Overview

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday bungalow in Olhao

Two Bedroomed House, courtyard, roof Terrace, Close To Market White Sandy Beaches

With original features, including tiled floors ,domed ceilings and panelled doors this moorish influenced townhouse has been sympathetically and artfully, restored , furnished with authentic portugese antiques, it really gives the visitor a sense of character and individuality.

The house is bijoux!

On entering the property there is a parlour , with sofa bed seating and a wood burning stove, this leads to a long elegant hallway , from this are two double bedrooms .There is a well equipped kitchen, with brand new gas hob and electric cooker. There is a utility room with washing machine. The bathroom serves as a wet room with a large shower w/c, sink and bidet. All appliances are new as renovation has just been completed.

Leading from the kitchen is a small courtyard, focal point -a mosaic fountain, there is bench seating and a table. The courtyard has been planted with lemon tree as well as climbing plants and provides a nice area for morning coffee or a shaded area from the hot sun late afternoon.

Leading from the courtyard are steps that take you to the shaded hammock area (a good spot to read). Here there is also access to the washing line, (hang the beach towels up).

A couple of steps up and we have a large roof terrace. The whole area of the house, it is private and provides a dining area, open shower area, a campaign style kitchen, bbq area a shaded area where there is a daybed as well as bench seating amongst floral planters. The terrace is fabulous, be it in morning or stargazing in the middle of the night.

About Fiona Gray

Hi my name is Fiona. I work in the Antiques business and have a passion for beautiful architecture and objects, hence buying and restoring this gem of a house in Olhao. I live in Devon in the Uk.I like to work hard, but also enjoy my time off. I have several Artist friends in Olhao and like to get out to the house as much as possible. When asked prior to completing the purchase of the house , why? My only answer was.... Because the tomatoes taste better! It's true everything tastes better and the climate is just fantastic. I grew up in Cornwall ,daughter to an eccentric Antique dealer father, who sadly passed away 3 years ago, with what he left me I put towards number 8, something to enjoy for a very long time. After your visit I really hope you enjoy it as much as I do!!

Fiona Gray purchased this bungalow in 2013

Why Fiona Gray chose Olhao

I was sort of daydreaming a few years before I bought this house , what if ? When I inherited a little money! it became more of a reality! I started looking in Olhao, as I'd met some colourful and interesting people here.

I came across this house almost by accident, but fell in love with its quirky eccentricity's. It reminded me of an artists box of paints! The rest is history!

Also the great thing is travelling to it ,is so easy, just 20 minutes for me this end and a 15 minute taxi ride Faro side - simple.

What makes this bungalow unique

I love this house because it is like a hidden gem. I love the colours the joy and love that the previous owners obviously had for it - it is my own Gauguin painting. Xx

Olhao is a gem of a town. It has not been over commercialised, which is one of the reasons I was attracted to the place. Situated on the Ria Formosa river delta with its Tidal lagoon and out lying unspoilt islands a perfect situation for a sheltered fishing port. Historically Olhaos main industry has been Fish ,with strong trade links with Brazil, the hangover from the booming trade days is evident in the faded Grandeur of the crumbling architecture- some call it 'Little Havana'.

There is a Marina that overlooks the lagoon,to which there is the view to the outlying islands,(Kulatra, Armona and Farol )there is nothing more pleasurable than sitting with G&T in hand listening to live jazz on the waters edge whilst watching the sun go down.Just a short walk from here is the pontoon where one catches the sweet little ferry that will transport you to either of the islands.

What's is so nice about spending the day on the islands beaches is one can have a choice of water conditions, you can choose to base yourself on the lagoon side( reminiscent of the Carribean , still blue blue waters) or a short walk across the island and the Atlantic ocean with waves and kilometres of unspoilt white sandy beaches. Its always a pleasure to sit in one of the bars whilst waiting for the return ferry, enjoying a coffee or sangria whist watching the slow pace of island life .

Olhao itself has the largest Fish and produce market along the Algarve and Saturdays, we see the sea front transformed into a vibrant and colourful scene. Farmers come from near and far to sell their organic produce, fresh cut flowers, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, you name it, it's here! I like to get up whilst it is still cool and buzz off down the market with my shopping trolley( ssshhhh don't tell my friends) and gather the weeks shopping for all the picnics and BarBQ' s for the following week.

Olhao has not been spoilt by tourism, it seems to have been left behind, which to me is fabulous as it really is authentically Portuguese . If you are looking for 5 star destination then it's not for you. If you are looking for character, an artistic buzz ,fabulous architecture, fresh food, fresh air then it's your place.

It is not necessary to have a car here as everything is within reach and the house has two bikes that our guests are welcome to use, the area is pretty flat so cycling is easy! It's a nice bike ride, to the nature reserve, where one can see the natural flora and fauna in an unspoilt setting, birding is particularly good, storks and flamingos are regularly seen here.

If one would like to travel further without hiring a car, the train station is a short walk from the house. The trains are air conditioned and run all the way along the Algarve coast! it's also a cheap way to travel. Alternatively there is a bus station where one can travel locally or even into Spain or up to Lisbon . Of course the other option is to hire a car, which gives more freedom, travelling according to ones own time table ,cars can be booked in advance and on line which is the cheaper option. There is street parking outside the house. It is worth baring in mind rates vary hugely according to the season, We hired one in November for £70 for the week, bargain!)
