PRIVATE STRUCTURE. Built in the 16th century in the centre of the bay of San Terenzo as a Barnabite monastery, the villa owes its name to the famous poet Percy Bysshe Shelley who, describing it as the ' white house by the sea ', lived there in 1822 with his wife Mary Shelley, author of the famous book “Frankenstein”. Villa Shelley is an L-shaped building, in brick and finished in white-painted plaster which makes it recognizable from every part of the Gulf as its colour stands out among the rows of Genoese-style colourful houses that surround the beautiful promenade in San Terenzo. One feature that distinguishes the villa at first sight is the five-arched portico which contains the main entrance. Above the portico is a large terrace along the whole façade, overlooking the sea and the beach of San Terenzo, with a 180° panorama stretching from the castle of Lerici to San Terenzo and, on the horizon, to Portovenere with its characteristic church of San Pietro and the islands of Palmaria and Tino. Inside the villa are the original floors in beautiful Genoese grit and high vaulted ceilings; all the rooms of the piano nobile (the principal floor of a large house) have large windows giving a breathtaking view of the sea. PLEASE NOTE: In the upper floor, reached by an external flight of stairs, is an apartment for the exclusive use of the owners who may sometimes be present, complete privacy is however guaranteed to guests.
The main entrance, under the portico bounded by a beautiful iron railing, leads into an imposing, 3.9 mt high, large hall paved in classic Genoese black and white. From the hall a slate staircase leads up to the piano nobile and into a room of considerable size with two large windows and a French window facing the terrace which overlooks the sea. The grandeur of this room is accentuated by its 4.8 mt height. A number of doors open off this room: two bedrooms, a bathroom, a large kitchen and, past the staircase, another bedroom and another bathroom. From the main living room you go out to the large terrace, surrounded by a stone balustrade, overlooking the bay, the view of Lerici with its famous castle and the islands of the Golfo dei Poeti.. On the mezzanine floor is a laundry room. From the entrance hall you can get to an extra small apartment with a lounge and small kitchen on the ground floor and, on the mezzanine level, reached by an internal staircase, 2 small bedrooms and a little bathroom .
The villa has a beautiful private park of 1000 square meters, covered by grass with beautiful well-maintained paths and hedges at the sides to protect the privacy of its guests. There is beautiful, fully-equipped, outdoor dining area. In the upper part of the garden is a hanging terrace with an old waterfall, no longer working.
