Beach Front Holiday Apartment On The Dona Lola Resort At Calahonda.

Bedrooms 3
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 7 nights

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday apartment in Calahonda - Martha 242 - Dona Lola Resort

Air conditioned penthouse with 3 swimming pools. 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms

The apartments of the Gold Crown holiday complex of Dona Lola are right beside the sea, amid heavily scented gardens, swaying palms and waterfalls.

This privately-owned air-conditioned penthouse is on the third (top) floor, no lift and has superb unimpeded views of the sea and coast-line from a its intimately private, spacious, South-facing balcony, with dining table, 6 chairs, and a couple of loungers. An ideal spot for spending those long sunny days just relaxing, watching the fishing boats and ferries on the ocean right in front of you, and for romantic evenings.

There are 3 swimming pools. The largest, at 270 feet long, meanders right by the sea. The second is for over 18's, is heated by solar panels, and offers a peaceful alternative to the main pool at peak times. The third is also heated and inside our leisure complex, along with fully-equipped gym, saunas, steam-room, jacuzzi, beauty-salon, etc.

We have tennis courts, playground, mini-market, & several bars & restaurant

A spectacular vista!: From this top floor vantage point, the fishing boats can be seen leaving the beach in the morning, and returning to beach-up a few hours later. Larger boats and ships, including cruise ships, are constantly appearing and disappearing from view. Some of my guests have told me that they have spent quite a large proportion of their holiday on this balcony, just watching nautical life go by. And why not? The perfect place to dine 'alfresco', and you're not far from the fridge for cool drinks, or the air-conditioned rooms within if things really do get too hot.

It's a good spot for bird-watching too. Mostly you're looking down on them! I provide binoculars to watch the diving birds. If you're lucky you'll see gannets & dolphins !

And it's a wonderfully romantic place to sit in the dark, watching the twinkling mast-head lamps on the boats, and on a clear night, lights along the African coast-line. You can imagine you're in a crows nest !

The Dona Lola resort offers an extremely extensive range of leisure facilities. The outdoor pool begins at a shallow end safe for youngsters, and then just meanders right alongside the sea and under 2 lovely white bridges before reaching the deep end.

Dozens of lounger’s and umbrellas surround the pool, and it's a lovely place to relax, with the hypnotic sound of the waves lapping up the beach and against the rocky outcrops providing snooze-inducing background music.

There's an area near the pool for the youngsters to gather, with pool-tables.

Our heated & sheltered adult pool offers a quieter facility at peak-times. There are loads more lounger’s & umbrellas here, and you're within easy reach of the bar / bistro in a lovely sun-trap amongst waterfalls & ponds. There is an indoor leisure centre, with it's own heated pool, spa, saunas, steam-room, and gym etc.

There is a children's play-room under the supervision of Curro, our entertainment provider !

Extensive range of sporting facilities.: There are tennis courts on the complex, and there are snooker, pool, and table-tennis tables in the indoor leisure centre. There are good places in the sea close by for snorkelling. On beaches within easy reach of the resort you can try water-skiing, jet-biking, sailing, and wind-surfing. There's a diving school at Torreblanca, horse-riding (and horse-racing!) at fuengirola, some cracking bowling greens at very nearby Miraflores, water-parks at Torremolinos and Fuengirola, and a casino at Benalmadena! There are opportunities to partake in a 'jeep safari', or to ride a quad-bike in the 'Sierras' just inland.

If you decide not to hire a car, but want to see more of Spain, then book a space on a coach at the Dona Lola reception. There are regular organised coach-trips to such spectacular places as Ronda, Nerja, and Seville, and to some less-spectacular, but interesting, Tangiers! You can often partake in a FREE reception trip to Malaga or Mijas, or to the market at Fuengirola.

About Jacqui Salazar

Hi there I grew up in Hertforshire, near Watford to be precise, then as a teenager I felt the need to travel so I came to Spain varous times until in my early 20's I met my husband from S America and we lived there for 8 years, then we returned to the UK with 4 beautiful children, where we have lived for the past 25 years. Now we are retired and live in Andalucia,, very close to Dona Lola and we love it.

Jacqui Salazar purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Jacqui Salazar chose Calahonda

This property is home from home. It is fully equipped with everything you could want for a care-free holiday. It is comfortable and spacious, relaxed, yet close by are restaurants, a mini-market and twice a week there is an open market that sells Italian clothes and handbags, fruit and vegetables and sometimes antiques. All this and its still quiet. PLUS the sound of the sea to lull you to sleep at night. .The view from the terrace is second to none. Why not come and try it out - we look forward to seeing you......

