Family landscape

Clapham is where the city can’t help but settle down. Yummy mummies push their strollers in the shade cast by mature trees, the Common echoes to the yelps of apple-cheeked youths and, at the first inkling of sunshine, each café spills its tables and families outside. There’s no better place to bring the brood than here – particularly if here is Almeric Road. A tempting period townhouse, the floorboards are wooden, the plasterwork intricate and the décor snug. The little ones have both Wandsworth and Clapham commons to romp around, while grown-ups can shop for days in Northcote Road, the wholesome heart of Nappy Valley…

You and yours

Your American hosts have two young children, and spend three months of every year back over the pond. They love the laid-back Clapham lifestyle, and being so close to the Common.

Putting down roots

With its wooden floorboards, warming daylight and peaceful patio garden, this home is as natural as its location. Pad over those floorboards onto the sitting room’s brilliantly slouchy sofa. Here you can flick on the TV, fire up the speakers or just have a good sprawl. Bay windows ensure buckets of sunshine. Skip down to the basement for the sleek, skylit kitchen, trendy in red and black and, of course, excellently equipped for family feastings. You’ve a table for five, but on sunny days you’ll hear the patio calling for you to carry that plate outside.

A trip upstairs brings you to the bedrooms. You’re a fresh, airy double, a bunk-bedded children’s room dotted with toys and another double on the top floor, bright and boyish. The master is welcoming and warm, with a cushy sofa, richly robed bed and ensuite. You’ve two more bathrooms, just as laden with our White Company goodies.
