Luxury rental with local English agent and daily cleaning service

A Parino is a beautifully restored old olive mill in a peaceful setting close to the historic city of Lucca. The property offers not only a lovely private rural setting but also the convenience of being five minutes from the nearest village and 15 minutes from Lucca. The house is newly restored to a very high standard with great taste and charm using authentic Tuscan materials including antique cotto floors and beamed ceilings. The interiors are elegantly furnished with antiques and classic wrought iron furniture, creating a very attractive rustic yet elegant style. Particularly attractive is the large veranda stretching across one side of the property offering views of the surrounding hills, ideal for al fresco dining and relaxation. The pool is overlooked by the veranda in a large garden with mountain stream and woodlands. Perfect for walks and hill climbing. Behind the house is a renovated guest apartment, which accommodates 4 guests. Perfect for those who want a little more privacy

History: The property is located on the Via Clodia, the ancient Roman road, so is surrounded by history. It is also at the centre of the Gothic or Green Line, which was the German defensive line against the Allies in WW2. Above the property in the hills are the old fortifications.

Beauty: It is the tranquility and serenity of A Parino that most guests love the most. Deep in a hidden valley, it is the beauty of the location that attracts regular visitors. The house is surrounded by hillsides, which are full of local wildlife - deer, foxes, porcupines, badgers and wild boar. Above fly a pair of nesting eagles while swallows dip down to catch a fleeting dip in the pool. At night, the fireflies come out.

Children: All children of all ages love A Parino. While the TV and Internet are available, few actually use it. Most, especially the younger ones are playing down by the stream, where they build dams and catch tadpoles or frogs. The older ones go wandering in the hills or swim in the pool. There are also board games available: chess, Scrabble, playing cards available when they prefer the coolness of being inside.

The house is large and very comfortable with a kitchen, dining room, living area and utility room downstairs and 5 bedrooms upstairs. The white walls and ceiling are very high and traversed by traditional wooden beams. The kitchen has very modern appliances. Most people prefer to dine out on the terrace or in the rear patio, close to the BBQ, rather than in the dining room. The living room is all soft seating around a large fireplace, with a TV and a games/book cupboard. The main garden has seating in a pergola and also many sunbeds by the pool. There is a covered car port to shade the cars from the sun. The property is protected by electric gates and surrounded by a large hedge and fence.

About Michael Ringrose

We are originally Irish but have been living overseas, mostly in Asia, for the last 20 years. We are currently based in Singapore and we try to get back to Lucca at least once a year.

Why Michael Ringrose chose Lucca

We came to this area of Tuscany for a family get-together with old friends and fell in love with the location immediately. The hills, the woodland, the tranquility, yet so close to Lucca and its fantastic walls. We saw about 10 properties in one week and A Parino was the cheapest, in the worst condition but with huge potential and a view to die for! By the end of the week, we had paid a deposit and then began 2 years of renovations being managed from afar ( never again! ) However, the house was completely transformed!

The previous owners are the Benedetti family, whose own home overlooks the property on the road to Domazzano and they feel so proud of what has been done to their old home.

This house is also much more than a holiday home to us. We all feel very close to it - it's part of our soul - and any visitor will tell you the same. It is utterly enchanting.

A Parino was definitely more than we expected and more: the photos do not do justice to the whole property. Absolutely fabulous location. The children enjoyed roaming around, catching tadpoles in the stream and chasing fireflies. Excellent restaurants nearby. Lovely candlelit barbecues at home with local fresh produce. We will return!! A superb summer holiday. Thank you to Michael for all his expert advice on what to see and where to eat. We loved having breakfast on the terrace every morning, watching the sun appear from over the hills. Lucca is a beautiful walled medieval city, which is the birthplace of Puccini. The city is mostly pedestrianised, which is fantastic for cycling and walking. Most guests enjoy cycling round the ramparts of the city wall. The countryside north of Lucca is breathtaking with many medieval villages perched on wooded hillsides. There are many beautiful palazzos and vineyards to visit in the area. Florence, Pisa and the beaches are all within a short distance. There are excellent restaurants within 10 minutes of the house. The Tuscan ski resort of Abetone is only 1 hour away and has generally excellent snow from January to March. The immediate surroundings of the house are beautiful and most guests enjoy this most, whether for relaxation or exercise. There are lovely walks and circuits ( between 2 to 6 kms ) in the wooded hills around the property. Visit the ruined church on top of the hill. See the snow-capped Apuan Alps from the hillside opposite the house.

Other Activities: The Ski resort of Abetone is 1 hour away by car

Michael Ringrose, the local manager, lives nearby and gives great local advice on everything. There is free WiFi and English channels on satellite TV. There is also an IPod/IPhone docking station and speakers. A local cook can be reserved at extra cost for private dinners. We provide 1 beach towel, 1 bath towel and 1 hand towel per person per week.
