About Suzanne Boyce

The original owners Miss Marcia and her husband were on a road trip in the 70's that took them from their Aspen home down through the rugged backroads of Central America, they discovered the lovely island of Roatan.

Captivated by its lush tropical foliage on a hilly terrain and , crystal clear waters – the friendly, generous spirit of the locals – they bought a pristine property down the beach from what was then the only major dive operation on the island – Anthony's Key Resort.

That’s how the history of “Casa Cowee” was written. Miss Marcia passed the property on to her family and last year I visited and fell under it's spell. I am a Canadian from southern Ontario and fell in love with the Isle of Roatan, especially warm and natural Sandy Bay. You are part of a community here not a resort. So the next chapter in the history of Casa Cowee has begun. I know you will fall under it's spell also. Now that I have spent a good portion of a year here I know that Casa Cowee is totally unique. It is so easy to meet people, not just expats but islanders. I now have two guests who are back on the island with their families for extended stays so their kids get exposure to the real world outside of the bubble most of us live in. The kids are loving it with all their new friends, being part of the island community.

Suzanne Boyce purchased this house in 2013

Why Suzanne Boyce chose Roatan

There is no better place on Sandy Bay proper for 180 degree vista of the breathtaking waters and reef and dolphins. You are high off the beach giving you total privacy and the deck is the most popular spot for the sunset happy hours. You also have one acre of lush property surrounding you for privacy and lots of fruit trees such as lemon, lime, bananas, coconut, jack fruit, mango etc. Sandy Bay is a large area. But Casa Cowee is located on a sleepy stretch of sand that includes Anthony's Key, Myoka Lodge, the Blue Bahia and Tranquil Seas mini dive resorts. They are just a couple of minutes walk down the beach and all have restaurants and bars. Then for that special evening The Myoka Lodge on our beach also has a stunning bar and great food for happy hours and views over their infinity pool. So no need to go further than our own little friendly community. But if there is a need to step it up a pace the West End is just a 10 min. taxi ride away. This is a dive hub along with, great restaurants, bars and night clubs. The nice thing about Roatan is that everyone on the island parties together, so a great island experience.

What makes this house unique

What Casa Cowee is – and is not ...

Casa Cowee is not a 'plug and play' unit in a gated community. It is our cherished family home, designed by a renowned local architect who was a dear friend of the original owners – and who put his passion for the island into every facet of Casa Cowee’s signature design.

One of the great beauties of Roatan and the Sandy Bay location is during the 'low' season you enjoy reduced rates but are there during their flowering and fruit season. We have a multitude of fruit trees on our property you can enjoy. I found that the weather is great and the temperature the same year round. Sandy Bay is a residential area so the same action year round. Much unlike the tourist areas of West Bay and West End.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I wanted to let you know what a terrific time we had. Your house is wonderful and Iris and Marvin are awesome … We only made it as far as Punta Gorda going east, but went to The Hole in the Wall (really neat) and did the Pig Roast at Bay Islands Beach Resort. Also enjoyed the Butterfly Garden, Botanical Gardens and Iguana Farm. The snorkeling in Roatan was the BEST I have ever experienced!! Thanks so much for letting us share your paradise.

Casa Cowee, Roatan

  • 4 out of 5
Casa Cowee is a gorgeous property, right on the water, with unbeatable views from spectacular decks. The house is spacious, comfortable, airy, and well supplied. Spent more time on the property than at any house on other islands I have visited.

Suzanne could not be more helpful, nor could the various Jims and Johnnys who she employs. Octopus Divers just steps down the beach are the most accommodating people anywhere - 5-stars for sure - whether you snorkel or dive, or both.

Some advice, much of which Suzanne offers herself.

1. Power will go out during your stay as will Internet. This is a fact of Roatan life.

2. You will meet critters in the house, crawling and flying, large and small. But spray is required day and night. Not sure netting on the beds would help vs crawlies. Ants are fierce, so keep food sealed. Bring ziplocks in all sizes. It is in a rainforest, so fact of life, though I imagine as she continues with the substantial upgrades ways will be found to mitigate. I think it would help if better storage options were provided, as using the stove and microwave to store dry foods was inconvenient and not entirely effective.

3. Sandy Bay is in a quiet, in the sense of less commercial, part of the island. But this is a residential area. There will be noise late AND early. There is a rooster with no sense of time, locals who like their music loud, and trucks that drive on the beach (immediately below) to service businesses who also enjoy and advertise with their music. You want the windows open for the breeze but need earplugs vs noise.

The reef just in front of the property is beautiful and an easy snorkel. Use Octopus if you wish to view from outside the breaker, as attempting on your own will damage the dwindling reefs. Although technically a park, Roatan's reefs are taking a beating from cruise ship snorklers, etc. please be responsible!

We rented a car, as we like to explore islands we visit. If you go to dive every day, then it is not necessary.

