Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday chalet in Samoens - l'Arbre du Chaumieu
5 Bedroom, 4 Bathroom Chalet with magnificent view, barbecue hut and jacuzzi
The chalet l'Arbre du Chaumieu is situated at one of the most beautiful places in one of the most beautiful valleys of the French Alps. You have a breathtaking view over the valley and mountains. This out of a ruin new built chalet, is situated in a nature reserve above Verchaix, a pretty village near Samoens and Morillon in the Vallée du Giffre. The sun has great influence; while in the valley mist still hangs, you can already enjoy the warmth of the sun. The chalet is built from authentic materials in the typical style of the French Alps. Upon entering, the chalet, the design and furniture, falls as a warm blanket around you, that feeling what you are looking for if you want to spend a holiday in the mountains. And then there's the tree. This tree with branches and leaves still on it, is the centre of the chalet. Everywhere, the tree is in sight. This along with the wood, hundreds of years old, the rocks and boulders, detailed lighting, modern kitchen and carefully chosen details, make this chalet a unique accommodation for your winter holidays but also for a relaxing or active holiday in the summer.
Downstairs there is a guesthouse. The guest house has its own kitchen, dining room, lounge, TV, etc. This is additional to rent but not to let separately; you never have other guests in the chalet. This could be useful with young children or grandparents who wants a little more peace and privacy. Everything is connected internally, so no need to walk outside.
The bedrooms are all made with great care and an eye for detail. Maybe not as big as you are used to, but with a cosiness that rise is not easy. Our goal has always been to build for the group, family and friends.
The loft room or mezzanine has four beds (a double bed and two single beds) and is accessible by ladder from the living room on the first floor. The room is adored by children, because it's like their own adventurous and cosy tree house. You will find chests of drawers and space under one bed for luggage. A tilt window in the roof and the light from the first floor, ensure enough daylight. The bathroom is 'en suite' and has a shower and a large carved boulder to use as washbasin.
The first floor is a big open living space with one bedroom included. This bedroom has one double bed and its own bathroom with shower and washbasin. The kitchen is fully equipped with crockery and cooking utensils and enough storage. It has a cooking island where several guests can cook French style; smell, taste, socialize and above all enjoy life. From the kitchen you have a view over the entire floor, but also over the valley and mountains.
From the wardrobe you have access to the large stairs which leads you to the garden. The dining area seats up to twelve people at an oval table so everyone can see also all table companions. A large window overlooks the ever changing environment and the village of Samoens. Next to the dining area is butcher’s chopping block with four stools. Here you can reflect on your day while enjoying a drink. The accordion system of five doors give you access to the balcony. These doors can be opened completely. The balcony is partially expanded which creates a larger seating area. From here you can hear and see everything in de valley and at the same time enjoy the sunshine. The lounge has TV, stereo and a round wood-stove. On the sofa, made of boulders and pillows, you can sit slumping. The tree is the centre of the house and the pivot for the steps. It is the internal connection between the ground floor and the first floor. The wall around the stairs is made of rocks, with tiny windows and niches. By using the special light system you could make a perfect ambiance like a fairy tale.
The staircase which revolves around the tree in the middle of the house, takes you to the ground floor with multiple bedrooms. The bedroom with bed bunks has always been a hit with children. The bedroom next to it has a high 'cuddle grade' and that's why it's called the 'Chambre d'amour'. Under the bed is a lot of space for the storage of suitcases and bags. On the east is another bedroom with a double bed. When you wake up, you will see the sunrise from behind the snowy Mont Buet. Would you still leave your bed?
Outside we have four terraces in the predominantly flat garden. A terrace on the east side with a barbecue hut. Summer and winter a must to use. When you return from skiing or an adventurous hike, then this is the place to be to socialize around the fire while enjoying a snack and a drink. Together ( easily 12 people) you can naturally also barbecue and cheese fondue here, though the butcher thinks you’re weird when you order barbecue meat if it’s -5 Celsius outside. The terrace has space enough for outside dining under pleasant weather conditions.
Against the edge of the garden, on the south, you could find the terrace with Jacuzzi. Bubbling, you can enjoy the beautiful view over the valley. Where to find such a luxury.
In front of the chalet, facing south, is a terrace which is also accessible through the double doors of the guesthouse.
The last terrace is next to the kitchen of the guesthouse. The location to see the sunrise and warm you at the first rays of sunshine. In summer, when the sun is high, it’s a lovely cool spot in the shade while still enjoying the view.
There are four parking places on the terrain and under the roof adjacent of the chalet. Under this adjacent roof is also a storage with ski boot warmers for 12 pair of boots. The snow plough comes at least ones a day.
We will be happy to welcome you in our chalet.

Guestbook comments from the owner
We’ve had a very good time these days and also because of your chalet. Wednesday we made a hike to the cirque (Six Flags) how Simon called it! Friday we’ve visited the Aquille du Midi and made a walk around Monte Vers and took the train back to Chamonix. A long day, beautiful photo’s and very nice weather. It was really impressive. Thursday and Saturday we lounged a bit, reading books and bubbling in the tub. Tuesday we’ve visited Annecy with its beautiful lakeside. Unfortunately Sunday and Monday the weather was a little less beautiful, but no problem: we have delicious cooked in the very well occupied kitchen. For all these good things you’ll find a bottle rosé wine and we hope to see you once again.
Love, Simon and Eveline
I am the father of two boys and married with Loes . Almost all my life I 've worked as an entrepreneur in the food . Customer satisfaction has always been the foundation of my thinking . Not so hard , I 'm also a client , so you know what you like and not .
In 2008 we bought the ruins and two years later I have sold all the stores to concentrate myself totally on the rebuilt of the chalet. I lived in a small caravan without toilet and shower for two years. Bundles of stories I can write of all my experiences. Usually I arrived on Monday by plane and I went Friday night, back to Amsterdam . Before I started I spoke no two words of French . I knew what I wanted , but how to translate that at the workplace and then also in French . The work is done, my dream has come true. I am very proud of what we've achieved and hope the guests enjoy equally as we have already done.
Every year the holidays in the mountains was a true revelation. Netherlands is flat and the contrast in nature and culture immensely. The dream of having our own place in the mountains became stronger. After the many valleys we had seen, we concluded that the Vallée du Giffre it had to be. When we saw the ruins, the spot and the view, we looked at each other and we knew that this was going to be.
People who have seen the chalet, they all say that you can feel that it is built with the soul. Even a school class has come to look at that crazy Dutchman who has put a tree in his house.
