From antiquity to beyond
From outside, it appears as a slightly atypical two-story SoCal cottage in a charming strip of Santa Monican suburbia – not every home is fortified by such a lushly tended front garden. But move beyond its heavy wooden threshold, and you will find yourself transported to a different place and time… rather, all places and all times. From its 1920s-era Spanish Colonial Revival foundation, to centuries-old fixtures and furnishings from beyond the sea, to contemporary aesthetic touches designed and constructed in the here and now, you will be floored by this home’s ability to simultaneously exhibit temporal and spatial flux while delighting you with its relaxingly idiosyncratic unity of theme, era, origin and palette.
Who’s watching the clock?
Your host is an accomplished interior decorator and home stylist. Between her travels collecting pieces, producing her own textiles and furniture, and spending her spare moments with her three sons, she more than most knows the value of every second.
And the rest is history
Every minute piece in this home has been hand-selected by your host. The living room seamlessly blends a stucco coved ceiling and terra cotta hearth with plush and tufted upholstered seating, all alongside focal pieces like an 18th century marquetry commode and a similarly-dated golden-framed Sicilian mirror. The kitchen’s open-shelf arrangement showcases chromatic pops from the ceramic flatware itself, leaving more room for the four-oven AGA cooker to send delectable aromas over the butcher-block-topped island and beyond. Every bedroom invites you to pore over the vibrant raspberries and paisleys, soothing greens and worn-in leather, rustic wood and an unforgettable pink claw-foot tub – each with a freshly-prepared bed at its centre to anchor you in dependable comfort. And the back garden, obscured by similarly-manicured greenery as the front, offers a secluded poolside paradise under a cloudless blue sky where the hours can quietly lapse.
