About Simon and Jane Colston

The cottage is owned and run by Jane and Simon. Simon is a music graduate who continues to sing on a semi professional basis, hence the baby grand piano!

Simon and Jane Colston purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Simon and Jane Colston chose Shaftesbury

I had visited Gold Hill as a child and was captivated by the views, the unchanged street of cottages and the feeling of being on top of the world.

We fell in love with Updown from the moment we stepped through the door.

Shaftesbury has an other-worldly feel where people have time to chat and the High Street retains independent boutiques, cafes and shops.

What makes this cottage unique

Baby grand piano

The chance to live in a historic scene

The views

Huge attention to detail

Absolute comfort and relaxation

Within walking distance of all amenities but looking out over miles of open countryside

Guestbook comments from the owner

It could possibly be one of the MOST STUNNING places I have EVER had the fortune to sleep at. The decorating is elegant, the view MAGNIFICENT and the house itself is breathtaking. I really am moving back to the UK so I can come and stay once a month.

fantastisch

  • 5 out of 5

Owner's Response: Pieter and Els......thank you so much for your very kind review!
It was a great pleasure to meet you and we would be honoured if you returned one day.

I have taken the liberty of putting your review into Google Translate:
It's a great house, it was clean and fully furnished incl a Nespresso machine with capsules .. They had arranged for some food and a few bottles wine. The location is great, close to restaurants and pubs. Shaftesbury is a nice village and convenient also to the coast and by stonehenge. We have nice weather enjoy the beautiful garden and beautiful views. There's really nothing to be alone in the house, some doors are a bit low. The contacts with the owners went excellent. This home is a must. Pieter Els and Leiden, The Netherlands

Shaftesbury is an ancient town - the site of King Alfred the Great's C9th Abbey, the massive walls of which stand opposite the cottage. The charming market town stands 700ft above the Blackmore Vale on an outcrop of green stone rock and has views over 3 counties.

The cottage is ideally located for exploring numerous castles (Corfe and Wardour), Abbeys (Shaftesbury and Sherborne), cathedrals (Salisbury and Wells), shopping (Shaftesbury itself, Sherborne, Salisbury), historic towns (Bath, Salisbury and Sherborne), the Jurassic Coast, Longleat, Monkey World, National Trust properties such as Stourhead are all within the hour or less, and any of the charming villages, lanes and walks close by.
