Surrounded by breathtaking scenery and with stunning views of Gubbio and its valley, we are delighted to offer you our private residence which has been lovingly restored using traditional methods and materials over more than 30 years, and furnished with antiques and period pieces from our collection. Gubbio is only 12km away and the village of Mocaiana 2.5km

Palazzo Scaglia is currently arranged to sleep 8 guests over 3 floors. It has 3 double bedrooms, twin room, a double sofa bed and a single sofa bed. There are 5 bathrooms with 4 showers, 2 living/lounge rooms with TVs, rustic kitchen, a dining room with antique furniture, milling and stable rooms with vaulted ceilings as well as a large sun terrace with outdoor furniture and a large 3x3mt jacuzzi hot tub for 8-10 persons. The property is fenced, has a video phone entry system at the main gate and a lock up underground garage. New central heating system for the colder months!

The Palazzo is furnished with many period antiques and art work from our collection. Additional beds can be installed in the lower floors upon request, and a baby cot is available for no extra cost

Set on the top of mountain, at nearly 900mt above sea level, Palazzo Scagliae dominates the surrounding valleys and hill tops and gives unparalleled views of Gubbio and the plush Umbrian countryside.

You will be staying in the XIII Castle which has been carefully restored by us and updated to provide you with all modern conveniences. Having been a 'Palazzo-Fortilizzo', you will at once notice the imposing and impressive stone structure, with walls that can reach thicknesses of over 3mts in some places.

Location:
The medieval town of Gubbio and its surrounding areas offer a combination of tranquility, history, culture and, importantly, a slice of true Italian life. Should you tire of the views at Palazzo Scagliae, you can wonder around the extensive private estate or surrounding hills and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and local wildlife. If you want to relax and take in the scenery, why not have a drink in the 3x3mt hot tub, or just chill and sunbathe in total privacy on the 20mt stone terrace.

Despite being less than 20 minutes (12km) from the center of Gubbio, Palazzo Scagliae is exceptionally peaceful, situated on top of the mountain with dominating and undisturbed views over unspoilt, valleys, hills and countryside. The main access road to Palazzo Scagliae is tarmac and consequently the property is easily accessible by car throughout the year.

Perugia, Assisi, Urbino, Siena, Todi, Spoleto, Rome and Florence are all within reach for day visits, and you can visit the lovely beaches of the Adriatic coast in a little over an hour.

How to get there:
The nearest airport is Perugia (45 minutes drive) yet Ancona, Rimini and Bologna, are all serviced by low cost airlines such as Ryanair and about one and a half to two hours drive away. Pisa airport is also an option being just over two hours drive away. Of course you can fly into Rome or Florence with many airlines, and the drive will take between 2.5-3 hours. A hire car is essential.

Parking:
Once you have arrived at Palazzo Scagliae, you can park on the grounds in the designated area in front of the main building, or in our lockable underground garage. For wedding receptions and events, there is ample parking space for guests along the rear access road and retaining wall.

Distances from Gubbio, Perugia and Assisi:
Gubbio, one of the most atmospheric and important medieval towns in Italy is 20 minutes away (12km). It is considered one of the jewels of Umbria as well as being its oldest village. It is rich in artistic heritage and offers many tourist attractions well worth visiting such as the Palazzo dei Consoli and its museum, Palazzo Ducale, Roman Amphitheatre, the Cathedral and Basilica of S. Ubaldo. You can find all sorts of shops, shopping centres, grocery stores, banks, restaurants and activities. Naturally, it is also the home of the world famous Festa dei Ceri held on the 15 May of each year. Everyone has heard of St Francis of Assisi and the Basilica there has wonderful 13th century frescoes by Giotto (1hr drive); while Perugia (45 mins) has great museums and Renaissance buildings and the world famous Umbria Jazz Festival in July.

Typical Food Products and Restaurants
A visit to Umbria would not be complete without having sampled some of its typical products and food. Gubbio is renowned for its truffles, both white and black, and is home to an important national truffle fair in autumn. If you are looking for a great place to eat, we highly recommend our friends at Federico da Montefeltro.

Coast, Beaches and Lakes
The lovely beaches of the Adriatic coast can be reached in a little over an hour's drive from Palazzo Scagliae. The golden beaches of Rimini and Riccione are readily accesible and are perfect for taking in some sun and sea. Lago Trasimeno, the largest lake of the Italian peninsular, is a 45 minute drive.

