Photos and Description of this 7 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in Charly - Chateau Berry
7 Bedrooms, 5 Bathrooms, Sleeps 14
You may be one of that rare and precious breed of holiday-maker, wishing to combine a sybaritic escape from overwork, stress and worry, with a practical, effective and kindly act of philanthropy: wanting to enjoy all the pleasures of opulence and comfort along with a good dose of virtuous feel-good factor. You are in luck.
Chateau Berry is an elegant, civilised, blissfully peaceful oasis set within walking distance of a tiny village dominated by an ancient church. The Chateau is surrounded by 14 hectares of gardens, bosky parkland and wide-open greensward.
In a uniquely benevolent enterprise, it has been planned as part of a charity - working to support and bring dignity to the homeless victims of the Haitian Earthquake and the Sri Lankan Tsunami. Every aspect of this project is unique, from the guiding philosophy to the original furnishing; there is also an interesting voluntary scheme by which guests can participate as Ambassadors for the cause.
Chateau Berry dates from the mid 19th century, and has been restored and brought up to the most discerning standards of 21st century comfort and ecological soundness by its exceptional present owners. If you are that way inclined, there is many a green lesson to be learned here. If you are not, there is a plenitude of riding, cycling, fishing, walking, skiing, swimming and architectural pilgrimages followed by well-earned feasts of organic produce plus terrific local wines, to keep the pickiest visitor satisfied.
Your happiness is our aim.
Interior & Grounds:
Hall: The minute you walk up the old stone steps and open the double front doors, you are aware that you are entering a place where the antique has been respected, with exhilarating touches of youth and humour - pale flagstones, a chandelier, the sinuous curve of the wooden staircase all speak of a grand past. The murals, the eclectic furniture the Guernsey teddy bears contribute a leavening friskiness to this serene, symmetrical building.
Sitting Room: Simplicity, quantities of casually comfortable seating, large screen TV, a music system, and Wi-Fi - this forms the background to the contemplation of peaceful views animated by a variety of wildlife, and should this give you an appetite, you can indulge in afternoon tea with home-made cakes segueing languorously into pre-dinner drinks.
Dining Room: Dominated by a marble fireplace whose tall mantelpiece mirror reflects a sunny, high-ceilinged room with herringbone parquet floor, a carpenter-crafted table seating 8, an antique armoire and a delicate chandelier. Breakfast - champagne breakfast if you desire - in these surroundings guarantees a great start to the day.
Suite 1: Huge dual aspect windows open to the south lawn and to the setting sun.
Library: Plenty of comfortable seating and quiet pastimes - reading, cards, chess, monopoly - characterise this quiet room with its superb view of the setting sun.
Suite 2: A handsome wooden double bed, black marble fireplace with an antique overmirror, and polished solid oak flooring give this room gravitas. It has an adjoining bedroom in the same haute campagne style with a double bed, a casual sprinkling of antiques, and the same satiny wooden floor. It also has doors that open onto the bijou balcony above the front door. The two bedrooms share a bathroom of palatial proportions, with a double basin, and an old-fashioned freestanding bath from which you can gaze at peaceful green vistas.
