***** A LITTLE HISTORY******

The O’Grady Family purchased the Sunnybank estate in 1977. One of the oldest buildings in the locality, the Main House was built by John D’arcy who founded Clifden town in 1823. During 2002, Sunnybank House was extensively renovated into a luxurious holiday property and offers an outstanding holiday experience for larger groups with a private outdoor heated pool, sauna, extensive gardens.

We purchased Sunnybank Cottage ( a neighbouring property) in 2004. It is a listed building and again one of the original houses of the town. It was completely renovated whilst retaining all the best of its original features and is now a luxurious and cosy version of the original cottage with the best of modern conveniences.

The houses are furnished with a mix of antique or old country furniture, with the best quality of fixtures and fittings, bedding and household appliances. Each winter we spend time maintaining, improving or adding to each property in order to maintain standards.... We hope you enjoy !

**** CLIFDEN TOWN****

Clifden Town is the capital of Connemara one of the most scenic regions in Ireland. Established in the early 1800’s at Clifden Bay, it follows the classic 19th century layout: oval in plan, with 3 principal streets – Market Street, Main Street and Bridge Street, a Market Square, a fine bridewell or gaol, courthouse and harbour.

Clifden today is a vibrant and cultural town which has retained its historic roots while offering a wide range of services and facilities. You will find colourful streets with a great selection of small local food shops – (fishmongers, butchers, fruit and vegetable store, delicatessens and a bakery), numerous craft and gift shops, art galleries and exhibitions and other interesting shops including antique shops, designer clothes shops, jewellery and vintage shops.

There are 9 restaurants and 10 pubs with music sessions each evening and good bar food.On the practical side there are four supermarkets, including Aldi and Lidl, which are open until 9pm (mon-sat), two banks, three chemists, two petrol stations, two churches and a post office.

Set on the edge of the Atlantic, the surrounding scenery is spectacular, and waiting to be discovered.

*****CONNEMARA******

A vast coastal region world renowned for its wild and stunning scenery, and magical light. It is dotted with small villages and historical sites. To the north is stretches to the border of Mayo and the town of Westport is 45 mins. drive from Clifden. To the east it reaches to Galway city, which is one hours drive from Clifden and well worth a visit. To the south is the Connemara Gaelteacht area- an Irish speaking area which is famous for its coral strands.

Great Spring stay

  • 5 out of 5
We had a great one week stay in Sunnybank Lodge starting 20th April 2013. We were two familes with kids, plus one elder grandparent. The Lodge itself is extremely well designed, and the quality of the craftsmanship is evident. The main living area is very spacious yet cosy, including the kitchen, and the 4 bedrooms are all extremely comfortable. One can sense that a lot of thought has gone into the renovation of the lodge. It is just on the edge of the centre of the town, and extremely well placed. The surrounding land is quite small, although it does have plenty of parking and a tennis court. For those who love Connermara (like ourselves), it is difficult to beat. In fact, I don't see what more you could want something better.

Excellent - better than home from home!

  • 5 out of 5
This is such a great place to stay. The house is gorgeous and we felt at home immediately. It's very sociable with the kitchen being part of the main living area.
You are literally a few minutes walk down the hill to the town where there are loads of friendly places to eat and drink. The supermarket at the bottom of hill is good value and has lots of choice if you want to cook.
We went horseriding at nearby Errislannan Riding Centre and this is an amazing place. We booked once and went back every day!
The pool at the hotel is nice if you fancy that as well.
Owners are incredibly friendly and helpful. They own nearby Guys Bar which serves amazing food with live music and a great welcome.
Can't recommend it highly enough!

Gorgeous house in perfect location

  • 5 out of 5
Sunnybank Lodge is even better in real life than it is in the photos. Stayed for a week with our two girls - aged 2 and 3 and we were made to feel very welcome by the lovely owners from the start - very child friendly. We were greeted with a lovely welcome hamper of food and the house decor was so cosy we nearly didn't want to leave it every day. Great layout of a house and having one bedroom downstairs was great for having the grand parents over for a few nights. The whole house was cleaned to the highest standard. There was every possible kitchen item you could need in the presses. Loads of books and DVD's to choose from and was great having Sky TV was great. The house is in the centre of the gorgeous town of Clifden but yet was set back from the main street so there was no noise whatsoever at nighttime and it was hard to believe you were in a bustling town at all. We all slept great as the beds were so comfy. We were very lucky with the weather and had a full week of sunshine so got to try out all of the amazing beaches that are within a few minutes drive in every direction from the house. Our first time to this part of Ireland and we are already planning on holidaying here again next year. The one evening we got rain we took advantage and lit the stove in the living room which was lovely. It was brilliant having access to the Station House Hotel swimming pool and the girls had a great time in the kids pool there. The playground was just a stroll away and we spent many of our evenings there. On the last evening we were thrilled when the owners let us swim in the outdoor pool in the garden of Sunnybank House next door and it was gorgeous and not at all cold as we had been expecting of an outdoor pool in Ireland. Great way to end our holiday. With Aldi, Lidl and Supervalu all in the town it was so handy to cook in and there was a huge number of restaurants to try too. Try the takeaway pizzas from Guys Bar/Restaurant - got them several nights as they were so tasty. We can't fault this house or location in anyway and will definately be returning. All our family and friends were raving about the house when we showed them the photos and we're sure some of them will soon be making their way to Clifden too.

Sunnybank Lodge

  • 5 out of 5
We have been coming to the Clifden area for a number of years but always stayed outside the town. We chose Sunnybank Lodge from the internet based on the fact that it was centrally based and looked of a quality a cut abobve the norm for a holiday rental.

We were not disappointed on either count. With ample parking and a minute's stroll from the square it was perfect position. The Lodge itself wass very much "home from home", well equipped and appointed - very comfiortable and spacious. You could tell that there was a great deal of thought gone into making it an easy and enjoyable place to stay, from the complimentary groceries and toiletries in each bathroom, to the Wifi, satellite TV and DVD etc. Having the owners in the oocality and available when required was also very useful.

We would highly recommend for anyone who wants their own quiet and private space but wants to be very central to the hub of the town. We will certainly come again.

Clifden

  • 5 out of 5
Our family (including 3 children & a grandfather) stayed in Sunnybank Lodge for a week in April - it was one of the best family holidays we have had - the house is very modern, luxiuous, fabulously decorated and just a few minutes walk to shops, pubs & restaurants in Clifden. The house was immacutley clean with a very welcome welcome pack - its a real home from home with all the essentials and more and also safe for young children. From our base in Clifden we were able to explore all of Connemara without having too long a drive anywhere. Definitely 5 star accommodation - we will return and would highly recommend it to others.

5 star Ireland at it's best

5 star Ireland at it's best

This is one of the most tastefully decorated houses that we've ever stayed out. The peace and tranquility of the house was so comforting and welcoming. Salmon, brown bread and wine were included in the welcome pack which was an added bonus. This is highly recommended, 5 star, luxuriuous accommodation. Only trouble with publicly recommending it is that we may not be able to rent it so easily next time!
