Very Comfortable Former Winemaker's House In Change, Nr Beaune

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 - 7 nights

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Nolay - Le Pigeonnier

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6

In the pretty village of Change, situated just 2 minutes from Nolay in the Valley de la Cozanne, and on the ‘Route des Vignobles de Beaune à Cluny’, you will find this very comfortable 3 bedroom former winemaker’s house.

Built at the turn of the 19th Century it was one of the traditional houses of the longstanding winemaker ‘Domaine Georges Guérin’ in Change. The lower level served as a ‘Cave’ holding large barrels of wine, and the first floor was used as the living area with access to the rear garden and its unique ‘pigeonnier’.

100 years later, Gérard Martini, fell in love with the house and gave it a new name, ‘Le Pigeonnier’. He has completely restored the property, conserving much of the original charm & antique furniture but at the same time has created a well equipped home with a delightful bathroom & cleverly designed kitchen, satelite TV, Audio and free Wi-fi. You will enjoy original ‘Art Noveau’ elements such as floral and geometric floor tiles, the rosace, stained glass. Now recently the property has been bought by Karl and christine De Bruyne who will keep the spirit of the house intact who have decided to open up the attic exposing the original beams and typical stone wall.

Outside: You arrive at the walled courtyard and double gates. There is ample parking for 2 cars here in the courtyard. An original well has been turned into a pretty fountain feature.

Wide steps lead to the upper garden and outdoor dining area. A wooden table and 6 chairs under metal framed gazebo with outdoor kitchen and BBQ provide the perfect ambiance for al-fresco dining. A wood store can be found by the back door – wood supplied for those cooler summer evenings.

The garden is fully enclosed and has many flower and shrub borders.

At the rear of the property you will see 'Le Pigeonnier' (giving the name to the property) which has been nicely restored. Next to it there is the swimming pool and the little spa with, sauna, shower and gym with a professional fitness bike. The stereo unit provides beautiful Feng Shui or Yoga music while you are relaxing

In the court-yard you can play table tennis, petanque

Biking and hiking: The 'Pigeonnier' is ideally located for your biking and hiking activities. There is detailed information in the house where to bike and hike.

Behind the property you find the recently opened 'VOIE VERTE' (Green Way') built on the old railway track: ideal for hiking, biking and even roller skating. When you go to the right you pass the beautiful Maranges vinyards, you come down to Santenay with it's nice Castles, you can turn right again and continue along the 'Canal du Centre'.

EXTRA: there are 7 (!) Bikes for your use (free of charge): 4 mountain bikes for adults, 2 MTB's for children of different ages and one little bike with supporting wheels for a real 'youngster'. We provide 2 bike-baby-seats plus enough helmets.

Wine and wine making: Our neighbours 'the Monnots' are vintners (Domaine Monnot-Roche). If you are interested, Christophe can explain a lot about the wines and wine making. Of course you can taste his Hautes-Côtes-de-Beaune, Maranges 1er Cru, Chardonnay, Aligoté...

About Karl De Bruyne

We are Christine and Karl De Bruyne, married for about 24years with 2 studying daughters Hannah (22) and Emma (20). We live in Belgium in a village near Antwerp.

Karl De Bruyne purchased this house in 2014

Why Karl De Bruyne chose Nolay

Burgundy is a region we have been visiting numerous times over the years, usually returning home with a trunk full of delicious wines. In July 2013 we started thinking of buying a house in Burgundy and started our search which lasted about 8 months and took as several drives up and down. We were on the verge of abandoning our search when we fell upon “Le Pigeonnier”. It was love at first sight and by the end of the next week the deal was sealed.

What makes this house unique

wonderfully situated amidst hills, vineyards in a very quiet village not far away from towns with restaurants and commerces within cycling distance.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We arrived Wednesday evening after a flight from NYC thru London to Paris and a four hour drive to Change.

Christine and Gerard greeted us in front of your gite and showed us around.

They are very kind.

Have been on a "whirlwind" touring the area. The Cote de Beaune villages are so scenic and way beyond our expectations. We have toured many areas of France, but this is fantastic in its beauty and superb food and wine.

After exhausting ourselves for the first two days we decided to cook in tonight..which gave a chance to really enjoy our home.

We now understand why you fell in love with the Pigeonnier and Change. We have too.

Wish we had arranged to say longer.

Thanks for letting us stay in your lovely country home.

Comfortable living in an historic home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Gite, named Pigeonnier, for several days in early September, located in the tiny village of Change, 2 kilometers from Nolay in the heart of the Cote de Beaune. Walk out your door and borrow the bikes provided, a short climb up the village hill, and you are on the Voie Vert, a onetime railroad line, now a bicycle path from Beaune to Santenay. Wonderful low gradient biking through scenic vineyards with easy access to the Route de Grand Cru. Across the small stream in Change and there are walk and hike paths up through the vineyards to Mount Reme with wonderful vistas of the countyside. Enjoy several superb restaurants in close by Nolay.

