About Kate and Kevin Thomas

We moved to Cornwall as a family in October 2010 with the intention of setting up our own holiday letting business and to have our own Cornish escape from our previous lifestyle.

We are Kate and Kevin Thomas and have 3 young boys who love the freedom of the great outdoors.

Little Rosewarne is a smallholding of some 9 acres and in the past has had its own dairy herd. We started to convert the old cattle shed and creamery at the beginning of 2012 and wanted to maintain the character of the building while providing a sustainable future for the farm. Our next project is to convert the old piggery and stables into further accommodation. Work on this will begin in 2013.

We keep chickens at Little Rosewarne and currently enjoy eggs from 3 Copper Marans, 2 Speckled Marans and one Cream Legbar. We also raise Berkshire pigs. These are black haired and famed for their great quality pork.

Kate and Kevin Thomas purchased this barn in 2010

Why Kate and Kevin Thomas chose Porthleven

We bought Little Rosewarne after holidaying in the Porthleven area over the past 20 years. We know the area well and would spend most of our holiday time either in Porthleven or towards Falmouth.

When we made the decision to move to Cornwall we knew we wanted to be close to the things and areas we loved. However, we had never been to Godolphin Cross or for that matter Godolphin House. But when we saw Little Rosewarne, we fell in love with the place and felt with its proximity to the areas we enjoyed spending time in, it would make the ideal place for us to live and raise our family.

Little Rosewarne itself is a traditional Cornish farmhouse with extensive gardens. We wanted to buy a property where there was the potential for a blank canvas and for us to make our own mark. The first of which is The Old Dairy. It also means we are close at hand if we are needed.

The area is stunning because it is situated near to Godolphin House with easy access to the the beach and fantastic areas and places to explore.

What makes this barn unique

We believe that 'The Old Dairy' and 'Hayloft' at Little Rosewarne is the perfect place to escape to, and explore this part of Cornwall. We hope that having spent many years staying in quality holiday accommodation we have worked out what works and what is sometimes missing and it is to this end we hope we can provide that little something extra. If you feel we have forgotten something or there is something we can do to improve your stay then please ask.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have has agreat time exploring the area and especially enjoyed Kynance Cove, Sennen Cove, St Ives and Glendurgan Gardens. Our children had loads of fun watching the rabbits, playing with Harry and of course building sand castles!! The accommodation has exceeed our expectations.

We have really enjoyed our time at the haycroft cottage. Perfect place to stay. Very close to all places worth to see in Cornwall. We very recommend the cottage, our little one enjoyed feeding the ducks, chickens and pigs, seeing rabbits, picking eggs and lots more. Will definitely go back in the future. Thank you very much Kate and Kevin. Regards :)

Fantastic place to stay

  • 5 out of 5
We have 3 small children and all I can say the Hayloft is an excellent place for a family holiday. There are small holdings of chickens, ducks and pigs and my daughters loved to feed them and collect the eggs in the morning. The Hayloft is brand new and the accommodation is of a luxury standard. Very well situated for the southern part of Cornwall, 5 mins drive from Helston and short drives from St Ives, Falmouth and other great locations. The owners were very friendly and accommodating and I would recommend the Hayloft to any family or couple wanting a holiday in Cornwall.

The Hayloft is a wonderful place to stay, everything we could of wished for had been provided and Kate and Kevin's attention to detail makes it all the more relaxing. The cream tea when we arrived certainly was a special treat!

We were very close to excellent beaches and all the great places South West Cornwall has to offer.

Thanks again!

We highly recommend it.

The Hayloft was a lovely place to relax and also use as a base to explore this beautiful area of Cornwall. We highly recommend it. On arrival were we greeted by Kevin and Kate, who showed us around and had unpacked our shopping delivery (our beers were in the fridge!). They had also provided ice lollies for the children, a cornish cream tea and Champagne as we were privileged to be the Hay Loft's first guests.

The accommodation was very well finished and equipped (all brand new) with everything a family requires, including two flat screen TV's one with DVD player, iPod dock, WiFi, Bosch washer/dryer, dishwasher, coffee machine, high chair, cot and even a children's step for the bathroom. The kitchen had everything you could need, even for baking, and the large bath and amazing shower were great. The bedrooms were a good size and the mattresses heavenly.

We have 2 children (James 2 yrs & Katie 4 yrs) and there was a cupboard with games, toys, DVD's, buckets and spades, crab lines etc. and a huge garden area to keep them entertained, including chickens, ducks and pigs. Our children enjoyed playing with Kevin and Kate's son Harry (5yrs) who was very polite, kind and entertaining. He also took Katie to feed the pigs.

There are a vast number of places to go and things to do in this area of Cornwall, including the countries best beaches in my opinion. Kynance Cove, Sennen Cove and Carbis Bay were among the ones we got to. St Michael's Mount was lovely and we also went to Glendurgan Gardens (National Trust) on the Helford River, a very picturesque spot.

Thanks Kevin and Kate for making it special for us.

The Old Dairy borders the National Trust's Godolphin House and Estate (as featured in Cornwall with Caroline Quentin on ITV).

St. Ives, Penzance, Marazion, Falmouth, The Lizard Peninsula and Helford and Fal Estuaries are all just a short distance away, thus making The Old Dairy a great place to explore the most southerly and westerly parts of Cornwall.

For beach lovers Praa Sands is close by, with Kynance Cove, Gwithian Sands, and Carbis Bay a short drive away. With access to both coasts there is always something for everyone from sheltered coves and sandy beaches to fantastic surf.

But if the weather is having an off day, there are plenty of fantastic days out. The Eden Project is a must and The National Maritime Museum and Porthcurno Telegraph Museum are highly recommended (ask our 3 boys). Other local attractions include Gweek Seal Sanctuary, Flambards and Paradise Park.

There are a number of fantastic gardens (such as Trebah Gardens) and National Trust sites (including Godolphin House and Estate, Trengwainton Garden, Glendurgan Garden, Trelissick Garden, Trerice House and Levant Mine) to explore as well as the Mining Heritage of Cornwall - Little Rosewarne is situated within the Tregonning and Trewavas District World Heritage site. In addition, there are some English Heritage sites nearby (including Pendennis Castle, St. Mawes Castle and the Chysauster Ancient Village).

For the more energetic there is easy access to some fantastic coastal walking along the South West Coast paths. Rural walks can be had from your front door - cross the road and explore the National Trusts Godolphin Woods (a blanket of bluebells in early spring) and Godolphin Hill which boasts a fantastic panorama. You can see St. Ives and Gwithian Sands on the North Coast, down into the Lands End Peninsula, with St. Michaels Mount, Penzance, Newlyn and Mousehole to the south. Further round the spine of the Lizard Peninsula stretches out with the distinctive satellite dishes of Goonhilly piercing the skyline and finally Carn Brea and the Monument to the north.

Cycling both on the road and off road is excellent with the Mineral Tramways Trails great for all abilities. There are local bike hire shops in both Porthleven and on the Mineral Tramways.

The small fishing village of Porthleven lies 4 miles to the south with a wide choice of pubs, fantastic restaurants, cafes and tea rooms. There is also a good choice of locally produced foods with a fishmongers and deli. There are a number of local pubs which provide a warm welcome, great beer and good food. We would be happy to recommend some.

There is fresh produce a plenty in Cornwall - from clotted cream and Roskilly's dairy ice cream, fresh fish and locally reared meat, poultry and vegetables. There are two farm shops within a couple of miles of Godolphin.

This is a small sample of places to visit and things to do to help you enjoy your holiday. We are always happy to suggest more – or explore what this part of Cornwall has to offer for yourself.
