping: Margate's Old Town is great for Vintage and retro, (clothes, homewares, furniture etc.)

Westwood Cross - 15 minutes from Ramsgate - has all of the big chains for those essentials. Ramsgate has a small local street market every Friday and Saturday.

Further afield, Canterbury city centre (30 minutes by car) offers a further good selection of shops and boutiques.

London is 75 minutes by High-Speed train and the port of Dover is just 30 minutes drive away if you fancy a quick dash to France - you could be tucking into moules-frites by lunchtime!

Nearby Margate, one of the original seaside towns and famous for its 1950’s and 60’s youth culture has seen rapid regeneration over the past four years. The Turner Contemporary - a world class art gallery with frequently changing shows – is a must-see, the stark architecture of the gallery alone juxtaposed with the Georgian old town could compare to the Guggenheim in Bilbao! Visit the Shell Grotto in nearby Cliftonville - a curious, almost pagan place with 70 feet of tunnels and over four million shells set into the walls in beautiful mosaics. Dreamland is also being rebuilt into Europe’s only ‘heritage theme park’ that will host a carefully curated collection of fully restored antique rides.

Broadstairs is perhaps the more gentile relative sitting on Viking Bay, a beautiful bustling cove. The town hosts a variety of events throughout the year including a Food Festival and Folk Week. Morelli’s opened their first ice cream parlour here in 1932 and it still retains much of its interior today. Essential for frothy coffee and delicious ice cream and sundaes.
