Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Montbron - Chez Berthonet

Rural 18th C. character cottage with 2 bedrooms

Chez Berthonet takes its name from a small farming hamlet set above the charming village of Varaignes on the Charente/Dordogne border. Quiet and peaceful, the house stands on its own in the hamlet with delightful views across the fields from the south facing terrace and garden.

This 18th century property will comfortably accommodate two, with the option of sleeping four people. There is one main bedroom of character, fully carpeted, with antique furniture, a king-size bed and a pleasant view from the double doors that lead to the side of the property. The main bedroom is accessed via an additional sleeping area / dressing room, with two single beds. A further double sofa bed is available, if required, in the sitting room.

The main door of the house opens into a spacious kitchen with a large open fireplace and dining table, and there is a generous sitting room, with French windows giving access to the terrace and gardens. The house is equipped with WIFI, DVD player (no satellite or terrestrial TV), telephone, shower room / WC, washing machine, kitchen with gas hob/cooker, fridge/freezer. There is also garden furniture (and BBQ) should you wish to sit or eat out on the terrace.

About Mrs Caroline Beauvois

Retired teacher and life long Francophile.

Mrs Caroline Beauvois purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Mrs Caroline Beauvois chose Montbron

The property reflects a bygone era of quiet, rural life. Its the perfect place to escape the fast pace of modern life. The area abounds with rural footpaths and walking tracks amongst pretty woodland. The house is well situated for access to the near by towns of Montbron, Brantome and Nontron should you wish to go shopping or want to eat out. The city of Angouleme has may excellent restaurants, boutiques and a large covered daily market. It also hosts the well know classic car race 'The Circuit De Rampart' every September. It is well worth a visit whatever time of year you are there and is only a 40 minute drive from the house. Whilst the property does not have a swimming pool there is an excellent man made swimming Lac with sandy beach that is only a 15 minute drive from the house. There is also a beautiful open air public pool in Montbron which is a 10 minute drive.

What makes this cottage unique

I chose this property for its peaceful location, the countryside very much reminds me of my childhood growing up in the English countryside of the 1950's.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have had a lovely time here and explored a lot...your information and maps were so useful, thank you for that.

The house here is lovely and we have had some very hot days, on those days we headed for the Lacs!

Thank you so much for allowing us to stay here, this was Ben's first holiday abroad and we have all had such a lovely time - thank you.

Chez Berthonet is a perfect centre for exploring one of the most beautiful parts of France, or simply relaxing in the tranquillity of the unspoilt countryside. The area is ideal for walking and we also have two bicycles that are available for use.

The local village of Varaignes (only a 5 minute drive away and also accessible via a footpath through the fields) lies in the pretty valley of the river Bandiat. The village has a chateau (now a museum of weaving), church, grocery, bakery and auberge (bar/restaurant).

The nearby town of Montbron has a large supermarche, a variety of butchers, patisserie, bars and restaurants. There is also a very pleasant open air swimming pool and canoeing on the river Tardoir is also possible from there.

The Etang de Sainte-Estephe is a wonderful swimming lake with a man made beach and is only a 15 minute drive from the house. It is a lovely place to visit should you wish to swim, fish or just relax on the beach. There are several bars and restaurants situated around the lake. There is a golf course near by too.

Brantome, one of the most beautiful and historic towns in the Dordogne is only a 30km drive away and its market, held on Friday mornings is one of the largest in the local area. There is also a smaller scale market held there on Tuesday mornings.

The city of Angouleme is 35km away, and with its high speed rail link to London, offers an alternative way of travelling to the area. Car hire offices are situated opposite the station.

Limoges airport is only an hours drive away. Car hire is available at the airport.
