The beginnings of Barbarano Cape could sink back in 1190, when populations veretine were forced to leave their countries pursued the assault of the Moors. Predilessero the hill as a place of rebirth Vorano calling, not to forget the peoples barbarians who forced them to flee, deleting a community known in the mists of time throughout the Mediterranean. Four Houses who succeeded to lead the country, the family dell'Antoglietta Capece 1190-1297 followed by 1297-1350, then the D'Aquino for a generation, with the return dell'Antoglietta still for half a century and with the reappearance of Capece 1442-1817.
Barbarano Cape is a small village of Capo di Leuca which boasts one of the most famous monumental complexes of the territory: LEUCA SMALL. It was Hannibal Capece to will and to build this work, a true example of hospitality and welcome, tangible signs of the hospitable nature of its people. The cult of the Madonna di Leuca had ancient origins to recall every year many pilgrims to the Shrine on the far tip of Italy, DE finibus TERAE, looking for redemption from their sins and to make sure the place in Paradise. But the trip up to Leuca was long and tiring, a veritable pilgrimage since ancient times marked by the striking ROAD OF THE PILGRIMS: little tracks that made their way inland of Salento interspersed with many traces of worship and staging points where the pilgrims were momentary rest before continuing their journey.
Leuca Small is one of these staging points: the complex included the Church for prayer, the inn for refreshment, the basements with niches for rest, wells for water supply, stables and mangers for horses and donkeys. Today, unfortunately, the road has divided the complex leaving the Church on the one hand and on the other the feeders and what remains of the inn. The charm of Leuca Small however is unique and striking, enhanced by the restoration and the recent new lighting.
Several tombstones, some disappeared, but is still in the memory of the residents, testify to the ancient wisdom of Barbaranesi. Famous one of the 10 P (Words Just Think Before They bring Pena So Think Then Speak) and placed at the entrance of the underground "Don Annibale Capece hor me if a fruitful time sviscerar made my breasts enter here, then, and hold you back at least the 'shade, the cool, the canteen, the wine, the wave. A day January 1, 1688. "
The church was originally dedicated to St. Lazarus, is a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture with neo-classical portico and interior decorative paintings seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Inside, on the ceiling are painted the four Evangelists, while along the walls, there are the figures of other saints. Particularly prized the two confessionals carved in the rocks and striking looks from the viewpoint terrace overlooking the church. In 1711, Bishop De Rossi in his report on a visit to Barbarano, called the complex of Santa Maria di Leuca Belvedere which became Leuca Small to distinguish it from the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Leuca.
