Casa Cowee, a rustic recently renovated island-style home on a lush private 1 acre estate, nestled in the warm, friendly community of Sandy Bay, offers dramatic million dollar views of the Caribbean and richly varied living spaces – a spacious Main House with master bedroom with new king bed and loft with queen bed or two single bed and large covered Sunset Deck where friends meet for breakfast and evening cocktails. This unique beachfront plus rain forest property is just a short drive to West End Village for dining, shopping and great evening entertainment. On Roatan fun is had by all residents and tourists alike.

The original owners Miss Marcia and her husband were on a road trip in the 70's that took them from their Aspen home down through the rugged backroads of Central America, they discovered the lovely island of Roatan.

Captivated by its lush tropical foliage on a hilly terrain and , crystal clear waters – the friendly, generous spirit of the locals – they bought a pristine property down the beach from what was then the only major dive operation on the island – Anthony's Key Resort.

That’s how the history of “Casa Cowee” was written. Miss Marcia passed the property on to her family and last year I visited and fell under it's spell. I am a Canadian from southern Ontario and fell in love with the Isle of Roatan, especially warm and natural Sandy Bay. You are part of a community here not a resort. So the next chapter in the history of Casa Cowee has begun. I know you will fall under it's spell also. Now that I have spent a good portion of a year here I know that Casa Cowee is totally unique. It is so easy to meet people, not just expats but islanders. I now have two guests who are back on the island with their families for extended stays so their kids get exposure to the real world outside of the bubble most of us live in. The kids are loving it with all their new friends, being part of the island community.

Suzanne Boyce purchased this house in 2013

There is no better place on Sandy Bay for 180 degree vista of the breathtaking waters and reef and dolphins. You are high off the beach giving you total privacy and the deck is the most popular spot for the sunset happy hours. You also have one acre of lush property surrounding you for privacy and lots of fruit trees such as lemon, lime, bananas, coconut, jack fruit, mango etc. Sandy Bay is a large area. But Casa Cowee is located on a sleepy stretch of sand that includes Anthony's Key, Myoka Lodge, the Blue Bahia and Tranquil Seas mini dive resorts. They are just a couple of minutes walk down the beach and all have restaurants and bars. So no need to go further than our own little friendly community. But if there is a need to step it up a pace the West End is just a 10 min. taxi ride away. This is a dive hub along with, great restaurants, bars and night clubs. The nice thing about Roatan is that everyone on the island parties together, so a great island experience.

What Casa Cowee is – and is not ...

Casa Cowee is not a 'plug and play' unit in a gated community. It is our cherished family home, designed by a renowned local architect who was a dear friend of the original owners – and who put his passion for the island into every facet of Casa Cowee’s signature design.

One of the great beauties of Roatan and the Sandy Bay location is during the 'low' season you enjoy reduced rates but are there during their flowering and fruit season. We have a multitude of fruit trees on our property you can enjoy. I found that the weather is great and the temperature the same year round. Sandy Bay is a residential area so the same action year round. Much unlike the tourist areas of West Bay and West End.

My husband, son (who is 21) and I stayed at Casa Cowee for one week the end of March. Our vacation was truly relaxing. The house is surrounded by beautiful lush gardens that are lovingly looked after by the gardener, James. The house has a wrap around deck that provides you with either gorgeous views of the turquoise ocean or the beautiful flowers and trees that flourish in this warm climate. The house itself is a beach house---rustic but quite comfortable. The sitting area is wide and open--most of the time there is a nice breeze blowing off the ocean; you can hear the palm trees rustling in the wind and the waves breaking on the beach---occasionally you can hear the dolphins calling out from Anthony's Key Resort, which is not too far away from the house. While we stayed at the house we became PADI Open Water Certified for diving at the Octopus Dive Center, located at the Blue Bahia Resort, which is a two minute walk down the beach from Casa Cowee. It was super convenient to be able to wake up, eat breakfast and then have a short stroll down the beach for our classes. The reefs are breath taking--I highly recommend doing at least one dive while you are in Roatan. I mustn't forget to mention the sunsets from the deck---they are spectacular---just beautiful! We are already planning our next trip back to Casa Cowee for next year!
Owner's Response: I think you captured Casa Cowee in your wonderful description. It makes me miss it so much. You were wonderful guests to have according to James and Johnny and settled in like the house and Roatan were home. I am happy you enjoyed our sleepy Sandy Bay to the fullest. Roatanian life seems to put everything into perspective. Not everything works like clockwork and you Learn that you don't have to either. I knew your son would love the adventure of it especially the diving and snorkelling. I am glad you are planning on coming back.
All the best

We stayed at Casa Cowee from March 8th to the 15th… great place and magnificent views that would leave you speechless. Johnny the caretaker was great and helped us with everything we needed day or night. Mia the guard dog was great too… friendly and fun. We even got a visit from the owner of the property (Suzanne) who was very nice. I would highly recommend this property if you visit Roatan.

Owner's Response: Hi Orren, Sorry I did not pick your review up. It was super to actually meet you after the long run up to your vacation. We were so happy you enjoyed the location so much. It was hard to be there and not staying at Casa Cowee. I have to agree nothing really compares and you and your party certainly made use of all Roatan had to offer. Hope to see you again in the future. I know Johnny and James loved having you there.
Thanks again

Relaxing Rustic

I am reviewing the Tree House. Six of us where there for two weeks - two of us in the Tree House. The other four had the main house.

The Tree House is rustic and charming. The queen size bed and bedding were great - nice and comfy. We had issues with biting bugs (either mosquitos, noseeums or spiders not quite sure as we didn't see them just their results) in the bedroom at night even though I had the A/C on, coils going and sprayed the bed spread with bug spray. It would be great if there was a bug net. Hot water - had no issues at all which was great - lots of hot.
The rest of the place is fine. The photos of the tree house I believe are accurate.

