About Penny Hornsey

Our family, with 2 Golden Retrievers, moved to Steeple Ashton in 1976 and now we really can't imagine living anywhere else. In the past we had shops in Bath and Bradford on Avon selling early antique country furniture and offering interior design advice. Hence the antiques and co-ordinated interior at Coachmans Cottage.

Penny Hornsey purchased this cottage in 1986

Why Penny Hornsey chose Steeple Ashton

Coachmans Cottage was purchased in 1986 for my Grandmother. . She spent 6 very happy years living here. Now we would not want to part with the cottage next door, it is too much a part of our lives, and meeting all of the special guests that come to stay over the years is such an added bonus.

What makes this cottage unique

Coachmans Cottage is situated in the heart of this beautiful, award winning, conservation village, on a quiet lane just off the village green. The Longs Arms pub, serves good food. Pick up hot croissants for breakfast and a daily paper from the Award Winning village shop, both are only 100/200 metres away. St Marys Church is a short stroll in the opposite direction. The friendly villagers make visitors very welcome and as a past guest wrote in the Visitor Book 'like Midsummer without the murder'! For those who enjoy to walk the 'Friends of Steeple Ashton' have compiled a number of walks starting from St Marys church, ranging from 2 to 8 miles, copies are in the cottage for guests use.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a lovely week at Coachmans Cottage in April. It is an easy drive from Heathrow and a great place to recover from 8 hours jet lag after flying from western Canada! The cottage is peaceful, a short stroll from the shop and the pub, has nice walks from the door, and is perfectly located for visits to the many nearby gardens, cathedrals, and delightful villages. The cottage is very comfortable, clean, and well-equipped. Penny, the owner,is very helpful, and we were grateful for the delicious welcome tea. We're looking forward to another stay on our next visit to the UK!

Response: It was a great pleasure meeting you both and so pleased that all was well received, including the tea tray. We look forward to welcoming you back at a future date. Best, Penny

A dream home in the countryside

  • 5 out of 5
After visiting the city of London numerous times between 1972 and 2003 and then seemingly forgetting all about England for a complete decade, we were suddenly reminded of the fact that there is still a whole wonderful country left to explore, and so we looked for the best place to stay in southwest England. I think we found it! Coachmans Cottage is an ideal place to call temporary home if you want to experience the very real and enchanting English countryside, to see many of the places you might have heard of or seen on TV in an Agatha Christie mystery. Trust those pictures, Coachmans Cottage is really a dream come true that will make you feel so at home you'll wish you could stay for good. And you get your own private parking space, too! Penny and Peter are the kindest and most helpful hosts you can imagine. That Award is more than deserved. Steeple Ashton is a charming village about which a complete book has been written (available for reading in the cottage), and the local pub serves excellent food. And if you don't feel like eating out, you can cook up anything you want in the beautiful and well-equipped kitchen. I could go on for hours about all the lovely places we visited during our stay, but you oughta experience it yourselves! Highly recommended, naturally! Hope we can come back soon...

Lovely English countryside!

  • 5 out of 5
Our family had a wonderful stay at the Coachman's Cottage this past April. We are a family of four with 2 teenage sons. They were comfortable in their own bedroom, and we all easily shared the well equipped bathroom. The kitchen was cozy but had everything we needed, and we enjoyed breakfast and snacks in the cottage many times. The area is absolutely stunning countryside and easy to navigate by car. The pub is quaint and offers food that is not only standard pub fare-we thoroughly enjoyed our meals there. Penny was extremely accommodating-always ready to answer our questions, offer advice or give directions. She even organized a trip to the church to watch the bell ringing in the steeple-it was truly an amazing experience and a nice opportunity to meet the local villagers. When I hear church bells now it has a more meaningful sound to me and brings back good memories of our wonderful time there. It was very easy to take the train to Bath for the day and enjoy the lovely sights there. The other small trips we took were easily traveled by car. Our weather was perfect and we wished our stay had been longer. We have traveled extensively and lived in 6 different countries but our time spent in Steeple Ashton at Coachman's Cottage will always be remembered as a special experience. I highly suggest a visit.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review for "Coachmans". I especially enjoyed your description of our SMALL kitchen as "cosy"!.
It is the guests that makes owning a holiday cottage such fun and it was a pleasure meeting you all and I do hope that we will be welcoming you back to Steeple Ashton one day soon. Best Penny

The beautiful Georgian City of Bath for shopping, restaurants, theatre and the Thermae Spa, is only 12 miles away. Longleat House with the famous Safari Park. Bowood and Wilton Houses. World Heritage Sites of Stonehenge, and Avebury Circle. Cathedral City of Salisbury. The National Trust village Lacock, Harry Potter and many period dramas have been filmed here. Beautiful Gardens at Stourhead, Iford Manor, Malmesbury and The Courts. Quirky towns, Saxon Bradford on Avon, Devizes with a thriving market and a flight of locks on the Kennett and Avon canal and Marlborough. Pretty villages Castle Coombe and Biddestone. Small Manor Houses, Great Chalfield, Westwood and Sheldon, and so much more too numerous to mention....all an easy drive away.

NB Fabulous Autumn Colour at Stourhead and Westonbirt Arboretum.
