So let me share with you a little about the uniqueness that is the Lower Mill Estate.

Why Tim Haywood - Property Manager chose Lower Mill Estate

Skylark Lodge is a unique holiday villa, situated on the prestigious Lower Mill Estate, the UK's first and as far as I am aware, only, residential nature reserve.

The estate is a real haven of peace and tranquillity and in my opinion, the perfect antidote to the stresses + demands of everyday life and forgive me for perhaps being presumptuous, but I do think you are going to absolutely love it!

What makes this house unique

The estate consists of over 550-acres of unspoilt countryside, with 8 beautiful lakes to explore. It is also pretty flat, which makes for some lovely walks & cycle routes.

All of our holiday homes are just a few minutes walk from the award winning onsite Luxury Spa facility, set at the very heart of the estate. The spa itself consists of a luxury slate lined (heated) indoor & outdoor pools, sauna, steam room and fully equipped gymnasium.

There is also the UK's only Eco_pool, a naturally filtered outdoor plunge pool, which is a total blast, if not a little on the cold side.

There is lots to do in the local area, as the estate is located at the very heart of the Cotswolds Water Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

“Stayed here for Xmas. This place is amazing. If it's a chilled out holiday that you are looking for, then you'll certainly have that here. Excellent place to go for walks then come back to relax in the hot tub. The only thing I would advise is that if you are going to use every bedroom then be sure to take a tv for each room and an aerial lead. Full freeview tv is available. There's only a tv in the lounge though also, I wouldn't purchase the wifi that is available. I did, but couldn't connect to it all week, waste of money. Didn't really miss it though, it was a nice change not to have it.Had one of the best Christmases ever here. Perfect place for quality time with the family. I imagine it would be excellent in the summer. Definitely hope to return some time soon.”

Average, not luxury with abysmal service

We rented Skylark Lodge for a week at the end of August. The company is marketing this property as 5* luxury with excellent service, yet it fell well short of that.
We expected to have ready on arrival a full set of linens, kitchen consumables and equipment, bathroom towels and an acceptable standard of cleanliness. There were no tea towels, oven gloves, washing up liquid, and dishwasher salt in the kitchen. A welcome pack would have also not gone amiss. There was an absence of decent cooking utensils including sharp knives and serving spoons. The cutting board was well worn, unhygienic and was therefore not used. The kettle was very badly lime-scaled and some pans were in poor condition.

Bathrooms had one hand towel per bathroom, which is inadequate for up to 11 people. There were no bath mats which are important for safety reasons and customer comfort. Mould was in evidence in at least one bathroom. There were no cleaning cloths and liquids suitable for wiping down surfaces either in cooking areas or for outside tables prior to use.

The seat cushions at the main dining table and on the outside areas were very grubby with old stains. There are what look like old hammocks dumped in a corner of two of the decks.

The gas barbecue paid for as an extra was not as advertised. We were given a small Weber kettle barbecue with charcoal. This is inadequate for cooking for the number of people at the property. It is not fit for the purpose described and we therefore did not use it.
When we arrived late Monday afternoon, we contacted the Guest Relations Manager who was absent from site. We made numerous text and phone calls to him and it took until Wednesday morning, to get most of the essentials. These came from another company as a favour.
This was an extremely poor start to our holiday, which we expected to be in 5* luxury. We gave up asking for anything else as it was too difficult and ruining our holiday. We did not see anyone from the Company during our stay.

The hot tub became murky and smelly despite being used only twice. The water was changed and rechlorinated. The appearance of the water was much better that it had been on arrival, although we were assured it had been cleaned at the end of the last rental. With not seeing anyone from the Company, it was extremely difficult to get these simple things sorted.
The level of service is well below expectations and we will not recommend Luxury Holidays, or use them again.

Owner's Response: We post the following reply, as unfortunately there are a number of inaccuracies in the review.

We can confirm that a full set of linen, kitchen equipment & bath towels were supplied for the guests. There were also tea towels, oven gloves, washing up liquid & dishwasher tablets were all supplied & located under the kitchen sink cupboard of the lodge.

The Welcome Pack was sent to the guest within 24 hours of their booking, the booking was made on the 22.1.14 at 12:48 & the Welcome Pack sent to the email address supplied on the 22.1.14 at 20.08, less than 8 hours after the booking was made.

The kitchen is fully equipped with cooking utensils, Knives, pots & pans etc & we did not receive any communication from the guests during their stay. We have subsequently examined the chopping board, & the kettle, both items did need replacing & we can confirm that they have now been replaced & we offer our apologies for any inconvenience used.

We do indeed supply a full set of towels, that being a bath towel & hand towel per guest which again we can confirm were supplied to these guests. The guests booking form indicated that there would be 6 adult guests, so this was the number of towels provided, it transpired that there were in fact 11 adult guests in total, which was clearly higher than the agreed number of guests at the time of booking.

We can confirm that bath/shower mats are indeed supplied for each bathroom in the property.

The gas BBQ has been replaced by a charcoal BBQ, as feedback from our guests suggest they do prefer a charcoal BBQ, rather than a gas unit.

Our Guests Relations Manager did visit the guests on arrival & again on the Tuesday, to take a look at the hot tub. The water of the hot tub appeared to have a large amount of foam in it, as if shampoo, or bubble bath had been added. We changed the water & retreated the tub, ready for the remainder of the guests stay. Our cleaners also visited the guest again on the Wednesday with a supply of fresh towels & dishwasher tablets

We are genuinely sorry that the guests were less than 100% satisfied with their stay, but we do feel that they have grossly exaggerated the number of relatively small issues that occurred.

We would like to assure all future guests that we attach a very high priority to the levels of customer service that we provide & as such, we employ a full time, onsite, Guest Relations Manager, to liaise with our guests & ensure that they get the most from their holiday.

Stunning inside and out!

Always wanted to stay in an upside down house, and this must be one of the best, the lounge and kitchen/diner is at the top of the house, giving a stunning view over the lake. Really fabulous, especially with the big balconies! All mod cons are top of the range, they spent time and money on the interiors as much as the building. We came with friends for a relaxing weekend, and we didn't want to leave! Reserve is peaceful and you are literally over hanging the lake! Jamie was very friendly when welcoming us and helped us where to go out for the day. All in all we all raved about the place since coming home, it's a must.

Stunning property, definitely luxury!

Stayed here for one glorious week with the family and had a fabulous time. There was something for everyone, the kids of course loved the outdoor pool and being able to walk around the grounds safely. The adults loved the Spa, tennis courts and bird watching. Being in the middle of the reserve was just fantastic, being able to enjoy the lake and the wildlife that went right up to our place. Everything was as described in the house, which was spotless. Liked that everything was easy to use and we just needed to bring food. Excellent value and family friendly, only thing for me that could improve was if the onsite shop had a bit more range, sure it would sell more if that was the case. Have already recommended to friends!
