Overview

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Branscombe - The Retreat

Contemporary Living Space (sleeps 4) With Rural Broadleaf Valley View

We are proud to present this brand new holiday let we have just completed building for the 2013 Spring holiday season. The site at Rockenhayne, Branscombe is situated in a peaceful valley on a site which has been a dwelling since the 9th Century. The Maggs' Family are the proprietors and live on-site with Tan, our border collie. We are 1 mile from the main coast road the A3052 and within 10 minutes drive of local villages, towns and all amenities. We are very pet-friendly!

The Retreat has been specifically designed to accommodate those with access needs and has been built using locally sourced timber and as much local craftsmanship as possible has be employed. We are fully Eco-friendly with solar powered electricity and heat-exchange underfloor heating. We have our own Spring water supply. As much waste as possible ends up on Rosie's compost and we keep two hives of bees in our vegetable garden, so we're doing our bit! We use Ecover natural cleaning products.

The Retreat comprises two bedrooms; a master bedroom with en-suite wetroom with disabled-access features, and balcony doors opening into a decked area overlooking the valley. The twin-bedded room has a flip down tv and an en-suite shower room. Both bedrooms have plenty of built-in storage and a hairdryer.

The superking master bedroom has a large limestone tiled wetroom with grab rails and extra features such as a small handbasin next to the toilet, and mirrors for those using wheelchairs. Both bathrooms have heated towel rails.

The main living space is open-plan with a kitchen, dining area and large area. The entire front of the building opens up with folding doors so you can connect with the outdoors and there is a large decked area with outdoor seating for sunnier days. There is a large private lawn area for dogs.

The living area has a 32' tv with DVD player and a 30+ library of DVDs. There are books and boardgames for you to enjoy. We have fantastic free Wi-Fi connection for you to use.

All areas have been designed as best possible to accommodate those in wheelchairs.

The light airy space and beautiful scenery will have particular appeals to artists, and Rockenhayne itself has a very calm and healing feel about it.

We have three other holiday homes on the same site if you would like to come with larger families or a group of friends.

Great Winter Break

  • 5 out of 5
I cannot write anything original I'm afraid but would like to add my Congratulations to The Maggs Family for providing such wonderful self catering accommodation. It suited us very well as it is such an easy property in every way but it is also delightful with a relaxing atmosphere.
The location is idyllic. Even in winter we sat on the gorgeous wrap around balcony at dusk listening to the birds & wildlife, a real retreat from the everyday pressures of modern life. We had a very pleasant walk around the donkey sanctuary a short distance away & even managed a picnic on the beach at Jacobs Ladder in Sidmouth. Exmouth & Topsham are easily reached & Exeter too is good destination on a Winter's day. For Christmas Shopping Sidmouth offers a variety of individual traders but we were sad to see Trumps has closed since we last visited.
We were made to feel very welcome at The Retreat by Rosemary & dear old Tan. The cheese & chutney were put to good use & we particularly enjoyed the warm scones upon arrival Thank you.
During our stay we were very lazy & went into Beer for breakfast where we discovered very good scrambled eggs & a warm welcome at The Bay View Cafe. Beer was just lovely at this time of year & a coastal walk on a bright & breezy day was a joy.
We hope to return to The Retreat. I was very sad to leave.

A GREAT RETREAT AWAY FROM IT ALL !!

  • 5 out of 5
Two of us and the dog stayed the first week of November and it was wonderful. We sat out on the spacious decking area for breakfast enjoying the surrounding countryside and woodland. The house is light airy and spacious as well as warm. Everything we needed was available and Rosie very kindly brought us scone and jam on arrival. Sidmouth is a short drive as is my favourite walk in Branscombe from The Forge to the beach. We will be booking again next year.

All equally enjoy this house!

  • 5 out of 5
We were a party of four adults coming from the US, one of whom uses a wheelchair and a walker. Our focus was on family history in Somerset. On the web, the house looked perfect. It is! Our daughter found the house competely accessible, both inside and out. We all felt equal in our enjoyment of the sheep, pheasant, skies, and surrounding hedgerows and pastures, not to mention the kitchen, open living room, bedrooms and bathrooms. The long, narrow drive down from the road was a surprise but totally doable. Our host was warm, welcoming, and made us feel completely at home. The house is located away from other residences so we felt completely on our own, but could readily walk down to our host's home if needed. We have rented many houses, in many countries, and we can heartily recommend this house.

Simply the Best!