There is a supermarket 15min away, and another just opening a tad further. Both have familiar goods and special needs sections (organize, GF, etc).

The 4 is strictly because of in-house bugs and area noise. These are things Suzanne has little control over. Again - she gets a 5, as do Jim and James, and everyone else we met and worked with.

Enjoy!

This is a gorgeous property, and Suzanne could not be more helpful! Sandy Bay is a quieter part of the island, in the sense of being less commercially bustling. The views from the house and deck are outstanding, the breeze negates the need for a/c, the staff she has are extremely helpful. The Octopus Dive folks are top-notch whether you wish to dive or snorkel....5 stars for them for sure!

The interior space could not be more welcoming or comfortable. We spent more time on this property than on others we have rented elsewhere in the Caribbean, in part because it is so nice.

You need to understand, as Suzanne explains, that the power will intermittently go out, the Internet can freeze, etc. This is a Roatan fact of life.

You need to apply bug spray/lotion every morning and evening. You will find guests in the house, whether crawling or flying. The house is not, nor should it be, hermetically sealed. I do imagine over time, as the substantial upgrades continue under her ownership, that measures will be taken to ease this but it will never go away in the rain-forest environment the house enjoys.

Also: bring earplugs! Local residents enjoy LATE and EARLY hours. Trucks drive along the beach (directly below the house) to service businesses with petrol, etc, and the drivers like their music. Plus, the local roosters can't tell time, it seems. So, you want windows open for the breeze but this wins you some noise. Prepare, and all will be well. This advice goes for any house vacation rental, by the way. At Casa Cowee, you do not have a silent neighborhood, so prepare.

We rented a car for convenience. I recommend this but we like to explore the islands we visit. No need though if you go to Roatan only to dive every day.

Supermarket is good and close, as is a brand new one opening as we were leaving. Both stocked with recognizable brands and special needs products (GF, etc).

A great value especially if you go with another couple (we did not).

The two 4-ratings are for critters and noise....both are largely out of the owner's control.

If there were ratings for owner I would give 5-stars, same for the various Jims and Johnnies who care for the property! We had a great stay. Thanks!!

Owner's Response: Thanks Joel for the time you took to review your week stay over Christmas. Hope you enjoyed the cute traditional deers made by the locals. We had such fun lighting them up. It was so nice to meet you when you were there! It gave me a chance to make sure you knew the happenings at Christmas on Roatan. My first stay, two years ago was during the same time and the following 5 weeks. I was not aware that at Christmas (it is a religious holiday there) they love their fireworks, schools are closed and many holidays are at that time which does increase activity and it is also the week the heat seekers from the north invade the island both by air and sea. After New Years it settles down again though.
Thanks for saying that I did inform you in advance about the noseeums and the attention to spraying yourselves to prevent their annoying bites as no one told me and I could not for the life of me figure out when I was being bitten so I think it better to tell guests so their stay is a comfortable one. They are not the same as in Florida thank goodness.
Thanks also for mentioning some of the improvements we have been working on as the property and houses are truly stunning but were in need of many upgrades which we have been steadily working on between guests and are almost finished. When I was there two years ago I rented solo but you are right a better bargain with 4 people by far! The Temple Tree House is good for the budget traveller.
Also you lead me into mentioning the new Casa Cowee queen bedroom being built with bedroom, living, separate bath and private deck to accommodate two couples who want separate living areas and baths.
All new wiring and sofa and exterior lighting for the beach and property were done before your arrival so thanks for acknowledging the ongoing improvements.
Roosters I love and you can hear them at a distance on the island and I think I know which one you are talking about who is a good distance away but a light sleeper will hear the cock crow at a what, 4 am? Then he goes back to sleep LOL. I think it fair that anyone that is a light sleeper may want to use ear plugs. I don't as I love waking up to the tropical birds at sunrise and lying there in a true tropical paradise.
Thanks also for mentioning the reef and the care needed when snorkelling. It is the second largest reef in the world and they are being battered by waste in the oceans especially from the cruise ships but every little bit helps.
Cheers, Suzanne

Very nice place to stay in Roatan

We had a very nice stay at Casa Cowee. The house is very comfortable with amazing views. We enjoyed sunset each evening on the patio, had a great time snorkeling from the dock and watching the daily dolphin shows.

