A bend in the water

Just when you thought the hipster vibe was all angular haircuts, aged warehouses and achingly trendy boutiques, along comes Orsman Road. Everything about this Hoxton haven says cool, effortlessly – including the canal that sloshes its lazy way below your window. The colours are punchy, the textures playful, the floorboards splashed with sunlight. But the most beautiful scene must be the balcony. Here, as runners gasp and narrowboats glide, you can sit back with something lightly chilled. Or better yet, trot the towpaths and find that Shoreditch and Islington are as happening as ever.