What makes this apartment unique

Apart from the above and as well as, are the amenities of the Dona Lola Resort Complex - in total safety and security you can relax at the adult only pool or go to the beach. Eat at one on the restaurants either on the complex or very nearby - beachside......All these little things made us love Martha 242 and that is why we would like to share it with you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The whole experience was so easy from the minute I contacted the owner to our arrival back home. The apartment was huge and had everything you could want for a holiday. We didn't cook but there was plenty of equipment to do so. The complex is very well maintained and peaceful with an adult only pool. The indoor pool is great with Aqua Aerobics most days which we went to and were very impressed. Everyone was so friendly. The location of the apartment is great as you can easily get the bus to Marbella, Fuengirola, La Cala. Jacqui organised a driver to collect and bring us back to the airport and let us in to the apartment. He was excellent and very reasonably priced. Myself and my sister and mother travelled together but the apartment could easily accommodate 6 people and would be lovely for a family. I would not hesitate to recommend it and would love to return. Jacqui was so good e-mailing and giving us all of the info we may have needed which made the trip so relaxing and enjoyable.

Delightful Dona Lola!

  • 5 of 5

We would highly recommend staying at this charming apartment which was exactly as described in the listing. Location was excellent, only a straightforward 25 minute car journey from Malaga airport and the complex was situated right on the sea front. The furthest we travelled was to Seville approx 2hours drive away but was well worth it and Ronda was 1hour. The living room and master bedroom had stunning sea views, also great for watching the sun come up. The complex was well looked after and the leisure facilities looked great although we just didn't get time to use them. There was also a convenient shop and a few bars/restaurants on site with more situated across the road -all within easy walking distance including Italian, Chinese, Indian, Spanish and English. The apartment itself was clean, well maintained and had a lovely sea themed decor. It didn't seem like a holiday flat but felt homely. We made good use of the washing machine, dishwasher, cooker, toaster and microwave with no problems. 6 of us were sharing with no hot water shortages neither morning nor night. Brian, the owner was very helpful and informative, providing generous information before and after making the booking and on arrival.

Fantastic!! We would not hesitate to come back....

  • 5 of 5

After a lovely friendly welcome from Jacqui the owner we were more than happy with the apartment. Everything we needed and more was available, the apartment was clean, attractive and the view from the balcony was stunning.. There were no hidden extras and that included the use of air con and wifi which was great. My only regret was not booking sooner so we could have had two weeks instead of one. A huge thank you to Jacqui for providing an amazing holiday retreat ..... On an added extra the actual complex Dona Lola was beautiful with something for everyone the main pool was amazing with sea views and a lovely pool bar ....

Spacious, fully equiped, comfortable, amazing view

  • 5 of 5

We arrived to be greeted by Jacqui who showed us around the apartment. The apartment is on the top floor and has the advantage of not having much noise because of it. It was fully equipped of anything you could possibly need in the kitchen. There was plenty of everything. The bedrooms were perfect and the sea view for the master bedroom was just perfect. The wifi was a must and worked perfectly. The sea view was breath taking and the binoculars that were there for our use were used all the time. The apartment is at the back of the restaurants which is a huge plus and only about 2 mins to the pool. All in all would highly recommend this apartment. The owners were a pleasure to deal with.

we had a lovely welcome from the owner jacqui who showed us around her lovely apartment , the apartment is very comfortable and clean, the kitchen is very well equiped and it was nice to have use of the washing machine and not to have to bring home dirty washing. The lounge/dining room was very comfortable with a large tv and views of the sea. The two twin rooms are a good size with nice large wardrobes and comfy beds, the master bedroom is lovely and big with views of the sea and feels very bright and airy, the beds are comfy and we had no trouble sleeping during our stay, all rooms had air conditioning but we did not need to use it. The balcony is where we spent most of our time looking out to sea and drinking wine. The complex itself is very well tended with lovely gardens and waterfalls, the large pool area is very nice but was too cold to swim in in may, this is probably not a problem in july/august, the over 18s pool was heated and usually busier, we did not have a problem getting sunbeds. We also used the indoor pool/jacuzzi and steam room which made a nice change. Just infront of the complex is a row of restaurants and across the footbridge (a 5 minute walk) are some shops, we ate in the italian restaurant Da Vinci every night as the food and staff were all lovely.

we would definetly return to this complex just for the lovely apartment and very helpful owner jacqui.

