There is a newly landscaped private garden with parking for 2 cars. The house is situated beside a stream and children may enjoy watching the small fish swim around in the spring and summer. The house is situated at the end of the village so has an open aspect. There is a large area of woodland near the house and you may enjoy a lovely woodland walk along the path which takes you through the woods to a peaceful, picturesque clearing. About Joyce Hornby

My name is Joyce and I live in the village along with my husband, David, and 4 children. I have lived in the village all my life and really appreciate living in the countryside. I have the best of both worlds - living in the country and also being central to Edinburgh and Glasgow so it's very easy to commute to either city if I want a spot of retail therapy or to soak up the atmosphere when there are special events happening. The Edinburgh Festival runs throughout August every year and it's a 25 minute drive into Edinburgh from the house or an easy 20 minute train ride into Edinburgh City Centre. I enjoy village life and being part of the local community and can't imagine ever living anywhere else.

Joyce Hornby purchased this house in 2011

Why Joyce Hornby chose West Lothian

We bought this property in 2011 from a neighbour, a close family friend. Having lived in the village and knowing it's been admired by so many people over the years, we decided to refurbish the house and let it out as a holiday home to give others the opportunity to enjoy the surroundings. We refurbished the whole house from top to bottom, including ceilings and floors! There is a large garden with the property and my husband, who is a landscaper, has been busy designing and working in the garden to create a drive, lawn and quiet seating area. The house has an open aspect at the side and looks towards nearby woodland. Many people have commented that they didn't know the village existed because it's certainly not what you expect to find nestled in the rolling countryside.

What makes this house unique

I love the house as it's so familiar to me, having spent many years visiting our dear friend. Now that it belongs to my family, and I have added my personal touches to the house, I am very proud of what we've achieved. I enjoy living in the village. It's a small, friendly place where I know holidaymakers enjoy a peaceful, calm retreat. There's a lovely woodland walk near the house. We've recently noticed some deer there. The woodland is a great place to try and spot wildlife and if you're a bird enthusiast, we have many varieties of birds visiting all year round. With the village being central to Edinburgh and Glasgow, and only 5km from Linlithgow, it's so easy to access other towns and cities. There are a variety of train stations nearby if you prefer to leave the car at the house. Nearby Linlithgow is steeped in history. There is Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, and Linlithgow Loch if you wish to enjoy the tranquility of a quiet stroll around the Loch. There's also a good variety of shops, pubs and restaurants in the locality. There's definitely something for everyone.

Fabulous !!!!

  • 5 out of 5
This house was a perfect location for us group of four to travel all over Scotland. It is a small community that is not well known of but sure leaves a lasting impression. When we had booked our stay I had mentioned that one of the couples was going to be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. When we arrived to the house there was a card, a bouquet of roses and a container of chocolates on the kitchen table. What a nice touch. The couple that own the house are very warm and friendly, also helpful in suggesting places to go and see. The overall experience was fabulous. Would highly recommend. Great place.

Fabulous little house ideal for a relaxing weekend

  • 5 out of 5
This a very fabulous little house in a small village on the edge of Linlithgow and only 30 minutes from Edinburgh. The owners Joyce and David were very welcoming and even provided a larder of essentials for us, and as it was Easter two Easter eggs for the children, which was a really nice touch.

The big selling points of the house were the woods right next door, just perfect for morning and evening strolls. And the wonderful log burner. The heat is just so much more inviting and cosy than a radiator. Honesty there is no better way to end the day with a wee dram infront of a blazing real fire.

Highly reconmended for families or couples wanting to stay outside the immediate hassle and traffic of the city and experience a slower more relaxing weekend away, but still be near Edinburgh, Rosslyn, Leith or Stirling.

Situated centrally between Edinburgh and Glasgow, West Lothian is steeped in history. There are lots of places of interest to visit, beautiful countryside with rolling hills, yet near Edinburgh and Glasgow if you decide to go and soak up the atmosphere in two of Scotland's major cities. Glasgow was the host city for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. There's something for everyone making the area an ideal choice for your holiday in Scotland.

We have several golf courses in the area and guests benefit from a 50% discount at Oatridge Pay & Play Golf Course which is almost on the doorstep. Woodland View holiday house is only 25 km away from Gleneagles, venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup. The Royal Highland Show is on at Ingliston, near Edinburgh, every year in June - we're only a 15 min drive away and, of course, the Edinburgh Festival is in August every year.

If you fancy some retail therapy without going into Edinburgh or Glasgow, we're only a 10 mins drive from The Centre at Livingston. Whatever you're looking to buy, you'll find it here!

Whatever you choose to do, there's definitely something for everyone in the locality and if you decide to travel further afield, we're only an hour's drive away from Callander, Gateway to the Scottish Highlands.

The house itself is in the rural village of Ecclesmachan. The village is situated in beautiful countryside and is regularly admired by all visitors for its picturesque surroundings. The village is a quiet, friendly place to spend your holiday yet it's only 5km from the historic town of Linlithgow, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. From there, it's only a 20 min train journey into Edinburgh and 35 min into Glasgow. There are many places of interest in the locality for adults and children.

We have many visitor attractions in the area too including Linlithgow Palace which is situated in the centre of the town, beautiful Linlithgow Loch, the Falkirk Wheel and Almond Valley Heritage Centre, to name but a few. We're also near the Forth Road and Rail Bridges where many tourists visit to admire the bridges. You may be aware a new Forth Bridge is currently being built. Another popular attraction is Edinburgh Zoo where you can visit the Pandas, Koalas, Elephants and many more animals, however we do have a smaller zoo nearby too called The Five Sisters Zoo. Here also has a great variety of animals including brown bears. The countryside surrounding the village is picturesque so you may want to enjoy some of the walking routes around the area. There's something for everyone to enjoy.
