Guestbook comments from the owner
The apartment was perfect for me and my brother. It was comfortable and well equipped for our needs. We especially appreciated having the kitchen to prepare breakfasts and dinners. The location was very convenient. The owner's daughter, Marilee, is very gracious and gave us very good information about groceries, transportation, etc. Both my brother and I will definitely recommend the apartment to anyone traveling to Rome. Thanks to John and Marilee for the wonderful accommodations and for all they did to make our stay in Rome so wonderful.

Many years ago my oldest daughter married an Italian living in Rome. Since that time, my wife, Jean, and I have made an annual trip to Rome and Italy to visit her and her growing family. After some years and two growing grandchildren, it became obvious that we needed to have our own place when we came to visit. Hence, a search for a convenient and comfortable apartment for use during our visits. Luckily we found such a place in the same neighborhood where my daughter and family resided. Since that time, we have rented this apartment to tourists during the time that we are not occupying the premises. My daughter acts as our agent in Rome and is prepared to offer her services and knowledge of the city to renters if needed. We have traveled extensively throughout Italy and Europe and consider Rome to be our second home. We try to express our enthusiasm for the city and the country to our prospective renters in hopes that they too will we able to experience the incredible wealth of art, history and culture that the city offers.

John Mortarotti purchased this apartment in 1996

Besides wanting to find an apartment in the same neighborhood as my daughter's area of Rome, we wanted a place that was residential in nature, quiet, safe and if possible, family oriented. At the same time, we wanted it to be accessible to the center of Rome where one could easily explore the many wonders of the eternal city yet experience, first-hand, the Roman way of life. The apartment is a mere 20 minutes by public transportation from the very center of Rome. This transportation is very reliable, convenient and accessible. There are many amenities in close proximity to the apartment. Restaurants, Trattorias, bars, shops, street markets, supermarkets, banks, post office, department stores, pharmacies, etc, etc. that help one to enjoy Roman life to the fullest. Also, the apartment is located just one block from the new terminal servicing the city's direct rail line to and from Rome's International airport. This is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Rome and the residents are mainly upper middle-class in stature.

ROOMY AND COMFORTABLE APARTMENT

  • 5 out of 5
We have rented this apartment several times in the last few years. Our last visit was for 2 weeks in Dec. of 2008. The apt. is roomy, comfortable and pleasant. The views from the balconies allow you to view the river below and the city around you. We especially enjoyed shopping for fruit, veggies, meats, flowers, etc. at the nearby, daily street market. Two supermercatos( supermarkets) are also close by.
The bus system is regular and easily used to reach the center of Rome. The owner's daughter(a resident of the area) is extremely helpful. She will meet you at the train station, give you tips to enhance your stay, and answer all your questions regarding bella Roma. We have always enjoyed our visits to the area and apartment.

Owner's Response: Bill and Pam, along with several other couples and past tenants are among a group that have rented our apartment several times. We are always anxious to increase and upgrade our services and amenities to such renters since they are our best advertisement of the quality of our facilities and premises. Their satisfaction, comments and suggestions are the standards that we strive to achieve and promote in the presentation of the rental property.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

  • 5 out of 5
We turned this apartment into our home away from home for 10 days. Booking it was a breeze with the owner, John. And his daughter, Marilee was there to great us upon our arrival to get us set up in the apartment.
She was very thorough on giving us the run down on the apartment, the area, public transport, etc. She also got back with us quickly the one day we accidently locked the keys in the apartment (oops ).
We really loved staying there. A public bus has a stop right in the apartment parking lot that gets you downtown in minutes. There's also a subway station well within walking distance if you need that mode of transport to get you here or there.
We booked this apartment first when we made our visit to Italy plans. As our plans developed, we decided we wanted to see other parts of Italy. So, we decided to keep the apartment for the 10 days, and use it as a home base.
We left the apartment and the bulk of our luggage, and just brought carry bags and visited Florence for a 2 night stay. We took the high speed train there, and enjoyed it very much.
Then we came back "home" for a couple days, and then did the same thing in visiting the island of Capri. We took the high speed train to Naples, and then the local Circumvesuviana line to Sorrento to catch the ferry to Capri. We did a stop at Pompeii on the way.
After our visit to Capri for 2 nights, we took the ferry directly back to Naples, and then the high speed train back "home", to our apartment in Rome.
Then we had a couple days left to chill in our neighborhood, and see a few more sites in Rome.
We had a really good time there, and enjoyed some great food at the local restaurants around the apartment. As well as meeting some really nice people in the area.
If we had it all over again, the only thing we'd change is we would stay a bit longer next time. The apartment is very comfortable, loved getting up in the morning and having coffee on the balcony. Which has a very nice view BTW.
You can't go wrong staying at this apartment, would highly recommend it.

ROME VACATION APPARTMENT

  • 5 out of 5
This appartment was WONDERFUL. It is beautiful with plenty of room. The appartment has everything you need for a home away from home. After long days of sight seeing it is a welcome, relaxing place. Especially nice is the enjoyment of relaxing on the deck overlooking the river. The appartment is very close to all public transportation (trains, metro and busses) making our sightseeing very easy. in addition the neighboorhood has resturants and grocery stores.
This was our first Europe vacation "on our own". Marilee met us and provided us with all the information we need to enjoy our vacation abroad without stress !!! THANK YOU.

