About Joyce Hornby
My name is Joyce and I live in the village along with my husband, David, and 4 children. I have lived in the village all my life and really appreciate living in the countryside. I have the best of both worlds - living in the country and also being central to Edinburgh and Glasgow so it's very easy to commute to either city if I want a spot of retail therapy or to soak up the atmosphere when there are special events happening. The Edinburgh Festival runs throughout August every year and it's a 25 minute drive into Edinburgh from the house or an easy 20 minute train ride into Edinburgh City Centre. I enjoy village life and being part of the local community and can't imagine ever living anywhere else.
Joyce Hornby purchased this house in 2011
Why Joyce Hornby chose West Lothian
We bought this property in 2011 from a neighbour, a close family friend. Having lived in the village and knowing it's been admired by so many people over the years, we decided to refurbish the house and let it out as a holiday home to give others the opportunity to enjoy the surroundings. We refurbished the whole house from top to bottom, including ceilings and floors! There is a large garden with the property and my husband, who is a landscaper, has been busy designing and working in the garden to create a drive, lawn and quiet seating area. The house has an open aspect at the side and looks towards nearby woodland. Many people have commented that they didn't know the village existed because it's certainly not what you expect to find nestled in the rolling countryside.
What makes this house unique
I love the house as it's so familiar to me, having spent many years visiting our dear friend. Now that it belongs to my family, and I have added my personal touches to the house, I am very proud of what we've achieved. I enjoy living in the village. It's a small, friendly place where I know holidaymakers enjoy a peaceful, calm retreat. There's a lovely woodland walk near the house. We've recently noticed some deer there. The woodland is a great place to try and spot wildlife and if you're a bird enthusiast, we have many varieties of birds visiting all year round. With the village being central to Edinburgh and Glasgow, and only 4 miles from Linlithgow, it's so easy to access other towns and cities. There are a variety of train stations nearby if you prefer to leave the car at the house. Nearby Linlithgow is steeped in history. There is Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, and Linlithgow Loch if you wish to enjoy the tranquility of a quiet stroll around the Loch. There's also a good variety of shops, pubs and restaurants in the locality. There's something for everyone in the local area.
