The Highland Club is the name given to the converted St Benedict's Abbey at Fort Augustus. The abbey is in the perfect location on the shores of Loch Ness, the Caledonian Canal and the River Tarff. Facilities include a heated Pool, Steam Room and Sauna,.

The accommodation is suitable for families of all ages. For mum and dad, an ideal for quiet, restful retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life but lots of activity for the family, tennis badminton football, water sports, the list is endless. a family holiday that has everything.

There are apartments in all of the buildings which constituted Fort Augustus Abbey, so you can choose between Loch views in the Monastery, the wonderful architecture of the Old school , the pet friendly cottages with open fire, or the great value apartments in the Raven Wing which was an annex to the school. There are some unique individual buildings named after their original use such as the Chapter House , the Scriptorium.

and St Andrews Memorial Chapel.

Lets start with St. Andrews Chapel. This is a stunning 2 bedroom apartment retaining all of the features of this memorial chapel with stained glass windows, depicting the saints. The owners have furnished it beautifully to compliment this and give a feeling of tasteful opulence. The memorial chapel is situated at the back of the abbey church but actually predates it. Easy access into the abbey church and facilities such as the swimming pool.

Another favourite is the Club Cottage, This is a two bedroom cottage which can accommodate 5 and while being pet friendly offers the luxury of air conditioning and a Jacuzzi

The Torr apartment is all on one level and great value. Two bedrooms, easy access for less able, ideal for families. The king size bed is guaranteed to provide a great nights sleep. Fittings and finishing touches too have been very tastefully sourced.

Laphroaig is a beautifully spacious 2 bedroomed apartment - Sleeps 4 + 2 on sofa bed, in the Old School with views over the gardens, tennis court and Caledonian Canal. Free Wifi

The apartment is on the ground floor, with a few steps up from the entrance to the Old School and is an excellent choice for the less mobile as well as families and couples. The high ceilings are a feature which enhance the spaciousness of this stunning apartment.

The comfortable master bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower, bath and WC. The high windows give this bedroom unique character. There is a television in this room.

The warmly decorated second bedroom has twin beds with the family shower-room close by. This also has a walk-in shower, sink and WC.

The kitchen is equipped with gas hob, electric oven, dishwasher, washer machine/dryer, microwave oven, kettle, toaster, etc and the granite worktops finish off the designer feel of this room which has a small dining area.

The lounge/dining area is on two levels. The dining table can seat 6 and there are a few steps up to the lounge where the raised floor optimises the views from the stunning windows. The sofa bed forms part of the very comfortable furnishings here.

Whichever apartment you choose you will be made welcome , shown to your apartment and given a tour of the Abbey and facilities so that you can make the most of it without delay.

Two bedroom in the raven wing. The Raven Wing was the Science Block of the Old School and evidence of this can be seen on the common stair ornate stained windows with engraved names of the school 'houses' The Torr apartment is on the ground floor easily accessed and all on one level. Views look out to the Cricket Field and Tennis court over to the Canal where you will see varied craft sailing by into the Loch The open plan living area incorporates full height, west facing windows with Juliet balconies. The luxury kitchen has granite work surfaces and is equipped to a very high standard. The owners of this flat have gone to considerable length to make the flat comfortable and homely with furnishings throughout of high quality. The king size bed is guaranteed to provide a great nights sleep. Fittings and finishing touches too have been very tastefully sourced.

If you drive through Fort Augustus you will pass within 30 Metres of the gates of The Highland Club, formerly ST Benedict's abbey. Yet you will probably miss it, a hidden jewel with the Loch on one side, the Caledonian canal on another and the River Tarff on a third side.

The seclusion, the peacefulness and the history, even the architecture are all still here, but now we also have luxury apartments with fantastic amenities, all right in the centre of the Scottish Highlands - why be anywhere else.

What makes this apartment unique

I never tire of the view of the Loch here, and love to wander down to the loch side and feel the peace and tranquillity. The craft passing down the Canal through the Locks are many and varied and I sit beside the Canal with a beer and let time pass me by.

In winter inside the Abbey is a wonderful place to be after a walk or a ski, the club lounge or the swimming pool are peaceful and relaxing.

Each apartment here is unique designed around the features of the original building, and finished off with personal touches by the owners.

The Highland Club is a converted Abbey with many original features not only of the Abbey but the original Fort built in 1715. The facilities include swimming pool, gym, Club lounge, tennis and badminton courts, croquet lawn, Table tennis, Barbecue stands, fishing rights on the loch, and an on site restaurant.

The village (a 2 minute walk ) is centred around the famous Canal Locks designed by Telford and you can enjoy lunch or a drink beside the canal watching them in operation as many varied craft come through into Loch Ness. There are a selection of ' Nessie Hunting' boat trips or fishing trips you can do from the canal side into the Loch, even taking in dinner at the Dores Inn round the loch, or visiting Urqhuart Castle.

The village also has a small Museum about the Caledonian Canal and the Locks. A short walk takes you to the Rare Breeds Farm.

Other sports activities are available at the Highland club buy arrangement: canoeing, kayaking, rifle shooting, archery and bicycles are available to rent on site.

Walking and cycling trails are in abundance all around Loch Ness and beyond. The Loch Ness Trail, The West Highland Way, The Great Glen Way, and many many more.

The village has a good range of pubs and restaurants and the quality is excellent. Check reviews The Lovat Loch Ness, and expect not only a great range of whiskey at the Lock Inn, but excellent wholesome food as well.

Fort Augustus is central to Inverness and Fort William so you can head north and take in Urquhart Castle and then the Loch Ness Visitor Centre at Drumnadrochit. In Inverness you might do the beech or the dolphin trip. You can also go to Inverness around the other side of the Loch or return that way as it is historic and scenic, stop and enjoy the views.

South towards Fort William will bring you firstly to Invergarry just 6 miles away, and the Great Glen Water Park, where among other things the adventurous might book a White Water Rafting trip on the River Garry, coinciding with the Dam release.

Then through Spean Bridge passing the Commando monument. and onward to Ben Nevis where you can choose the easy or hard way to the top. If you take an easy route you have to carry something, but don't try a piano, someone tried that many years ago and never made it - the piano never recovered!

When you come down go into the Nevis Distillery, find out Scotland's secret recipe and sample the result.

Of course you may take the ski lift up and even ski back down if you are here at the right time of year. Either way there is a restaurant where you can relax an enjoy the view

Fort William is a lovely town, have a wander round and try the Crannog seafood restaurant on the waterfront.

Coming out of Fort William further south takes us to Glen Coe, the visitor centre there is well worth a visit. The wildlife in this region will astound you if you take time to watch for it, and the information at the centre will help with that.

A great day out with the kids is to Landmark the Forest adventure park, and visit Aviemore if you have time.
