TRAVEL BACK IN TIME AND BREATHE IN THE AMBIANCEof INDIAN and WESTERN cultures of this home on 5 private wooded acres but only one mile from the town of Custer. The cedar house has ceramic tile floors throughout, leather furniture, new kitchen appliances and LOTS of windows.
The main house sleeps 2 in the master bedroom, 2 in the attached 'western room' and 1 the large utility roo m. The guest quarters sleeps 2 in the main room and 2 in the the small bedroom.
The master bedroom is furnished in aspen log with a queen bed and master bath. A utility room off the kitchen sleeps 1 in a twin bed w/access to the main bathroom and its own entrance. The porch outside the utility room gives access to the 'western room' which has a full size bed with beautiful rock and cedar walls (western room is for warm weather months). We also have a pak'nplay and a high chair.
The guest quarters included with the rental, is setup like a studio apartment (minus a kitchen) but with a bathroom/shower. The main room has a queen size bed, sofa, tv/satellite. The second room has a full size bed a separate entrance and all the character of a cabin setting.
There are 4 covered porches the favorite and largest is partially enclosed with comfy wicker furniture. It's a favorite spot for morning coffee, watching thunderstorms or sipping cocktails in the evening. From any porch you can enjoy the view, peacefulness and wildlife. Relax with a family bbq or play a game of horseshoes in the meadow.
Custer is in an area known as the 'heart' of the hills and local attractions include Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Jewel and Wind Caves, the scenic Needles Highway. It is also 6 miles from Crazy Horse Mountain, several lakes and approximately 45 miles from historic Deadwood and the Rapid City airport. This area also attracts motorcyclists especially during the Sturgis motorcycle rally. We also welcome hunters for deer, elk and turkey season. In the fall Custer State Park hosts the famous Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival.

I live in Colorado
Mary Shepard purchased this cabin in 2005
I fell in love with the Black Hills after several trips to the Sturgis motorcycle rallies. The hills and rock formation are beautiful, peaceful and scenic with lots of history. I love the small town slow pace.
Most people can't decide if they should stay and hang out at the cabin or if they should go sight seeing or tour other area attractions. It is so relaxing you won't want to leave!!
Thanks for a great house. Everyone settled in for a great stay. The back porch was our favorite spot. Day and night. The kitchen suited our needs. Having a radio was a plus. The car port spared the bikes from a couple of downpours.
The location of the house was right in the center of the Park system, and the scenic drives were great. We would happily give a recomendation to any future rental requests that you might have.
Thanks, Polly Balland
The house and guest house are really cute. Guest house have garage odor smelly. Shower in main house isnt great (need new one). The dining table isnt family friendly because it has tiles on each part. But the house overall is CUTE really.. Just few things that can change to make it good-excellent :).
We loved our stay at this cabin! Lots of outdoor spaces to enjoy the deer wandering through the surrounding pine forest and the frogs singing in the pond across the little travelled dirt road. Cabin was clean and nicely furnished with little extras (like wifi and the baking pans and pantry staples to bake some chocolate treats!). Several comments here about the sleeping accomodations...they worked just fine for us. The extra bedrooms in the guesthouse and the western room looked very nice (although we didn't need them for our small family). Families with young children should be aware that both the guest house and western room are separate from the main house with separate entrances. Highly recommended for a peaceful retreat yet still very convenient to Custer and the State Park. Oh, and if you go...definitely pick up some bison meat at the market in Custer for burgers on the gas grill at the cabin. Yum!
All was peaceful, fun, and convenient.
The only recommendation was a new bed in the master bedroom.
The bed was extremely uncomfortable. Every move was greeted by a loud squeeking/grinding noise.
As much as we loved the place , it would keep us from returning as we slept terrible.
A new king bed would be fitting with the rest if the well taken care of property!
This home is beautiful. Very large open gathering space (kitchen/dining/living room) for our family of 6 to be together with lots of little cozy outdoor spots (porches, sunroom, etc.) to get away from each other and read! Master bedroom was gorgeous. Only downside being that other sleeping arrangements were less ideal. Guesthouse (converted garage) nice, but had a slight smell kind of like gasoline. Not terrible, but not great. Wish we were permitted to use the firepit. Overall, still 5 stars!
Our family of 5 enjoyed this spacious property in the woods outside of Custer. Very roomy and the fully equipped kitchen allowed us to prepare and eat most of our meals there. The wildlife show (deer & turkeys) was fun to watch as well. The property was very clean and the pictures in the VRBO add don't do it justice. I would highly recommend this property for parties of 5 or higher!
We certainly enjoyed our coffee on the deck in the morning and seeing all the wildlife. It is so peaceful!! However, it is just a couple miles from town so you can run down and get anything you have forgotten. I just can't say enough about the location and scenery at this cabin. Lots of outdoor seating too.
The only downside I could see was that I didn't really think it would be suitable for nine people. Maybe it would be okay if you had children, but you would be short on dishes, glasses and places to sit to eat unless you used the outside seating. Mary is gracious and delightful to work with, so I would suggest if you have a larger group, you give her a call and she can tell you how it would be doable.
Too bad the outside of the guest house still looks like a shed or garage, it is a little off-putting for people who have to stay in that building. Nonetheless a family could make it work.
I loved the location so much, and it is reasonably priced, so we would definitely use the cabin again in the future.
