ALOHA! Long to get away from the hustle and bustle? Are you ready to RELAX? Then welcome to Paradise! If you love Kauai like we do, you'll love staying in our beachfront condo in Kapaa. We're on the third (top) floor (with elevator) in a corner unit with unobstructed views north south and east. Gorgeous sunrises from our lanai (balcony) and views of the beautiful mile-long sandy beach, with its walking, jogging, bicycle trail.

The Pono Kai Resort is located right in the quaint town of Kapaa. You are walking distance from many stores and restaurants, yet are shielded from road and traffic noise by fifteen acres and several other buildings in the complex. All you'll hear in our condo are the mesmerizing sounds of the ocean and the trade winds breezing through the palm trees.

Quiet, quiet, quiet. The sound of the surf and the trade winds rustling through the palm trees instantly soothes jangled nerves, and puts us in a state of wonderful relaxation.

Find any other unit in Pono Kai - with A/C

My wife and I were here on a recent visit to Kauai. We have been to Pono Kai before so we thought we knew what to expect. For some reason we assumed that this unit had air conditioning, but to our dismay found that it was one of only 4 units in the entire building that had not upgraded to add A/C. (For those of you that have not stayed at Pono Kai, it is an older property, and they were not originally built with A/C in the units. However, MOST of the units have upgraded to add A/C). This issue alone made our visit quite an unpleasant experience. The weather was unseasonably warm and humid (even the locals we spoke to mentioned this). Due to this, things never dried out. In fact, we did some laundry and hung some items in the closet that were warm and dry. The next day, the cotton items were damp, due to the humidity. You ‘stuck’ to everything in the condo, the seats, the counter top, the sofa, etc, and the carpeting in the unit never seemed to dry out.
In addition to this, there were other issues with the unit. The door to the lanai did not lock since it was rusted and inoperable, and there was a slight ant problem in the unit as well (kitchen counter top). There were two ant traps on the counter top in the kitchen.
They claim to have someone local to help with any issues. However, the one time we called her (to ask about some toilet paper since they only left one extra roll in the unit, and the front desk refused to give us a single roll), she did not answer the phone and never called us back. We only heard from her the next day since she wanted to know when we would be out of the unit. She called and left a message while we were out for a morning walk and called again an hour after she left the message. It was then that she told us she received our message the previous day but was in Las Vegas. Wait, what? Are you the local person to help with issues in the unit or not?
On the upside, there is complimentary internet access, a comfortable bed, the unit does face the beach, and they did provide enough fans to move the air around. There were also coolers, beach towels, and beach chairs to use if you were so inclined to go to the beach.
So if you don’t mind sweating all day and all of your clothes being constantly wet, then this is the place for you. On the other hand if you want a place that has more up to date amenities, you might try almost any other property at Pono Kai. We will not stay in this unit again.

Owner's Response: I’m sorry that the guest was under the misunderstanding that our unit has air conditioning. There’s nothing in our VRBO ad indicating that, and when I’m asked if we have A/C, I always respond truthfully that we do not. Normally that is not a problem for our third floor unit as the Trade Winds are almost always blowing off the ocean and cooling the apartment. That said, when the weather is "unseasonably warm and humid" and the Trade Winds stop, it can get uncomfortable. Unfortunately for this guest’s short 4-night stay, they hit an unseasonably warm and humid few days. This is not very often a problem for Kauai, especially for the East Shore, and in fact most of the private homes in the area do not have air conditioning.

One of the charms Hawaii has for me is the year-around temperate climate. I have specifically chosen NOT to retrofit my apartment with air conditioning because I want to feel the sea breeze and smell the fragrant air coming through our apartment. I think that the vast majority of our guests agree with that as attested to by the high rating that virtually all of our guests give our apartment.

The Pono Kai Resort consists of mostly Time-Share apartments which have been modified, and are managed and maintained by the Pono Kai Resort. Of the privately owned and managed one-bedroom apartments like ours, only 3 out of 13 units have A/C. So if A/C is a necessity for a guest, they should be choosing one of the units with A/C, or go through the Pono Kai Resort booking system and be prepared to spend considerably more for a comparable unit that has air conditioning.

If you are visiting Kauai, Kapa'a is a great area to stay in. And the Pono Kai is located in one of the best parts of Kapa'a. This was my third time staying in D-308. In my opinion it is located in the best part of the complex and has what I think one of the best views in the complex. The unit is more than adequately equipped regardless if you are staying for a few days or a month. You will find just about everything you need for your stay, like a well equipped kitchen, beach chairs, boggie boards, umbrella, ice cooler, beach towels, etc. All for a very reasonable cost.

Perfect location

My sister and I have stayed here for the last few years and plan to return. It is a wonderful condo, clean with comfortable beds, fabulous lanai with ocean view, and close to everything. The four mile beach walk is a great way to begin the day as is sitting on the lanai with a cup of coffee and feeling the lovely ocean breeze. The view and location are perfect and the owners are easy to work with. If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing vacation spot, this is it!

Perfect Island Paradise!

We just returned from our wonderful, 10 day stay in Gary and Barbara's condo! This place is unbelievable... a quiet, beach front corner unit just steps from a gorgeous beach and a walk away to the charming cafe's, restaurants and shops in Kapaa. My husband and I enjoyed the early morning vistas from the lanai, our walks along the beach... on miles of pathways going both ways from the condo, then at the end of the day we pulled out the beach chairs and sat and watched the pretty sunsets on a very empty beach. You can't beat the location of this condo... it's right in the middle making for an quick drive to all of the sites on the island. The town of Kapaa's easy ways and slow pace made our holiday relaxing and fun. We especially enjoyed the weekly farmer's market held each Wednesday... just a walk away. Thanks for sharing your perfect island paradise with us... I know we'll be back!

Home away from home!

Gary's condo is outstanding! It's centrally located for easy access to the South and North. The views from the condo are unparralled; the condo is about 60' from the ocean and a beach. Gary has been very thoughtful and practical in his choice of amenities; he has lots of beach equipment and lots of cooking utensils/pans/containters.He even has glass containers for hot food. I've been coming to Gary's condo for many years, and have noted his annual improvements to it and its amenities. This is a wonderful place to stay, and an excellent value. And it's close to Monico's, my favorite restaurant on Kauai.

Absolutely fantastic location

My wife and I spent the first 2 weeks in March in this unit. It was exactly as described by the owners. The grounds are beautifully maintained, we noticed that the outdoor grills were cleaned every morning and the landscaping was immaculate. It was a beautiful location, just steps from the 4+ mile walking, biking trail and just as close to the beach. We walked the trail most every morning, it was great with fantastic views. It’s really convenient that beach chairs/towels are supplied with the unit, makes the time on the beach more enjoyable. Bike rentals are just next door, $10 for one hour for two bikes. Great, easy ride. The Ono Family Restaurant is also just next door and offers a 10% discount if you mention that you are staying at the Pono Kai. The location of the unit is excellent for seeing the island, roughly midway between north and south on the east side. We also explored Kapaa, an interesting town with shops and great restaurants and bars. Try the $5 Mai Tai during happy hour at Big Wave Dave’s and the second floor of the Olympic Restaurant, with open air tables, is great for people watching. Try the beers at Kauai Island Brewing in Port Allen, the western most brewery in the US. The selection at the Fish Express is fantastic, we went twice. No seating, but brought it back to the unit and had lunch on the lanai. So many things to do: so little time!!!!!

Owner's Response: We've owned our condo there in Kapaa for going on 13 years now, and I didn't know that Ono Family Restaurant (right across the street) gave a 10% discount for Pono Kai guests! That's what I love about having guests: I learn so much from them!
