About Atlanterra and Zahara de los Atunes
The Atlanterra Bay, a singular and luxurious Beach resort with a number of spectacular estates, always set into big gardens in order to keep development to a sustainable level. The Bay offers very beautiful beaches and most of the year you will find that besides a few fishermen there is hardly anybody there. Looking up from the beach lies “LA SIERRA DE PLATA” a mountainous unspoilt area with no development at all and which has been declared nature reserve.
Zahara and Atlanterra lie at the southern most tip of Europe and have been spared from over development and mass tourism.
A former fishing village it is now a small tourist town known for it’s 15 km of wide and sandy beaches and of course for it’s thousands of years old tuna fishing tradition. Already during Phoenician times, tuna was trapped here in the “Almadrabas” the traditional labyrinth of fishing nets extending from the coast. To this day you can see the annual catching of the tuna during spring and early summer just off the beaches of Zahara. Gourmets from all over Spain come to Zahara to it’s yearly RUTA DEL ATUN during the month of May, when almost all the restaurants compete for the Prize of the best Tapa made with the local tuna.
The village has excellent restaurants where the local fish is being served in a variety of ways. Then, during summer there are many bars which open till 6 or 7 in the morning and the so-called “chiringuitos” (beach bars) often bring life acts during sunset and serve light meals through out the day.
During the summer months you can find basic shopping at about 10 minutes walk from el Peñon but only 5 minutes by car in Zahara the range of possibilities is a lot better.
Zahara has an excellent local fish and produce market, many little supermarkets, 2 bakeries, a pharmacy, several newspaper stands with international press, a number of boutiques and jewellery shops, a little crafts and arts fair during the month of August and a little first aid clinic that offers a basic medical service.
THINGS TO DO AND VISIT:
The ruins of the Castillo de la Almadraba built in the 15th century by the Duques of Medina Sidonia can still be seen in the village. Most visitors come here for the unspoilt coastline and the nature around Zahara, which invites to do all kinds of sports and recreational activities. If you love to walk on the beach then, if you are lucky enough, you might see dolphins or whales swim along the shore.
The whole area is characterized by en extraordinary biological diversity and is known as a bird watchers’ paradise, since it lies on the route of migratory birds on their way to Africa. Great hiking trails along the coast and horse-riding along the beach or in the forests invite the active tourist to explore the beauty of this area.
Mountain bikers and nature lovers alike should explore the well prepared trails through the nature reserves around Barbate (La Breña y Marisma) leading to el Tajo and to Facinas and the Parque de los Alcornocales further inland, where wild boar, Eagles and lots of other wildlife has found a safe heaven.
Make an excursion to Bolonia on foot or by car and visit the ancient Roman ruins there, go whale watching in Tarifa, or kite surfing. Also fishing and horse riding are popular attractions, Visit Cadiz one of Europe’s oldest cities or make a tour to some of Andalusia’s most beautiful white villages Arcos de la Frontera, Medina de la Frontera and of course Vejer de la Frontera only 15 minutes form Zahara. Or for a day out why not take a 35minute ferry across to Tangier to Morocco? Just over an hour away are Gibraltar or Jerez with airports and just a little further Sevilla and Malaga.
There are about 10 golf courses within a 60 minutes drive from Zahara. Best Known are Soto Grande and Novo Sancti Petri (both about 45 Minutes) but also Campano Golf and the Benalup Golf and Country club are very much liked. Last but not least the Monteenmedio Golf is a must for the more advanced Players.