Accessibility
Palazzo Scagliae is not wheelchair accessible, as all levels have at least 2 or 3 steps as well as internal staircases.

History:
Palazzo Scagliae is a fort situated in the vicinity of Gubbio that dates back to the XIII century. It has recently been listed by the Italian government as a ‘Palazzo-Fortilizio’ of historical relevance.?

Over the centuries it has been modified, extended and adapted as both its use and ownership changed. Given its strategic position and 360 degree views over the surrounding Gubbio valleys, the Knights Templar decided to use it as a lookout tower and residence. From the top of the mountain they could control what was going on in the valleys below and relay this information to other towers on nearby mountain tops. They modified the building by adding stables to the lower floors and left their mark on the Palazzo by carving a stone over the main entrance into the shape of the Star of Malta. This stone still greets you today as you walk in.

During the 1700 it belonged to the noble family Gamboccio of the Quartiere di S. Martino, Gubbio; and later formed part of the properties owned by the Mosca nursing home in Gubbio.

Unfortunately Palazzo Scagliae then fell into a state of abandon and was used as a shelter for sheep until the Rossetto family purchased it in the late 1970’s. By this time it was nearly in ruins, had no roof, and was falling to pieces.

What we see today of Palazzo Scagliae is the result of nearly 30 years of meticulous restoration by the owners and specialist teams of master builders. Each stone has been removed, cleaned and replaced by hand using traditional building materials and techniques.

We have tried to keep and bring out all original features of the building to preserve its ancient charm and architecture. Restored features include: external pizza oven, traces of the original rain water collection system, internal water chamber, beams, carved stonework, arches, fireplaces, and mill grinding stone.

Modern comforts and advanced engineering have also been incorporated into the old structure in a very discrete and clever fashion. For example, the Palazzo has been reinforced throughout so that it is earthquake resistant.

Palazzo Scagliae has also been furnished with many antiques from our private collection, as we would love you to experience the property as we would.

It was a superb Villa and Holiday.
The Villa was well kept and all the rooms were clean and spacious. The dip pool was a welcome relief to the very hot weather in the region and we enjoyed that in the evenings. The overall area was excellent with great views and we all loved the history of where we were staying. Our hosts were superb and were very helpful with suggestions of places to visit and exploring the region. They were also extremely helpful as my Step Son actually proposed there near the end of our stay. We were very lucky to have a group of Musicians there who serenaded the night away and made the place very romantic. Overall, it was a superb holiday and we will remember it as just a perfect place to be.

The Most Amazing Castle On The Hill
If you ever dreamed of staying in a medieval castle on the hill, you don't have to dream any longer, because .... now you can. Palazzo Scagliae is amazing and it's very difficult for the images to actually do it justice. It is even better when you see it and stay there for yourself. The owners Andreina and Nello are two of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet. Their passion for a project that has taken them over 35 years to bring the Palazzo to the condition it is today is evident in their enthusiasm for the building and the attention to detail in which they have restored it. They met us and took us round personally explaining everything we needed to know for a comfortable vacation and at our request even educated us on more of the history of the building and surrounding area. It is a perfect location for Gubbio and the surrounding area in your own special grounds but minutes from the main road via tarmac, not rubble as you often get in this region. Perugia airport is only 45 mins away by car. Ideal for a family, especially if you are dog lovers and missing your own pets whilst away as you are visited almost on a daily basis by the most friendliest dog you could ever wish to meet. Sometimes she comes for a stroke and sometimes for a light dog snack! but mainly just to be with you whilst you while away the hours at the Palazzo. She then wanders off back home and doesn't bother you. There are a couple of other local dogs also who visit on a regular basis in the evening but all are very friendly and great with children. The views are spectacular and the seclusion and privacy of having a castle that can sleep at least 8 is very special. It is secure with electric gates and its own private grounds. We don't really want to recommend this special place to anyone because we want to keep it for ourselves but it would be a shame for others not to enjoy the building and location. Plenty of bathrooms, beds, space inside and out, pizza oven, bbq, hot tub, the list goes on. To have the whole Palazzo to yourself is fantastic and we can only recommend it very highly. We will be going back, sooner rather than later ! Thank you Andreina and Nello..two special people. Paul and Debby Bradbury and family UK July 2018

