It is situated just a couple of minutes walk from Mozart's birthplace in the pedestrian area of Salzburg's Old Town. All the famous coffee houses and restaurants, together with the best shops and boutiques are right on your doorstep.
It was completely renovated in 2011 allowing for a 21st century lifestyle in a 14th century house.
The apartment is on the 4th floor (no lift).
My husband and I spent 3 nights in Salzburg. The weather was great! The close proximity to everything in Salzburg was wonderful. We decided that the apartment was also our personal stair master, as there are 80 steps from street level to the apartment. It really wasn't bad (I had a bum knee!) as there are substantial landings in between each staircase with many things to see. The apartment made us feel that we were staying in a 5 star luxury suite. The furnishings are first class, as is the owners. Gabi and Michael are very nice and easy to work with. We went to Eagle's Nest on the city bus for the day, up to the fortress and walked all over old Salzburg. If we get back to Salzburg, we will definitely be staying at the apartment.
My husband and I decided to use VRBO to find a flat for our stay in Salzburg, and are we glad we did! We knew we wanted to be in the heart of the city, so carefully and thoughtfully read all the listings. When we found this listing, we began an online dialog with the owner, (Gabrielle, "Gabi"), who gave us great pointers on Salzburg, and based on our requirements, helped us determine which unit would serve us best. We chose Apartment I, and were so happy there, we wished we could have extended our stay a few more days.
It was important to us that we stay in as "authentic" a building as possible, and we were not disappointed! The building dated to the late 1300's, and while we never learned the history of the building, assumed it may have been a monastery. There was no elevator, and our flat was on the top (4th) floor, but that was absolutely fine with us! (Just good to know if stairs are a concern....)
The flat was gorgeous! It was newly renovated, with modern fixtures and was beautifully appointed. True, the bath was "separated", with shower and sink at one end off the kitchen, and toilet (and sink) at the other end (near entrance). But so what? They were beautiful, and we actually liked the privacy the afforded us!
The bed was lovely---would have been considered "heavenly" by Starwood standards! The television cable had many extended stations, so for the first time on our European vacation we actually had English options. There was also stereo, very comfortable seating in the living room, and secure wifi.
The kitchen was great, and had a large refrigerator! We were also able to catch up on our laundry!
I could go on and on about this lovely apartment, but want to make sure to mention how convenient we were to everything! We set out on foot every day, and had so many conveniences nearby. Restaurants, shopping, history!
We will absolutely return to Salzburg someday, and wouldn't consider staying anywhere else!
Location, location, location! Right in the heart of the old city, short walk to all the key places to visit. We loved getting the flavor of living like a local with the bakery just a few steps away from the front door; Spar groceries within a couple of blocks. The apartment is just off of the Alter Market Platz with a sausage wagon there every evening for a quick and tasty sausage, roll and beer. Every morning a market with fresh produce, meats, cheeses, bakery was just a few blocks away (though we discovered a larger one at Mirabell Platz , across the river on our way to the train station our last morning).
For a building built in 1374 (!) the apartment (#1) has all the modern conveniences along with the historical significance. Comfortable bed, pillows and linens and a fabulous shower! Kitchen equipped with better than the basics. A great, comfortable place to come home to after long, fun days of exploring the city.
When we arrived to check in, we were greeted at the front door with the welcoming sight of a smiling Igor at the end of a long day of train travel! He was very helpful with local information which aided in our getting quickly oriented to Salzburg.
We arrived by train from Vienna to the Salzburg train station and wheeled our suitcases for about 15 mins to the Old Center of Salzburg. After finding the street, we were met by Igor, the housekeeper of the three apartments on the fourth floor of this wonderful old house. Ours was the most recently remodeled and the largest. When entering the apartment, we loved the charm of the decor, the state of the art kitchen and bathroom, and how well maintained and clean it was. We immediately felt at home, ad even though we left early every day to explore, we so enjoyed returning in the evening to this wonderful place. Climbing the four flights of stairs was definitely worth the effort to get to this most charming apartment.
Over the five days we took an excursion to Eagle's Nest and Berchesgarden with Panorama Tours that was wonderful, and the Sound of Music Tour which is not to be missed. We also did our own excursion by several buses and a train to Hallstatt that was incredible. In midst the mystical Salzkammergut Lake Region lies Hallstatt, Austria’s oldest village, who’s culture dates back to the 8th century B.C. Quite possibly the most photographed Austrian village, Hallstatt is visually framed by the Hallstaettersee and the massive Dachstein mountain range. It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and not to be missed.
Our communication with the owner was delightful and easy. Using PayPal was an added plus.
We HIGHLY recommend this wonderful apartment. It was a perfect place to end our amazing time in Austria.
We stayed in Gabi's apartment in late August. Greeted by Igor who helped with our luggage ( on the fourth floor) and oriented us with our home away from home, this superbly appointed apartment matched the beauty of Salzburg. Well located near the AlterMarkt we were steps away from restaurants cafes and all the beauty Salzburg had to offer.
We couldn't have had a better experience with our first visit to Salzburg. We would definitely stay again, hopefully for longer next time.
My daughter and I recently stayed ( July 2011 ) in Gabi's # 1 apartment located in the Old Town part of Slazburg. It is absolutely fabulous.... great location, tons of charm and all the conveniences that you would need! Gabi has done an amazing job of rennovating this beautiful old & unique building ( from 1374 ) with very modern decor, accents, lovely linens & towels and wonderful fixtures. The apartment was very clean and well presented. We would stay again in a heart beat and will definitely recommend this accomodation to friends and family. We were met outside the building by Igor who took the time to explain the apartment well, local restaurants ( lots of them ), grocery store, local food market, shopping, local events happening, tours ( " Sound of Trudy ", a walking Sound of Music tour of Slazburg was fabulous! ) He also had maps and brochures available for us to use. The tourist information place is just a couple minutes walk away. We actualy stayed in one evening to cook and have a candle light dinner and the kitchen had eveything we needed. This apartment is located in the old historic part of Salzburg with the cobble stone streets and all the charm you would want in Slazburg. We took in a Mozart concert with Opera & dinner which was wonderful. There is just so much to see from this location, all within walking distance. An early morning hike up to the castle followed by stopping at a local bakery for coffee & breakfast topped off our stay there. We wish we had more time in Salzburg and if we return we will definitely stay in one of Gabi's apartments!
