In association with Trinity House, Rural Retreats is pleased to present four refurbished former lighthouse keepers' cottages in North Devon. Bull Point Lighthouse is just outside of Mortehoe in North Devon and the site comprises four self catering cottages - Warden, Siren, Triton, and Sherrin. Mortehoe is a very pretty village with good pubs and restaurants, fish and chips, stores and delicatessen.

Places to visit include Woolacombe with its 'blue flag' sandy beach which is only a 10-minute drive from Bull Point. The perimeter of the site is fully fenced and gated but once outside this area, it is very dangerous for children staying at the holiday cottage. Strict supervision at all times is required, as not all guests will remember to keep the gate closed and locked.

This lighthouse does not have a fog signal. Country access roads to some of the lighthouse sites are narrow with limited passing places and, dependent on the season and site, there is the possibility of overhanging vegetation due to cutting restrictions during bird breeding seasons or other environmental reasons.

Guests should be aware that the lighthouses and equipment need regular and sometimes emergency maintenance. Therefore visits by maintenance staff may occur at any time during the year. However, staff will do their best to ensure guest privacy at all times.

Location

Location

There's so much to experience in Devon, from the open heathland of Dartmoor and Exmoor to beautiful unspoilt beaches and picturesque villages with thatched cottages with cob walls. From inspiring arts and culture, outdoor pursuits including golf, fishing and surfing, good walking, to touring the byways and enjoying cream teas and Devon 'scrumpy'!

In contrast there are the bustling cities of Devon's capital Exeter with its magnificent Norman cathedral and Roman walls, historic Plymouth famous for its pioneering voyages, and Elizabethan Totnes.

To help you plan your holiday with us, we've compiled some helpful pointers.

Places of Arts and Culture include museums such as the Dartmouth Museum, the North Devon Maritime Museum and Victorian School room at Appledore, the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon at Barnstaple. Morwellham Quay near Tavistock is a restored industrial site where you can sample Victorian village life.

Historic Houses and Gardens include Hartland Abbey near Bideford and Buckland Abbey near Yelverton, both former monasteries. Hartland is now a family home with gardens and woodland walks. Buckland is the former home of Drake and incorporates his memorabilia and the ruins of the abbey.

Arlington Court near Barnstaple has a fabulous collection of model ships, horse drawn vehicles and a lake. A la Ronde in Exmouth is a 16 sided house built in 1796.

The lavish Victorian Knighthayes Court and garden is near Tiverton. Also worth visiting are Cotehele House and gardens near St Dominick, Killerton House and Garden near Exeter and Tapeley Park House and gardens near Bideford. The RHS Rosemoor Gardens are at Great Torrington and Coleton Fishacre Garden and Greenway Historic Gardens are near Kingswear.

Devon's picturesque villages include Clovelly where you can enjoy a coastal walk in woodland along Hobby Drive, charming Appledore and the fishing village of Lynmouth connected by cliff railway to hill-top Lynton.

For trips you can visit Lundy Island by boat from either Bideford or Ilfracombe, or enjoy a steam train ride from Paignton to Dartmouth or Buckfastleigh to Totnes.

Bathing on the more sheltered southern coast beaches include East Portlemouth, Slapton, Blackpool sands, Hope Cove and Bigbury-on-sea and the surfing enthusiasts' favourites at Croyde and Woolacombe in the north.

There are rugged cliffs and good walking along the north coast. Braunton 'Great Field' is a lovely place to wander any-time of the year - a patchwork of fields, originated in Medieval times. The Tarka Trail cycling route is 180 miles in a figure of eight in the northern part of Devon based on Barnstaple. It passes through numerous towns including Barnstaple, Bideford, Torrington, Hatherleigh, Okehampton, Lynmouth and Ilfracombe. Lynmouth makes an excellent starting point for walks on the Exmoor moorlands.

Dartmoor is excellent walking, riding and climbing country. The wealth of wildlife here is staggering. This National Park is a mixture of different moods, from dramatic ravines and falls (Lydford Gorge or Becky Falls), to rolling moorland, rivers and clapper bridges (Dartmeet and Postbridge) and pretty postcard villages such as Buckland-in-the-Moor. Dartmoor in particular has many remains of pre-historic man especially around Bovey Tracey where there is also a Woodland Reserve.