  • 5 out of 5
After returning home from my stay at The Retreat, I had to review this property due to it's exceptionally high standard of disability access. Set in the most beautiful of surroundings, the owners of The Retreat should be applauded for producing such a high quality property that caters for all. The spacious layout worked perfectly for me, as someone who uses a largish electric wheelchair. There was ample space for me to move around the entire property without any worry. The Retreat has two bathrooms, one of which is a wet room, which has been kitted out extremely well, for people with a variety of disabilities. Also, the owners are very happy to organise extra access equipment (shower chairs etc) if required. This is a property that shows much attention to detail and an understanding of the needs of many disabled people. It is one of the best accessible properties that I have ever experienced and I would highly recommend it, not only to friends and family generally, but particularly to others with disabilities. It is a great base, whether you wish to explore much of Devon, both East and South or if you just wish to 'chill out' and enjoy the amazing views from the extensive wrap-around veranda. As someone who uses an electric wheelchair, I found the majority of local towns and coves pretty accessible. With the power of my 'leccie' chair, I was able to enjoy lovely Beer (manual wheelchair users will need a helpful push, as Devonshire coves are pretty hilly) and even gained access onto the pebble beach due to it's strategically placed mat paths (thank you Beer!). We thoroughly enjoyed neighbouring Branscombe and also travelled a little further to enjoy the delights of Dartmoor (a 45mins drive) and Salcombe. There is tons to see and enjoy, so I will definitely be returning next year. Please don't miss out on this absolute gem!

A heavenly home in the most gorgeous setting

  • 5 out of 5
Nothing about this home and surroundings disappoints. It is aptly named -- The Retreat. And it is so wonderful to be in a holiday home that is exactly as represented on the website (perhaps even better). Like other guests, we were greeted with scones and other treats on arrival. Rosemary is the perfect host. Since she lives close by, if there is anything you need (which we didn't, the place is so well equipped with the best of the best), she is there to help. The home itself is very private and beautifully melded with its natural setting. We were in Devon for a return to "roots" after many decades' absence, and this location, while certainly away from highways and distractions that go with highways, was an excellent base from which to re-visit other areas in Devon from one's childhood (e.g., Exeter, Exmouth, commons and moors). Enjoyed lots of settlements close by (e.g., Branscombe, Sidmouth). Walks in the woods and paths close to the property were a delight. The design of the home is truly universal in that it is both accessible and architecturally beautiful. We have visited many rental homes in several parts of the world. This one ranks right at the top. Thanks to Rosemary and Dizzy, from the moment of booking to the moment of departure.

Idyllic luxury hideaway - beautiful quiet location

  • 5 out of 5
The pictures do not do The Retreat justice. When we first arrived, we could not believe how lovely this holiday home is. Set in ancient woodland, a mile from the nearest main road, the location is secluded and private. We were exceptionally lucky to enjoy bright sunshine everyday during our weeks stay. It was a joy to wake up every morning and have the light streaming in, and pad out on to the decking with your morning brew and enjoy the birds singing.
The interior is spacious, exceptionally clean and well maintained. The beds are very, very comfortable. Everything down to last detail is well thought through and we had everything we needed. Rosemary, Dizzy's Mum, was most helpful and brought us freshly baked scones, clotted cream & jam when we first arrived, and honey from her bees on leaving. Thank you ever so much Rosemary.
Places to go: Beer Quarry Caves is a must. A very moving & interesting 1.5hr talk taking you through from the Romans to the 1920's of the lives of the quarry men, women & children. We were lucky to see 3 bats asleep down there. It's cold, so you need to wrap up if you go. Sidmouth rock pools & the Clock Tower (wonderful smoked mackerel, apple & sweet chilli sauce sandwiches). Lymme Regis on The Cob. Branscombe walk from the village to the beach along a footpath, where you will find The Sea Shanty for refreshments. Plus Cream Teas at the Old Bakehouse were delicious. We sat in the garden enjoying the birds & butterflies in the sunshine. Good food at The Mason's Arms in Branscombe. Seaton tramway was fun. Although we didn't take much to Seaton town, the beach and Good Frydays fish & chips were excellent. Recommend a walk on the footpaths in the woodlands around The Retreat too.
We had a wonderful time, didn't want to leave, but came home refreshed with lots of very happy memories & photos. Thank you again Rosemary.

A couple of miles drive into the picturesque villages of Branscombe and Beer, both with beaches. There are fishing trips offered on both beaches and a couple of great pubs in Branscombe; The Masons Arms is well known for good food. Catch of the day is sold on Beer beach and there are plenty of seaside shops and nice pubs there too and fish and chips if you need! The popular town of Sidmouth is a 10 minute drive away, and friends run Jurrasic Paddlesports from the beach there, with the option of paddleboarding or sea kayaking, and guided tours around the coastline. The market town of Honiton is 10 minutes drive also and is well known for it's antiques trade and curiosity shops. The Holt at Honiton is a lovely gastropub. The Hare and Hounds (5 minutes drive away) boasts a fantastic carvery Sunday roast. The famous Donkey Sanctuary is 5 minutes away and the Norman Lockyer Observatory at Salcome regis is a couple of miles away. There are plenty of walks locally and we have our own 60acres of land for you to explore. Pets are welcome and have their own lawn to use as well as any of the fields and forests to enjoy.