Wifi - works fine but it does hang up so you just need to unplug the router for a moment and plug it back in.

Excellent location to the beach and the snorkelling is fine right out front. It is great the property is so close is AKR as you can kayak over and check out the dolphins.

Johnny (caretaker) and James (gardener) are excellent. They were very helpful and had great ideas for restaurants, etc. They even took me out to harvest coconuts so we could make drinks with it. That was so great! Thanks you two!

We had no noise issues here - no roosters thank god! Maya, Johnny's dog is great and it was nice to have a four legged companion as I was missing my dog. Bring dog biscuits if you go as they do not sell them there.

I would recommend this property only if you booked the whole place or the owner was in the main house. If the main house was rented to party animals noise would be an issue as both the tree and main house are close together.

We did not rent a car the first week but did the second week. The first week was fine as the veggie truck drives right by and there are nice restaurants around. We also stocked up on groceries before we got to the property. Go to PlazaMar for groceries - more choices and better prices than Eldon's. PlazaMar is behind Eldon's. Next time I would book a car for the whole time. Taxi charges can add up.

The owner should update her listing as needed as boat was broken when we were there which was disappointing.

We had a relaxing two weeks there so all was well.

Owner's Response: Hi Leanne,
Thanks so much for taking the time for the review and so happy you enjoyed the Casa Cowee property. I am sorry about the bugs at night I thought it was only the first night. I am having the guys put up the netting immediately as we do have it and it should have been done. I have never had that problem before so live and learn. I found on my arrival the boat has condensation in the gas tank due to lack of use so have taken it off the listing. Thanks. There are lots of boats to take you anywhere there and as you found out Johnny can arrange anything.
I appreciate you mentioning the possibility of having rowdies as tenants. So far all our tenants have been attracted to the houses because it is a quiet spot and I do screen everyone. I would say the West End is more of an attraction for people in the party mode and Casa Cowee attracts hammock lovers who have the financial resources to stay on a great property.
It was great to have the opportunity to meet you and your friends. Johnny and James said you were GREAT and fun guests so we are hoping to have you back in the future.
Cheers
Suzanne

Casa Cowee is perfect for those who want to get away from the city and enjoy island of Roatan without all the bells and whistles of a fancy hotel. It's nice to be able to come home and cook a quick meal or take a quick taxi ride to a nice restaurant instead of being stuck at a hotel compound. Great, comfortable rooms, functional kitchen, amazing deck with sunset views and a short walk down to great scuba diving, along with all the other adventures one can have in Roatan. It's like having a great cottage all to yourself. lf you want privacy, independence, and a great view this is the place.

Ah....so much to say about this incredible place. Johnny the caretaker met us at the airport, I liked him immediately, very warm and friendly. James his co-hort was a lovely young man as well. They took excellent care of us, available for questions and any needs we might have. Upon arrival I was pleasantly surprised by the main house, the temple tree house (where our friends stayed), the grounds were beautifully kept. I was wondering about the place, the description of "rustic" made me wonder but Casa Cowee exceeded my expectations. It felt like a large beach bungalow a little worn by the humidity but lovely none the less. I loved the beautiful new floors and the open spacious of the place. Beautiful décor. The bed is very comfortable and the kitchen is fully supplied with every utensil you could need. The view from the main deck was amazing. We spent so much time out there. It is right next door to Anthony's Key Resort. Before the trip I was concerned that we would be too close to a resort but it is pleasant distance removed. We could watch the dolphins from the deck and I often kayaked to watch them up close (we did participate in the Active Dolphin Encounter). Great snorkeling right in front the house. BTW: they have great snorkel equipment at the Casa. It was so fabulous just hanging out at the house, we didn't do everything we planned on. AH: as I write I wish I was still there. The internet wound up not working at the house: I loved this: it was wonderful to disconnect. The restaurant Blue Bahia which was a short walk on the beach had internet, so if we really needed it we just went there. Great restaurant BTW. We had breakfast lunch and dinner there often. We loved the Splash Inn for lobster in the Westend. We had dinner one time at Anthony's Keys: the food was unimpressive but the view and the resort itself stunning. We had our last meal at Frangipani: this was incredible!! What a place, our best meal on the island, what astounding beauty. It was our most expensive dinner but still less then a mediocre dinner in Juneau, Alaska ( we are not known for fine dining). We did go to Little French Key for the day: that was amazing but you must time it for a day when the cruise ships are not in. We managed to avoid the cruise ships on the whole. Ah and last but not least: visit the Roatan Rum Factory: they make the most amazing hot sauce, wish we bought more. I have been on line trying out how to get more of their Passionate Papaya Hot Sauce.

Location

Car: not necessary

Great snorkelling and diving trips with the Octupus and Tranquil Seas dive operations just a 2 min walk down the beach. Stunning sites on the second largest coral reef in the world. There are two single kayaks and snorkelling equipment included in your rental. Some of the best bonefishing in the Caribbean is right down the beach from Casa Cowee and deep sea fishing. Our local fisherman Herbie has agreed to take care of our guests fishing trips. All you have to do is go down to our dock.

There are four restaurants 1-2 minutes walk down the beach and two bars and many delicious local food restaurants. Our property manager can arrange meals to be brought in. There is a full medical clinic in a one minute walk including a recompression chamber. There is a sail boarding business two minutes down the beach.

Casual West End a 10 minute taxi ride away is loaded with restaurants, bars and shops. West Bay is the big beach with the large resorts and condos. Great for a visit if you want to people watch, parasail or just a change from tranquil Sandy Bay.