The home, very old, has been lovingly modernized, but in the fashion of French “county”, preserving some original furniture and an authentic feeling of onetime county living but with modern conveniences. There are two bedrooms quite separated from each other and one bath.

The main living area has an open feel with fireplace, kitchen, dining and sitting areas all in one space. We loved the home upon first sight but really grew to relish our time at the Pigeonnier when we decided to cook in. The kitchen is very fully stocked with every device and implement you might need to prepare a repast. Enjoy the views through the wide windows, sip some Burgundy bubbly, called Cremant, and enjoy your evening at your Change home. You will love it.

A nice change in Change

  • 5 of 5

After 10 wonderful but busy days in Paris, Change was indeed a welcomed change in focus and activities to a quieter week in a village atmosphere in Burgundy. The house was ideally appointed with all the necessary amenities, including sauna and pool, although it was cool enough for these Australians to use the fireplace. I particularly liked the kitchen and the excellent selection of bicycles. Ideal house and activities for family or couple like us (55+). It is a great base from which to drive to and discover many pretty, historic towns and larger centres such as Beaune and, of course, wine and food. I particularly enjoyed the trip to the superb markets at Changy for fresh veg, bread and patisseries, cheese, and of course the wonderful stuffed duck, all of which the kitchen was designed for. Walking or riding one of the bicycles (along the bikeway/old rail track) into Nolay for coffee or dining was a delight. We had an excellent up-market meal at La Bourgonde. One of the special experiences in Nolay (and France!) was a visit to the delightful 'Le The dans la Vigne' tea room adjacent to the medieval market. Ride a bike on a loop through four sleepy villages in about as many kilometres, or down to Santanay and the Canal.

One of the nicest parts of our stay was meeting the very amiable Gerhard, the owner, after a trouble free online booking conversation. He was there to greet and welcome us and had the property so well prepared. He was a wealth of information, good advice and the odd story. Wish I was there now.

Quiet Cottage in Wine Village

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I stayed here in October for 6 nights. The location is in a small village in the wine country of Burgundy. We loved being in the countryside, yet close enough to visit bigger towns like Beaune and Dijon and places father away like Vezelay and Fontenay. The home is small, but very well stocked, especially the kitchen. It is also charming in the decorations. The owners friends who are winemakers, Frederique and Christophe, were very helpful and friendly.

Delightful and charming retreat

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our week holiday at this property. Located in a very quiet village, it was a haven. The mountain bikes allowed the 4 of us to explore the beautiful surroundings. The owners excelled in customer service and it was a real bonus to have condiments available, if needed, without having to start from scratch. The boys loved the sauna and pool area. Altogether, very charming and we will return.

Absolutely Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

We booked with Gerhard a year in advance as this was our 30th Anniversary trip and our first time to France. First, the description and pictures couldn’t have properly described this very unique home. It was truly an incredible place to stay for 10 days. The location made it a perfect base camp for exploration of the Burgundy wine region and the accommodations were fantastic. As we like to cook, the kitchen was well equipped and had everything needed to make our dinner each evening. The Wellness area with the Sauna was incredible and a real treat after a day or wine tasting, riding bikes, walking, hiking, etc. We went into Nolay to the Bar Carznot everyday for our coffee and walked around the corner to the bakery for fresh croissants and bread every morning. Please meet the Monnot’s, Christopher & Frederique early in your stay, their hospitality is unmatched, they invited us to a private wine tasting in their wine cellar built in 1653. Gerhard was fantastic to work with and provided all the information we needed to make our stay enjoyable. We would recommend this place, give it 5 stars and we will return to stay again.

What an absolute treat and delight to have spent a week at this very special cottage. Perfectly located in very quiet Change just a few kilometers outside Nolay and close to all one would want to visit in Burgundy. The cotage is tastefully and thoughtfully furnished and equipped with all one needs for a very comfortable and pleasant stay (except, of course, the key to the wine cellar!!). The owner was exceptionally helpful and responded prompty and fully to all our requests via email prior to our arrival. Having the use of a pool, sauna and bicycles was an added bonus. Apart from the 'groaning water pipe' that we heard frequently, we absolutely loved our stay and will most certainly return. Highly recommended

Change is a charming little village, home to 8 winemakers! In the heart of Hautes Côtes de Beaune, 20km south west of Beaune (Wine capital of Burgundy), 28km North west of Chalon (large town on the River Saone) and 25 km east of Autun (roman town and gateway to the Morvan Natural parc), Change is perfectly situated for exploring the best that Burgundy has to offer. The Canal du centre is just a few minutes away, where you can walk, cycle and horse ride along the bridle paths. Hikers can start in Change, either from the ‘Circuit de Trois Monts’ or the famous GR7. From the top of Mont des Trois Croix you will find a fantastic view. The 4(!) mountain bikes at the house will help you to experience the surrounding natural beauty that Change has to offer. For those who like a little bit of ‘Las Vegas’, Santenay with its castles and famous casino is just 5 km away.