COMFORTABLE, SPACIOUS, CONVENIENT AND AFFORDABLE

  • 5 out of 5
This was out first visit to Rome. The apartment was all that we expected and more. This is the way to do Rome. The public transport system of Rome is so easy it can be learned in a couple of minutes. We found so many ways into the city (about 15 minutes) we never used the same way twice just for variety.

Don't shy away from the buses as the metro does not go into much of the historical district of Rome. Some are very crowded in the rush hour and due care should be taken with your wallet or purse, we met someone who lost their wallet on the public transit system which can ruin an otherwise fine vacation.

The neighborhood was so quiet and the balconies offered tree lined views of the river Aniene and the northern suburbs beyond. We prepared about half our meals in the kitchen walking to nearby supermarkets to pick up our groceries. Grocery shopping is such an enjoyable thing to do when experiencing another culture. Of course we had to pay insane prices for some meals out in central Rome too. If you want to eat out at bargain prices simply enjoy an evening out in the local neighborhood which abounds with reasonably priced restaurants.

Our stay went without a hitch, the bed was comfortable, the kitchen easy to use. The TV had all the cable channels. As I recall the apartment is about 30 square meters which would make it about 1000 sq feet. A lot of value and all the space 2 people can use.

Marilee spent about an hour with us explaining the apartment, the neighborhood, the transport system, and the city itself. She was most kind and helpful and met us at the train as we initially stepped off at the Nomentana stop.

For us this was an ideal place to stay. We get tired of hotel rooms and this place offered the comforts of home after a busy day hoofing the sights and hearing the sounds of busy Rome.

GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY APARTMENT, IN AN AREA WHERE YOU CAN LIVE LIKE A LOCAL.

  • 5 out of 5
We are a married couple who commenced our Golden Gap year in Rome. This apartment suited our needs perfectly. It was clean, secure and well presented. The beds were comfortable, kitchen well-equipped, cosy lounge room, very functional bathroom and was well stocked with a good range of English language travel guides, novels and videos.

We found the communication, information and advice by John who owns the apartment and his daughter Marilee who lives locally and acts as the property manager to be outstanding. Both of them quickly and comprehensively replied to emails and made sure that we were met at the apartment, even though it was late on Good Friday night. The maps, transport timetables, helpful hints and local knowledge provided to us made it extremely easy for us to quickly feel at home in the Monte Sacro neighbourhood. We were able to shop locally in nearby open air markets and local shops. Although our Italian was extremely limited, the very friendly locals ensured that we were made welcome. Free samples of cheese, strawberries and gelato made shopping fun! We were able to purchase the freshest of fresh ingredients, excellent cheese and meat, very cheaply. We loved living in a non-tourist area where very little English was spoken. We had a favourite little shop to have our coffee and pastry at each morning and be served by the same lady who was just delightful and made us so welcome. The shop wasn't fancy but it was good. Old men sat in the corner playing cards, locals bought their drink and chatted to our wonderful shop owner at the counter and on Easter Sunday morning we were not allowed to pay a cent for our morning tea. Buono Pasquale!

Yet we were still reasonably close to the centre of Rome, only 20 minutes by bus or train. We were easily able to see and experience the brilliant array of ancient sites, buildings, sculptures and more that is unique to this amazing city.

Thankyou John and Marilee. Your apartment was perfect for everything we needed and we definitely had fun exploring the local neighborhood. So much more interesting, homely and less expensive than staying in a hotel designed for tourists. That we can do anywhere. This apartment would be perfect for 2 people who want to get a taste of local life as well as do the tourist things fairly independently.

Apartment is located in a quiet residential area just outside the center of Rome. The neighborhood contains banks, street markets, supermarkets, newsstands, boutiques, pharmacies, laundromats, post office, bars, restaurants, etc all within 1 or 2 blocks distance. There is a bicycle, jogging path that borders the river directly in front of the apartment and has children's playgrounds included. Transportation to the city center is very efficient and accessible by public bus or Metro just 20 minutes distance. One of the best preserved and extensive catacombs in Rome is just several blocks distant. There are many excellent restaurants, trattorias and Pizzerias in the neighborhood that serve authentic Roman cuisine at reasonable prices. For those wishing to prepare their own meals there are several street markets, supermarkets, fruit and vegetable stands, butchers and bakeries within 2 blocks from the apartment. The area, Monte Sacro, was, until after World War II, the seat of many Villa owned by wealthy Romans. In the 1950's it the city expanded greatly and much of Monte Sacro was developed for housing the growth in population. It's proximity to the city center has made it a very desirable residential neighborhood in Rome. Typical of most large cities, this type of neighborhood contains all the amenities that one could possibly want or need. The apartment is particularly well situated since the street on which it is located borders the Aniene river that flows into the Tiber as it slowly meanders through the northeast part of Rome.

The city has built a bicycle-jogging path along this river that extends several miles. along this path there are many parks benches, playgrounds and other amenities that afford opportunities for residents to be able to access outdoor activity in the center of a bustling city neighborhood.
