I had another house in Olhao which many people visited every year and some of you will remember. This house is just up the street from my old house which I have now sold. The new house has 3 bedrooms and the living is upstairs while the sleeping is down. which in some ways is preferable as it is cooler at night . I discovered Olhao through a friend who has 14 houses there ! He is trying to save the old houses and I and others all agree they are worth saving - we call it the Crumbling Foundation - as Olhao is such a special place and not at all your normal tourist location . Olhao has much to offer for the discerning traveller.

This house is very handsome and has a uniqueness to it and a lovely feel. It is very easy to live in without any worries of objectionable neighbours and is built like a fortress - totally safe!
Olhao is a vibrant , living town which is friendly and welcoming in the true Portuguese manner and this is why I like Olhao - it is not false in any way.
17 foot high ceiling in the living room with a through breeze and views of the sea. House is always cool and the terrace for eating off the living room is north facing so in the shade.
Underfloor heating in all the ground floor rooms for the colder months. This is a grand old house from the early 19th century and certainly has that feel.
If you are looking for somewhere both comfortable and convenient to stay in Olhao, I couldn't imagine much more of an ideal place than Richard's house. The house has been very tastefully set up with all the equipment you need to have a BBQ, hit the beach or enjoy dinner on the terrace.
The location amongst the twisting cobbled alleys of the town is perfect and very close to the markets, the ferries and countless restaurants. The helpful neighbour, Joao, will be able to point you in the direction of all of those on arrival.
Olhao is certainly a quiet town so if that's the vibe you're after it's perfect. There are not a lot of the traditional tourist activities on offer but hanging out on the sand islands is lovely.
We arrived in Olhao thinking it could not be better than our previous location / destination. But we were wrong. Just walking through the cobbled streets in the historical centre to reach this home was a lovely experience. The house itself was very clean, very well equipped and most importantly well laid-out. This resulted in optimum use of terrace, sun and light and allowed for many bbq's on the terrace. The atmosphere of the house is traditional and original and combined with the location (3min walk from sea front) you really get the best of Olhao: orginality, tradition, access by boat to the beaches, fresh fish and fruit and veggies and of course your daily coffee at the market terrace. This house allowed us to have a great ending to months of travelling. Well done on Richard for rebuilding the house with all original features and making us feel at home! Joao the manager next door was around when needed and the neighbours' chat made us feel part of it all. We definitely had a great experience and will be back! We recommend this property to couples, families and friends. A car is not necessary - all shops including markets and supermarkets are within easy walking distance as is the ferry boat to the islands.
I stayed in this house before it was actually listed as i used to stay in Richard's old house which has now been sold. This house is very old but has been completely renovated and is very beautiful. The bedrooms are downstairs and very cool and the living room and kitchen and terraces are all upstairs which works well. The living room has 18 foot high ceilings and a view of the sea and leads onto a lovely north facing terrace where we ate all our meals. The fish and veg markets are literally two minutes away and the ferry to the islands 5 minutes walk.
The house itself was very clean and comfortable and Joao, the next door neighbour and manager, was very helpful and speaks good english. ( his mother is a hairdresser and i actually got her to come in and do my hair! ) . He organises the cleaner, Maria, who is around if you want her but cleans before and after.
I would recommend this house to anyone who wants a safe lovely stay in Olhao and you will be well looked after.
Apart from the lovely nearby beaches reached by a short ferry trip there are small villages inland with picturesque churches and squares and lovely little restaurants. Montcarapacho is about 15 mins by car and is worth a visit. Olhao itself is full of tiny cobbled streets and plenty of seafront restaurants selling delicious grilled fish and seafood and other Portuguese specialities. The Fish market is the best in Portugal with fresh fish caught every day except Sunday.A kilo of the best fresh sardines is about 5 euros.Also plenty of fresh turbot, sea bass, John Dory, oysters, sole etc. Paradise ! Next to the fish market is the vegetable and meat market, both markets situated yards from the water. There is also a supermarket where you can get a good bottle of wine for 3 or 4 euros.
There are three islands which are reached by ferry, Armona being the closest and then pristine white beaches and a few little restaurants. A lovely way to spend the day or half a day - don't forget the sun umbrellas.( supplied)
For a longer trip Seville is just over 2 hours away. The Spanish border is 45 mins away and there are some lovely beaches on the way such as Fabrica which is absolutely fabulous, restaurant right on the beach.
All these places can also be reached by a charming train journey along the coast - well worth a trip. Faro is also a very interesting town with its history and old quarter.Also good hospital and good danish dentist.(details in house)
There is an art school in Olhao and also Tavira which is an old Roman town and well worth visiting ( to the east about 20 kms)
You do not really need a car if you are not going on longer trips as everything in Olhao is walk-able.
There is a national park just to the east of Olhao where many interesting birds can be seen including flamingos and the ubiquitous storks which nest on the high steeples and chimneys of Olhao.
Bike hire is available as are water taxis to the Islands for a quicker arrival. Fuseta is another charming village 10 kms east of Olhao and can be reached by train or car or bus.
Saturday is a big market day when an extra market is set up by the other two markets in Olhao. This is for the local produce that is grown or raised in the local area such as fresh locally grown almonds, all sorts of fruits and veg etc.
Altogether a wonderful 18th century undiscovered town where you can explore to your hearts content.
