The site is completely idyllic and tranquil and blessed with verdant beech woods, lovely gardens and orchards filled with birdsong and gently rippling water. The Carthusian Friary was established in 1232 and was home to the monks of Hinton who lived in seclusion in clusters of small cottages with a little church and out buildings. Buried walls, occasional pieces of carved stone, and evidence of the fish ponds they built are all the archaeological remains of the buildings used and lived in by the Lay Brothers. Legend has it that in the year of 1232, on the very day that Ela, the Countess of Salisbury, founded the Priory at Hinton as well as the Abbey at Lacock , she stopped to take a drink from the spring at Friary and it was named Ela's Well in her honour. It still runs merrily through the gardens.
There are two floors, both bright and spacious with lovely vistas.
An open white fitted kitchen along one wall has an electric hob and oven, a microwave, a large fridge and freezer, a dishwasher, a washing machine and dryer combined and a cupboard for storage. Alongside is a breakfast bar and 4 stools or you can relax at a dining table and chairs to seat 6.
The living area has a sumptuous rug with a lavish 3-seater sofa, armchair and coffee table in front of the feature coal-effect fire. There is a Freeview TV with DVD/stereo radio and a selection of films, books and chest of drawers for storage.
The contemporary tiled shower room has a power shower, hand basin and WC. Plus further storage.
Upstairs is flooded with light from 6 Velux windows in the eaves and French doors leading out onto a private balcony. It is spacious and comfortable with a 4'6'' bed and a double sofa-bed (suitable for 2 children). Storage is provided by a large chest of drawers, a dressing table/desk, coffee table and a large antique wardrobe providing hanging space downstairs.
Friary Coach House has the most beautiful setting, with lovely flower gardens, sheep roaming the grounds, the River Frome meandering past and natural water meadows stretch over the opposite bank. The villages of Westwood and Freshford are just in sight. Explore 11 acres of woodland, pastures, large ponds and an orchard all dotted with benches so you can relax and marvel at the views and the tranquillity. There are muncjac deer, barn owls, herons, horseshoe bats and abundant wildlife. The house has croquet and badminton, bats and balls and spare fishing rods. It's popular with ramblers and there are plenty of delightful walks along local footpaths including a 2.5 mile circular walk from the house past Iford with a pub stop at Freshford for refreshments. There are maps and guides in the house. The owner can also arrange horse riding, river boats and fishing for trout and chubb.
