My wife and I had an excellent time staying at Danielle's beautiful home in Luperon. This is not a tourist/resort destination, so it may not be for the less adventurous, but for those interested in the real Dominican Republic, you will be richly rewarded. There are several excellent beaches within a short drive. Some of the green mountainous scenery is so beautiful it is almost painful. The people are extremely friendly and gracious. There are several day trip options also available. Danielle was also an excellent host. She has a beautiful 2-bedroom home that looks exactly like the photos. We stayed for 6 weeks and regret it wasn't longer. The pool is gorgeous for peaceful afternoons. The night sky is filled with stars. This is around a farming community, so I must say we really enjoyed seeing the cows, chickens, turkeys, donkeys, etc. Coming from Chicago, I initially wasn't sure I would be able to buy sufficient food in Luperon. But once we started exploring the little shops and restaurants, we actually never left Luperon to buy anything. If you are a good swimmer, the beaches have impressive coral reefs with lots of sea treasure (small conches, urchin shells, white shells, fish, brain corral, fan corral, etc). I only took dead shells without inhabitants. The tourist areas around Punta Cana or Boca Chica have many annoying hustlers trying to make money. You won't have any of this is Luperon. We had a hard time spending more than $6 a day on food and grocery shopping. A guy fixed my flat tire for $2.50. We mostly went to the beaches (Playa Grande, Playa Chiquita, Playa Cambiosa, and Playa Isabella/Casillo), The closest airport would be Puerto Plata - about an hour away. Weather was perfect. I highly recommend Danielle and Luperon for someone looking to get away for a quiet adventure.

I grew up in PA, USA and have lived in the Dominican Republic & Ecuador for a few years. I have built up friendships with the locals and since it's outside of the 'typical' touristy spots, I couldn't resist to build a house here.

Danielle purchased this house in 2013

I wanted to build a house in this rustic town since I like to be in a relaxed, quiet local town yet close to the beach. But hey, don't let it fool you, it's close enough to major cities and beaches when you want a change. Its an island!!

The house has a lot of land around it - so no, you will not look through your window and see what your neighbors are doing!! You can relax in this house as it is comfortable and modern and from the outside porch while grilling, you may see cows walking by!

Relaxing and fun

  • 5 out of 5
My husband and I enjoyed our vacation in the DR so much that I have to tell you about it. We traveled the whole country from top to bottom on public busses and gua gua's. It was a blast and we are not young, ages 65 and 53. I would highly recommend the public transportation to everyone, just travel light. It is safe and very efficient and you will have a lot of laughs at the unique experience. We still chuckle about it. You don't need to worry about anything getting stolen they are very careful about your luggage. The positives about staying at Danielle's house is that it has everything you need for your stay. The house has plenty of space. I loved the shower. The bed is new and comfortable. I think it is a queen size in the master bedroom. I loved that it is near to the 27 waterfalls and easy to get to. All you need to do is walk to the end of her street (5 min.) just stand there and wait for a gua gua to come along and pick you up. They drive by frequently just hold your finger out. If someone is there they will stop it for you and perhaps you will see others waiting also for a ride. Everyone likes to help. It takes you to Imbert and from there it is 5 minutes away either by a moto (someone who will give you a ride on the back of his motorcycle) or another gua gua. We did all 27 waterfalls but you can opt to do less which is fine because the best ones are near the finish. Book to eat lunch there when you purchase your ticket. You will be very hungry after and the food is good. It's all u can eat. Wear old shorts and shoes for the water. The best thing we loved about Danielle's house was the pool area. There was never anyone there. We would relax by the pool every evening alone, not a person in sight and watch the sun set with a bottle of wine. It was fantastic. Every night we would ride the bikes into the town and have dinner at a restaurant. The bikes are in great condition and we asked if we could bring them into the restaurant while we ate and they agreed since there are no locks for the bikes. The town is laid back. The beach is pretty with very few people. The woman who lives in the 1st house outside the entrance gate sold us some of her freshly laid chicken eggs for our morning breakfast. We did not see one mosquito the whole time at Danielle's house, by the pool area or at the 27 waterfalls. Very unusual since mosquitoes are a problem in other parts of the island where we were attacked even during the daylight hours.
We have lasting memories!

Owner's Response: I'm very happy to hear that you loved this part of the country as much as I do. It is truly unique and with the trip to experience DR as a local rather than a tourist. It would be a pleasure to have you again soon!!

This is not your typical Dominican vacation. Get away from the resort type of vacation and live like a local!!

Luperon is a town on the coast, which of course has local beaches not lined with tons of tourists. It also has lots of fresh seafood that is available at the local restaurants as well as typical dishes. The town has other 'foreigners' who fell in loved with the town and decided to stay.

While you are there, take out the bikes and explore!!

Outside of the town, nearby attractions are 27 waterfalls, a must see when coming to visit. Also visit the mountains in Jarabocoa - go mountain biking, hiking and if you are feeling really adventurous, then go hiking up the tallest mountain in the Caribbean - Pico Duarte.

Lastly, visit Santiago - which has all the modern chain restaurants, super markets as well as movie theaters. The opposite direction there is Puerto Plata, Sosua and Caberete.

The house is in a great location, as you are in the middle of both the mountains and the coast. Get out and see the 'REAL' Dominican Republic!!
