About Melanie Stephens

I have been fortunate to be brought up in a small fishing village in the west of Cornwall. For as long as I have known my parents have had the cottage in Devon as a retreat from the bustling summer tourism. This has always been a treasured family holiday home where we could all recharge our batteries together.

Melanie Stephens purchased this cottage in 1960

Why Melanie Stephens chose Manaton

My parents fell upon this property when touring Devon in their caravan. On first sight they fell in love with this picturesque thatched cottage and we have treasured it as part of the family ever since.

What makes this cottage unique

Who could fail to adore this charming cottage nestled in the heart of Dartmoor? It offers peace and tranquillity from everyday stresses yet never faraway there's plenty of little villages and towns to explore. Further afield there's many more opportunities to visit tourist attractions such as; Paignton Zoo, Torquay Amusements, Newton Abbott Horse racing, golf courses and much more.

Cosy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed here for a week at Christmas, it's perfectly located in the heart of Dartmoor with lots of lovely pubs and walks nearby. It's a cosy cottage with a lovely wood burner and an extremely powerful power shower! One note of caution - the hot water runs out quickly so be sure to turn on the booster (located at the top of the stairs) and don't expect to all have a shower in the morning if there's 5 of you!!! The cottage has everything you could need for a week away and we wouldn't hesitate in recommending it or returning for another week.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your useful comments, particularly about the hot water supply. We were unaware of this and are now looking into the possibility of improving the situation.

Have just returned from a lovely Christmas here with the family. The cottage is very cosy and well-located, close to lots of excellent walking and Dartmoor attractions, and is a great place to spend a week.

Beautiful cottage with gorgeous walks

  • 5 of 5

Have stayed here twice now and just booked for next may. Stunning cottage with enclosed garden close to dartmoor. All mod cons and three bedrooms. A short drive away from the coast and seaside towns. You can see haytor rock from the bedroom window and Becky falls only a short walk away. Local pub cooks good food with a friendly atmosphere and dog friendly.

My two JRT's enjoy their holiday just as much as we do :-)

Lovely Cottage in amazing spot!

  • 5 of 5

We met our friends here for a long weekend and we could not have been happier. The cottage is lovely and has everything in it you could hope for. The garden is gorgeous and our dog found a tennis ball in the hedge and stayed out playing with it practically all weekend! The garden is a sun trap and the sun loungers were well received! The pub in Manaton was really friendly and the food was great for a good old pub meal. Not a gastro pub which is quite a relief to be able to have good old fish and chips! We had a fantastic walk from the cottage which took all day and went to North Bovey in the evening to the lovely pub there which was holding a sheep shearing competition! All in all the cottage is lovely and Melanie was very kind - she called us to see if we had arrived ok and also left the most beautiful lemon cake which was appreciated on our walk! Thank you Melanie - hopefully we will be able to come back again soon!

Cosy Devon Cottage in superb location

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cottage with so many thoughtful touches. The owners were very considerate and made sure we had arrived safely.

Manaton is in the heart of Dartmoor with excellent pubs to visit for lunch and dinner. We didn't find any that wouldn't let the dog inside and the food was excellent. Walking from the door, fantastic woodland walk to Lustleigh, really challenging through steep woodland and across the river, well worth the effort. Walk up Haytor, amazing!

Cottage very clean and comfortable. In wet weather the drying utility room was a blessing.

A bit tight returning from walks with wet people and dogs, however we managed taking it in turns with plenty of towels and it wouldn't put us off staying again.

Owner's Response: It might be a good idea to dry dogs in the front porch before allowing them in. The seating arrangement in the living room is flexible and can be rearranged to suit the individual.

Becky Falls a natural waterfall is located in the village of Manaton. The village itself is situated in the Dartmoor Natural Park and there are plenty of walks from the front door through the local countryside and rugged moors. It's a nature lover's haven with plenty of fine watering holes nearby for those more interested in sampling good country meals and ales.