Great views and well equipped

  • 5 of 5

As I have read all the other reviews I don't want to repeat the same things too much but DO believe the hype. The apartment is really good and Brian is wonderful. Our kids were delighted to find the inflatable toys for the pool, tucked away in a drawer. The proximity to the restaurants makes going out easy. I would recommend Entrecote, Da Vinci's and Tags. Vista Mar at the pool has been mentioned as just being okay. We ate there twice & whilst the first day portions were small, the second day was much bigger. Ham omelette and burgers were very good. The Dynasty bar is very close and is great if you have kids as you sit outside and they can run about with their friends. The kids club worked well. We arrived on a Wednesday, and the other kids seemed to all know each other. It turned out that as most people arrive on a Saturday they have a welcome meeting on a Sunday and the kids got to know each other there. So after our three went to that they felt more part of it. They did things such as pizza making, football, Horror night (fabulous fun for the older ones, 7 year old came back early!). The pool area is really nice and the shape of it means that there is plenty of space for loungers around it. As we were there peak we came down early to get a plot. Don't try to just leave your towel as the staff will move them if you are obviously not around after a while. However we were able to toddle back for lunch and come down to our spot again. Just a note about the pool. Our kids are 7, 9 and 12. The shallowest area of the main pool is 135cm, so the 12 year old was the only one able to touch the bottom whilst breathing in air! Whilst the baby pool has an area that they could practice their swimming it is not very big. This was a bit frustrating and scary for them at the beginning but as the holiday progressed, their swimming did too and really only the youngest needed help in the main pool. Thankfully the indoor pool has a shallower area so we went there twice and enjoyed it. Other things we went to were the reptile and parrot shows, the paella demo, a few of the music nights in Dynasty and the trip to Mijas. The Mijas trip was 9euro but you can visit the Macdonald hotel when there to see their new apartments and then get free tapas and Cava. Bargain! Top tips: Use Paco for sheer handiness and avoid Aquapark Mijas as it is a ripoff. Thought we would have ventured further but the resort is so conducive to relaxation, we just succumbed to it. We would love to go back.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write your review of my apartment Gayle. Your comments, particularly about the Sunday welcoming meeting, and the depth of the main beach-side pool, will be very useful to parents taking their children to Dona Lola in the future. Good though that your childrens' swimming improved ! Pleased too that you mentioned Paco....he's a good guy to know. Thanks again Gayle, it will be good to have you back.

Stunning Sea View at the Dona Lola

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was very clean and comfortable with tremendous views from the balcony which opened up from the lounge and master bedroom. You could see the sea with the fishing boats passing by. The complex itself was extremely well kept with plenty of sunbeds – never a problem to get one. We spent a few hours each day at the Adult’s Pool, (no under 18 year olds allowed) so this was very peaceful with a gorgeous pool where the water was quite warm and very relaxing. Nearby there were bars and restaurants - “Rays Bar” was a favourite of ours as it is a family run bar with a great atmosphere, very friendly with good food and plenty of entertainment. They really made us feel welcome. A trip to Mijas is a must. Only 9 euros and the coach picks you up from the front of reception and brings you back. Market across the road on a Thursday which is worth a trip but you must barter! Would definitely go back to Dona Lola. Thanks Brian for a great a great apartment and all the information you provided you certainly never left any detail out. We will definitely return.

Calahonda is a favourite holiday destination as it is ideally situated right by the sea between Fuengirola and Marbella (both about 10 minutes drive away), and only 25 minutes drive from Malaga Airport. There's an an excellent bus service along the coast, running every 25 minutes to Fuengirola and Marbella, and stopping off at many beaches, villages, and attractions on the way. If you wish to travel further afield in the Malaga direction, a train will whisk you along the coast from Fuengirola via such tourist hotspots as Benalmadena and torremolinos.

Calahonda has a wide variety of shops, banks, bars, restaurants and cafes. It has it's own medical centre, a picturesque marina, and two golf courses.

The lovely white village of Mijas is about 20 minutes drive up into the hills. Puerto Banus Marina is about 15 minutes drive. Gibraltar is about a 70 minute drive away. The magnificent Selwo Adventure Park at Estepona is in the same direction, but about 25 minutes away.

Other Activities: Bowling (Astro-Turf), diving school, jet-biking, off-road driving, jeep-safaris, crazy-golf, mini-bikes, go-carts, trampoline, dolphin-trips.

Golf: The Costa del Sol (or Costa del Golf as many Spanish road signs proclaim!) is known as 'golfer's paradise', and deservedly so.

Here is a list of 28 golf-courses within a 25 minute drive.

Rounds at most courses can be booked through our reception, on (0034) 952 932477. Discounts can be arranged. Ask to speak to Aemon Powell, the local golf-expert. (He writes articles for many European golf magazines.)

Ski: The Sierra Nevada is only about two and a half hours away by car. There is a wide variety of ski-slopes there, suitable for learners and experts. The full range of equipment and clothing is available for hire, and the prices are very reasonable.

The Sierra Nevada is a really nice place to visit during an out-of-season holiday at my apartment. You don't need to ski to ride on the cable-cars and ski-lifts, and to thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere and fantastic views. Hire a skidoo! Perhaps stay overnight, experience the atmosphere of the ski-bars too, and visit Granada and the Alhambra Palace on the way back the next day.