Owner's Response: Hi Angela, Just down here now for over two weeks. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. If you come down again you will find many changes! We are adding a new full suite with bath to the house as we speak and have redone all the electrical and added much needed night lighting to the houses. We have also changed management. Johnny is moving on to higher and better. We have a great new experienced man Jimbo who will be a great credit to the property I am sure.
Have a great Christmas,
Suzanne

Amazing Views

  • 4 out of 5
Views are spectacular, even from the back, as owners have allowed beautiful tropical plants and flowers to grow right up to the house. Wonderful breezes from every direction with all windows screened, and ceiling fans for when it's calm. Too hot? Walk to the end of the dock and fall in.
Did not rent a car...don't really need one. Restaurants, dolphins, and dive shops 5 min. walk. Johnny or James can take you anywhere, get you anything, and with either or both present we NEVER felt unsafe at any time. Take a water taxi for a fun ride...they'll take you right to the dock, or pick you up there. Great place to meet the locals and steer clear of heavy tourist traffic. James gave us a couple recipes, fun island cooking lessons, and a birthday party.
Rising early one morning, we witnessed the most unexpected and spectacular tangerine sunrise either myself or my wife had ever seen.
Credit cards work many places, but you need cash for miscellaneous items/services and especially for tips, which are much appreciated as wages are quite low. An ATM card is a must if you prefer to carry smaller amounts of cash. Turn in any leftover Lempira at the Airport to cover your exit fees.
Should we return to Roatan, we would check first to see if Casa Cowee was available.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the great review Gregg. So glad you loved Casa Cowee. I am heading down there in a few weeks and can't wait to check out that sunrise. Usually just lie in bed with the sun rising listening to the stunning birds and enjoying the breeze but will make an effort to get up now LOL.
Johnny and James will love your kind words as they really try hard to make sure you have a great stay. They did say they were having a great time with you and your wife. We would like to see you back next year!
Cheers,
Suzanne
PS. Thanks for the scoop on tips etc. Many people do not realize how low the pay is, even with the expats on the island so tips are their life line.

One of a Kind

  • 5 out of 5
My husband and I and 2 daughters (10 & 13) stayed for a week. It was a varied and adventurous experience. We chose Casa Cowee to see more of the real island and culture, rather than a resort, and it provided what we wanted with security and comfort. While it was our 1st visit, I’d be surprised to find another property on the island as unique, exotic and full of beautiful views. It’s an older, spacious island home with lots of character. It was very clean and comfortable, especially the king-size bed. We didn’t spend much time inside, as the amenity that attracted us and proved to be as good as anticipated was the location-the unique home perched above the beach with the long dock. We jumped off the dock and were halfway to the reef. The water is as amazing as it looks in pictures and has abundant sea life. You don’t need to swim to the full reef to see plentiful fish and other creatures. If you’re brave enough to go outside the reef, it gets even better. We swam mostly inside it, but kayaks are easily tied to the dive buoys if you go out between the 2 Keys. It isn’t a completely secluded location and locals do use the dock, but you get the sense of seclusion at times with your height above the beach and gorgeous views. Anthony’s Key is just a short walk. As a family we snorkeled with the dolphins and our youngest also did “trainer for a day”–and I watched her at times from our deck! One of the best features is the expansive deck. Relaxing above the beach whether starting the day with café oro, reading in a hammock, or ending the day with a drink, the deck was the perfect spot for our whole family. There’s always an ocean breeze and you can watch the colors of the water change as the sun moves across the sky. We never needed A/C as the breeze was strong and the fans were more than adequate. The foliage was stunning with flowers everywhere and even fruit, and there’s also fauna: lizards, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, butterflies, tarantula, crabs and more. We walked through the local neighborhood to catch taxis and shop at the local tiendas and saw more of the real Roatan. Many people, transplants and locals, were nice and happy to share info. Jonny, the property manager, was helpful and interesting, as was James, the gardener. Down the beach there are two restaurants we enjoyed (Blue Bahia and Tranquil Seas). We did a dive with Octopus Divers and it was a great experience, as was their divers’ lunch. There’s so much to do nearby. One week isn't long enough.

Owner's Response: Hi Sandra,
You painted such a wonderful picture of Casa Cowee and it's surroundings. We are all so happy that your stay was up to your expectations and more. It is just like a dream to me. Next trip I am going to do just what you did. Relax and have fun.
The guys would love it if you were to return. Many families do.

Location

Car: not necessary

Great snorkelling and diving trips with the Octupus and Tranquil Seas dive operations just a 2 min walk down the beach. Stunning sites on the second largest coral reef in the world. There are two single kayaks and snorkelling equipment included in your rental. Some of the best bonefishing in the Caribbean is right down the beach from Casa Cowee and deep sea fishing. Our local fisherman Herbie has agreed to take care of our guests fishing trips. All you have to do is go down to our dock.

There are four restaurants 1-2 minutes walk down the beach and two bars and many delicious local food restaurants. Our property manager can arrange meals to be brought in. There is a full medical clinic in a one minute walk including a recompression chamber. There is a sail boarding business two minutes down the beach.

Casual West End a 10 minute taxi ride away is loaded with restaurants, bars and shops. West Bay is the big beach with the large resorts and condos. Great for a visit if you want to people watch, parasail or just a change from tranquil Sandy Bay.
