Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Richmond & Kew - Thorne Street

2 bedroom, 2 bathroom cottage in Barnes with the Thames at the end of the road

Thread count

Some homes were just made for snuggling. Thorne Street is as comfortable as a patchwork quilt, and as gorgeously pretty as an armful of roses. This is a true English country cottage, all wooden floors, original fireplaces and a garden that flits with bees and butterflies – and yet, somehow, you’re in London, with the Thames almost at the end of the road. Barnes is one of London’s sweetest villages, with a weekly farmers’ market, venerable pubs, and, just across the water, the ancient pastures of Duke’s Meadows. Get up early to watch the rowers working up a sweat on the water, feed the ducks, or zoom into town. But be sure to brace yourself, for after all this tranquillity, zone one may come as rather a shock to the system.

In stitches

Your hostess worked as a textile designer and you’ll see exquisite examples of her craft as well as antique textiles all around her home. After spending a number of years in the Far East she has returned to London, and is now learning Italian and regularly visiting Florence and Rome.

Fabric of life

Thorne Street has the most wonderful warmth, indeed, once inside you may never want to leave. The sitting room runs the whole length of the house, with views to the front, and out into the garden. Books are everywhere, and not only have you a soft grey sofa, facing into the old fireplace, but there’s also a useful writing desk. The walls are hung with tapestries and landscapes, and you’ll spy some tremendous antiques. The eat-in kitchen is that bit more modern, and doors open out onto the patio garden, perfect for al fresco eating. There are two bedrooms, the guest double - which can be set as a twin, and the master bedroom, in the subtlest duck egg blue. The pine bed is hand carved, there’s a wealth of bedtime reading, and on summer nights leave the window open, and let the garden’s evening breath lull you to sleep.

Loop the loop

You can, of course, spend your days tearing around central London, but we suggest you take time out for the altogether slower pace of your neighbourhood. Walk along the river, stopping only for an ice cream (or a pint), take a picnic to Duke’s Meadows or go for a jog around Barnes Common. Your local shops, cafes and restaurants are delightful, but, if you do fancy a bit of urban hurly burly, the journey from Barnes Bridge train station to Oxford Circus takes a little over half an hour.

What makes this house unique

Booking a stay is as easy as booking a hotel room, with online payment and confirmation. You get the same attention to detail and personal service too.

Every home is properly cleaned before and after you stay, beds made (we can even do hospital corners) and bathrooms kitted out with luxury toiletries. There’s a maid service if you want it, as well as other hotel-style amenities.

Once we’ve helped you settle in, we’re just a call away, 24/7. If it’s something we can’t solve over the phone, we’ll pop over to lend a hand.

And because nobody wants to be a tourist, our homes come with personal and unique recommendations from the people who live in them – places to eat, things to do and adventures to go on.
