The apartment is no smoking apartment!
The Marais was the nobility's favourite place of residence from the time that Henri IV built the Place des Vosges or Place Royale as it was known in the 17th century; the mansions they built now house museums such as the Carnavalet (on the history of Paris) , the Picasso Museum, the Victor Hugo museum to name but a few. It is also an area of choice for today's Parisians who roam the historic
mansions, their gardens and the streets full of both trendy and sophisticated shops that are open on Sundays.
There are 3 open-air food markets within 3 or 4 blocks of the apartment as well as a supermarket and also speciality shops a block away. The Metro and buses stop a block or two away and it is a short 2 block walk to the river and the Ile St Louis , another gem of 17th and 18th century architecture. The rue Saint Paul that links the two, is lined with antique and jewellery shops.
The restaurants serving the area range from the historic Alsatian Brasserie Bofinger ( 2 blocks away), next to the Bistrot du Dome (known for its fish); wine bars such as Ma Bourgogne on the Place des Vosges and the ultimate Ambroisie also on the Place des Vosges.
The great 19th century author, Victor Hugo, went to mass at the St Paul church down the street and Mozart also stayed in a mansion down the street on his first trip to Paris when he watched the wedding procession of King Louis XIV. But the Bastille Opera House built in the XXth century also close by, connects to modern day Paris and its charms.