A truly magical and unforgettable experience
We arranged to meet the owners, Renno and Andreina in Mocaiana. They were very warm and welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. Because it was so late Renno gave us a quick introduction to the Palazzo and promised to be back at 9.00am to show us around the following day. Waking in the morning was a little surreal. Above us was a high ceiling with huge wooden beams and stone tiles and a wrought iron chandelier hung above us. There was sunlight streaming in through one of the heavy iron framed windows on to the stone floor and the sound of the birds and crickets outside along with the faint tinkle of cow-bells further down the valley was all we could hear. We had a quick breakfast and then set off to explore the castle and it’s surroundings. You could tell instantly that the restoration had been a labour of love for Renno and Andreina. The attention to detail and care is very apparent and there is a beautiful and tasteful mix of old and contemporary throughout the whole estate. The interior is simply beautiful and authentic and I personally had a sense of instant calm. The exterior of the building and the surrounding grounds are just as stunning. The grounds contain fruit trees and other large conifers, mostly the trademark Poplars that are so definitive of the Umbria and Tuscany regions. A large barbecue and huge stone pizza oven are available for parties al fresco and if things get too hot there is a good sized hot tub to cool off in.We were also adopted by Pepita (see photos), who we all fell in love with. A gentle and insanely happy dog who greeted us at the gate of the castle every time we came home. There are many beautiful places to visit in Umbria with several of the hill-top towns within an hours drive…Assisi, Gubbio, Perugia and the caves at Frasassi were breath-taking. I have many outstanding memories of our time here but one that stands out is the night there was a rather biblical thunderstorm! From our bed we could see the lightning bolts cracking through the sky and filling the night with an amazing cobalt blue light. And then the moon appeared, framed by the window. We watched as it traced an arc right in front of us, back lit by dramatic clouds and blue lightning. If you have any sense of drama, romance or fantasy or just have a desire to try something out of the ordinary…go to the Palazzo Scagliae. We will definitely be back one day very soon.

Step back in time
The first thing which struck us was the care taken to bring this watch tower back to its original construction. Everything in this house feels authentic and restored with care. From the original floors preserved in glass cassings to the boar head on the kitchen open pit fire you feel like this is pretty much how the tower must have looked when originally built. The owners are the ones who have undertaken this life project and it shows in how they have preserved the feel of the place but also how proud they are of the end result. The views over the surrounding area are stunning, you can pick your own breakfast fruits in the garden and the whirlpool is a welcomed addition at the end of a hot day. One additional pleasant feature is the town of Gubbio 10mins away which, like the watch tower itself, is a return to medieval times where the pace of the day slows down and you can just enjoy being surrounded by living history.

Great place with a lot of history
We spent two wonderful weeks at the Palazzo Scagliae in the surroundings of Gubbio. It's a wonderful building with a lot of history, carefully rebuilt and furnished with a huge enclosed terrain. For everyone who's interested in combining being close to historic places like Gubbio, Peruggia, Assisi and others, and looking for a great place to relax a blink of an eye away from main roads an traffic. We can only recommend Palazzo Scagliae to everyone. Thanks a lot for this opportunity.

Andreina and Nello purchased the Castle in 1975 and have been restoring it stone by stone over the past 40 years as an ongoing project and passion. It has been furnished with antiques and period pieces from our own collection. We live in the town of Gubbio so are just 15 minutes away.

Andreina recently retired from the Italian Foreign Office where she was Vice Consul in Belgium. Through her work, she has had the opportunity to work in the UK, Italy, Australia and Belgium.

Nello is a civil engineer who through his passion for antiques, has become a qualified antiques dealer and opened a shop in Gubbio. He has had businesses in Australia and also taught in secondary schools in Italy.

Why they chose this property

Palazzo Scagliae is a fort situated in the vicinity of Gubbio that dates back to the XIII century. It has recently been listed by the Italian government as a ‘Palazzo-Fortilizio’ of historical relevance. We believe that Palazzo Scagliae is unique for its combination of history, setting and contents.

What makes this property unique

Surrounded by breathtaking scenery and with stunning views of Gubbio and its valley, Palazzo Scagliae offers exclusivity and privacy. Your opportunity to rent out this unique building and its antique contents for your own personal use.
