Why has Tobago been hailed worldwide as a premiere 'eco-tourism' destination?
Well, Tobago is not a volcanic island like most of the other Caribbean islands. Once a part of South America, many of the same species of plants and animals found on that continent abound here. So - whether you're biking or 'booting it' through Tobago's majestic rain forests, strolling along one of the island's many sanctuary trails, or simply reflecting amidst the radiant colors of Scarborough's well-groomed Botanic Gardens - you'll see: beautiful beaches are only a small part of what this tropical isle has to offer.
Its exquisite reefs are home to an explosion of marine life, making the best diving and snorkeling experiences frequent happenings in and around Tobago's waters.
Since 1776, the island's Main Ridge Forest Reserve has been legally protected, making it the first tropical rainforest to be legally protected in the western hemisphere.
Tobago is one of the few places left in the world to which six species of endangered and 'critically' endangered sea turtles return, each spring, to lay their eggs.
Yes ... Islanders really have every right to be proud. But boastful? Never! Tobagonians are far too modest, a truly happy-go-lucky people who have become so used to sharing their home with visitors that they know how to be welcoming without being intrusive.
Warning, Warning: the pace here is relaxed, far from frantic, with people actually taking the time to wish you a good morning and 'night'. Be prepared, yet rest assured: Tobago is also a place where you will find most of your back-home favorites, plus fine wines and premium alcohol, in the larger grocery stores.
Description of units available for long or short-term rental:
ON THE TOP LEVEL - offering spacious living for six people, this impressive three-bedroom, two-bath villa has a huge wrap-around verandah (over 125 ft.) for viewing the turquoise sea, and old-time wooden shutters with high ceilings for catching the warm breezes.
The large and airy master bedroom has a king-sized bed, walk-in closet, and en-suite bathroom. The other two guest bedrooms have queen-sized beds, high ceilings, and are also quite roomy. All beds are four-poster - very romantic - with firm mattresses for many restful sleeps.
There is an open living/dining area and the kitchen is immaculate.
All rooms are tastefully decorated, many pieces of furniture having been hand-made by craftsmen in the region.
There is a swimming pool at the back, surrounded by a sun-terrace, to which guests of this top villa have exclusive access. Set off the kitchen and equipped with a comfy patio set and loungers, it is ideal for al fresco dining after dark.
ON THE SECOND/GROUND LEVEL - there are two self-contained apartments - a spacious artist's studio; the other, the one-bedroom apartment, has a fantastic seaview.
Separate Accommodation on property also available: A cozy self-contained cottage sits snuggled in its own mini banana plantation, a perfect honeymoon suite. Especially since booking 'Hibiscus Heights' as a whole unit would certainly leave you lots to spend on a Caribbean reception. Well, can I just say that the first words that came out of my mouth when I walked into the room were..."I could sooooo live here!!! I love it! Thank you for creating this awesome space!"
The "Artist Studio" was such a pleasure and joy to stay in. And I stayed in alot, lol. It was a wonderful refuge at the end or beginning of my day. With only a few steps away from the "Pleasant Prospect"...this one is a very happy girl.
Thank you Gill and Paul for an uninterrupted pleasant stay.
I'm booking in again already!!!!
We loved this apartment. It was bigger than it appears in the pictures and in an awesome neighborhood for exploring. Lots of little artsy shops, bakeries, restaurants, organic and fair trade markets and little hidden plazas. We'd go back in a heartbeat. It comfortably sleeps 4.
We spent a week in Sweet Nest in April 2009.
For us, it was the perfect place to stay. The cottage was well equipped, had a lovely deck area and Gill and Paul were fantastic. The area itself is exactly what we were looking for in Tobago - slightly away from the really touristy part of the island. The beach was spectacular, about 5 minute walk from the property and pretty empty at all times. The restaurants and bars at Pleasant Prospect were great and there is a mini supermarket where you can buy the essentials. We got away with not hiring a car for the week as there was no real need. The beach is one of the best on the island and the restaurants and supermarket nearby covered all our needs. For a relaxing break where you are looking to unwind, it is perfect. The rest of Hibiscus Heights looked fantastic as well. It is perfect for all occasions. You could probably rent the 2 apartments and the cottage for a group of 10 or so.
We can't recommend Hibiscus Heights enough and, if you stay there, you certainly won't be disappointed.
Last week we took our grown daughter (who needed a break) with us to Tobago and stayed at Hibiscus Heights, hosted by Gillian and Paul. It was delightful. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. And Gillian and Paul are just adorable.
Just know that you have an easy walk down the hill to the beach, but as you can guess, you have to walk back up to the lodging. We loved the exercise.
The beach is so great we never wanted to leave. We even sat and watched the sun set over the ocean as we relaxed on the beach. There's sun if you want it or plenty of shade. The beach is cleaned and raked every day by a crew of cute ladies. And it's not crowded . . . just a few walkers now and then and some people playing further down near a hotel. It was just perfect!
And be sure you try eating at The Fish Pot just a stone's throw from Hibiscus. Food is cooked to order and it was great, too.
We plan to return in May or June and wouldn't consider staying anywhere but at Hibiscus Heights. Email Gill with any of your questions, and she'll respond.
By the way, I left a pair of very expensive eye glasses in the bedroom and hadn't even realized it before Gillian called me to see how she could send them to me! Thanks, Gillian!
'Hibiscus Heights' is a 1-minute walk away from Pleasant Prospect, a friendly fishing village with an ATM cash machine, a small but useful mini-mart, and a few very tasty local and fine-dining restaurants - the kind of establishments it's always nice to be close to on a self-catering holiday. Pleasant Prospect is located between Mt. Irvine and Black Rock, within a 20 minute (walking) radius of 5 of the nicest beaches along the Caribbean north coast. Away from the crowds of the lower lying tourist districts like Crown Point and the Store Bay area, these beaches are much quieter and largely free from any sort of commercialisation. Grafton Beach is just a 2-minute walk away. The Shirvan Rd. which runs along the lower part of the Caribbean north coast Rd. has become home to 1/2 dozen of Tobago's most popular restaurants. All are within a 5 - 10 min. drive of Pleasant Prospect. Recreational activities nearby this holiday home/vacation rental : cycling, diving, fishing, golf, horse riding.
Other Activities: Rain forest & bird watching tours.
