Come to paradise for a volcanic adventure - black sand beaches, geothermal hot ponds, lava rock tide pools for snorkeling, natural steam baths and, of course, Volcanoes National Park, nearby to our 'Hale Haumea' cottage in Kalapana Seaview Estates. Just 38 miles south of Hilo on the sunny Puna Peninsula, one mile from the beach, and next door to an eco-resort that provides inexpensive access to pools, hot tubs, sauna, massage therapy, yoga classes, restaurant, internet cafe and more. Pahoa Town, 15 minutes away, offers a complete variety of shops and restaurants. Renowned dolphin expert Naia Rae Fox (see Sept ISLAND's magazine) lives next door and offers guided dolphin swims at half price to our guests. Other Activities: Pool and spa at neighboring resort; Up-close lava viewing as it makes its way to the ocean at sunset.

Cozy cottage in a very scenic part of Hawaii

Hale Haumena is a wonderfully cozy, comfortable, and clean cottage in one of the most ideal locations on the Big Island. The surrounding area is beautiful, virtually free of VOG, and not as populated as other spots. The strip along the coast is a small sunbelt and thus gets less rain than most other places on the Hilo side. We spent our days rotating between the gorgeous black sand beach, soaking in the relaxing and rejuvenating warm ponds, and snorkeling at the Kapoho Tide Pools. The cottage offers all the basic amenities, a visually pleasing atmosphere, and a screened-in lanai. Hale Haumena is the perfect place for anyone with allergies, asthma, migraines, or chemical sensitivities as fragranced products are not permitted. All the environmentally safe ones are provided for your use in addition to scent-free bedding. We enjoyed a Qi Gong class at Kalani, the nearby yoga resort, which offers a variety of programs and massage. The local community offers a very friendly ambiance. After enjoying the local culture and beauty for just a week, we decided to move here permanently! It's a very special area of Hawai'i.

Absolutely adorable!

We were pleasantly surprised at how wonderful this house was designed and equipped. We could not have chosen better. We especially appreciated the kitchen. Everything you might need is there and in nice condition. The bed was comfortable and clean. The closet (walk-in) was a big plus for our one week stay. The ultimate surprise was how much we enjoyed how the house opened into the screened lanai. We felt like we were in a paradise rain forest. It was easy to find, and not too far from the main attractions like the warm ponds and the black sand beach. The picture does not do it justice.

Everything you need!

This extremely well stocked house has everything you need for your stay on Big Island - including a cooler with ice packs and snorkel gear. Even the information book Diane provides for local spots was perfect (especially the swimming spots). We often referenced it before heading out. The house is very clean and extremely comfortable. We both slept so soundly there. Perhaps its the cool breezes or the evening songs, but all I know is I did not want to leave. After our restful sleep, I especially loved having my breakfast on the screened-in porch.
While you are in the middle of a neighborhood, you would never know with the incredible vegetation and the lack of cell coverage or internet (a welcomed change). I felt like we were in a remote tropical paradise.

We found ourselves in the street after arriving to a rental that was not as described, especially when it comes to sanitation. We sent some request by VRBO and Diane was one of the first renters to answer or request. When we drove to the place we were a bit concerned that the house was more private than we imagine, but this ended up being the best feature. The home was very clean and fully equipped; we LOVED the farmers market near the house and the nice neighborhood. The screened patio was adorable. We are glad that we got to stay here and enjoy nature!
