We moved to Cornwall as a family in October 2010 with the intention of setting up our own holiday letting business and to have our own Cornish escape from our previous lifestyle.

We are Kate and Kevin Thomas and have 3 young boys who love the freedom of the great outdoors.

Little Rosewarne is a smallholding of some 9 acres and in the past has had its own dairy herd. We started to convert the old cattle shed and creamery at the beginning of 2012 and wanted to maintain the character of the building while providing a sustainable future for the farm. Our next project is to convert the old piggery and stables into further accommodation. Work on this will begin in 2013.

We keep chickens at Little Rosewarne and currently enjoy eggs from 3 Copper Marans, 2 Speckled Marans and one Cream Legbar. We also raise Berkshire pigs. These are black haired and famed for their great quality pork.

Kate and Kevin Thomas purchased this cottage in 2010

We bought Little Rosewarne after holidaying in the Porthleven area over the past 20 years. We know the area well and would spend most of our holiday time either in Porthleven or towards Falmouth.

When we made the decision to move to Cornwall we knew we wanted to be close to the things and areas we loved. However, we had never been to Godolphin Cross or for that matter Godolphin House. But when we saw Little Rosewarne, we fell in love with the place and felt with its proximity to the areas we enjoyed spending time in, it would make the ideal place for us to live and raise our family.

Little Rosewarne itself is a traditional Cornish farmhouse with extensive gardens. We wanted to buy a property where there was the potential for a blank canvas and for us to make our own mark. The first of which is The Old Dairy. It also means we are close at hand if we are needed.

The area is stunning because it is situated near to Godolphin House with easy access to the the beach and fantastic areas and places to explore.

We believe that The Old Dairy at Little Rosewarne is the perfect place to escape to, and explore this part of Cornwall. We hope that having spent many years staying in quality holiday accommodation we have worked out what works and what is sometimes missing and it is to this end we hope we can provide that little something extra. If you feel we have forgotten something or there is something we can do to improve your stay then please ask.

We loved our stay here. The facilities were excellent, everything was in such good order and Kate and Kevin had thought of everything. The kitchen was well equipped and in a cold week in November we had lovely warm bedrooms and felt very snug and cosy. Our 18 month old son loved his stay and loved being able to walk out the door and see the chickens and rabbits hopping about. Lovely cream tea too! Thank you for a lovely stay xx

Luxury, peace and relaxation with a baby?

  • Review Submitted: 22-Jan-2014

Luxury, peace and relaxation with a baby? We could believe our luck.

(The following is a review from trip adviser -http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g528843-d3982129-r189582584-The_Old_Dairy_Little_Rosewarne-Helston_Cornwall_England.html#review_189582584).

As any new mother knows, travelling with a baby or toddler means triple the work for the occasional flicker of fun very late at night when they (maybe) have gone to sleep. Days are usually filled with fending off dangers - from roads to pools to ill-placed lamps on sharp coffee tables. It's rare to impossible to find a truly baby-friendly hotel room, let alone holiday apartment.
On this note, The Old Dairy was perfect in every way. Seriously.
*Baby gate, nice high chair, cot and play pen that the owners kindly set up for us, DVDs and books as well as a really clean collection of children's toys.
*We can report that the wifi works perfectly throughout - I even had signal downstairs.
* TV in bedroom and living room, lovely fluffy towels, immaculately clean everything, amazingly soft White Company sheets, fabulous bath with a tap feature our 11 month old found endlessly fascinating.
* The property has easy-to-clean beautiful wood floors throughout, amazing glass windows and skylights everywhere and the best-equipped kitchen we've come across in any rental. I even had everything I needed to bake a cake and make a full roast dinner. They literally thought of everything - champagne glasses as well as enough wine glasses for a proper dinner party, children's plastic ware (nice touch!), perfect number of pots and pans, every utensil on the planet.
* The owners have worked with the space beautifully, creating light and extra feelings of space, even in a smaller room.
* Even the dryer works well (where else can you say this in England??!).
* Welcome scones (and in our case adorable mince pies and bubbles as well, for Christmas and New Years - thanks guys!)

Fab location too. Historic house up the road is great for walks sans car, and Porthleven 4 miles away has great pubs, restaurants (kota kai has it's own kids room, bowling and dvds) and coastal walks.

We rent out our French property ourselves, so know this game on both sides, and have come away seriously impressed with the job Kevin and Kate are doing. It's so difficult to please everyone, but they may just have done it :)

A lovely place!

We stayed at The Old Dairy with our two little boys (18 months and 4 yrs) in the Autumn. It is a lovely place to stay with everything I could think of that we might have needed on a week away (even if we had wanted to make our own scones for a cornish cream tea we could have done but Kate did that for us and they were delicious!). The Old Dairy is warm and has a cosy homely feel about it (we would have fired up the wood burner every evening if it had been cold enough). The boys loved seeing the Ducks, Chickens and Pigs and playing in the Orchard immediately opposite. Kate & Kevin were friendly and very helpful in giving us useful information about what to see and do in the area and where to go for good food. I would highly recommend this place and I hope that we will return for another holiday.

Charming converted Dairy in a cracking location

  • 5 out of 5
  • Review Submitted: 14-Oct-2013
  • Date of Stay: Oct 2013
Wonderful conversion of an old Dairy, with all the mod cons to keep us comfy, but with oodles of character to make it feel a bit special. This is quite honestly the first time we have stayed in holiday accommodation and not thought of something that was missing/that we could do with.

Smartly appointed, the large glass frontage lets the light pour in to the open-plan living area upstairs, and helps give the whole place a really airy feel, especially when the double doors are opened out onto the balcony.

The kitchen has everything we needed, and i enjoyed cooking there as a result. Even has a Gaggia coffee machine!

The beds were very comfy, the bedrooms of a good size, with the master bedroom having a nice en-suite. The second bedroom can be set up with either a double bed or two singles.

The main bathroom has a nice big/deep bath, and a separate, large shower cubicle.

As for the location, it's great......secluded on the edge of the village, tucked out of the way, but still within just a few minutes drive of Porthleven, Praa Sands, Marazion etc.

Our oldest kiddie, (2 and a half) loved playing in the orchard opposite the Old Dairy, and helped collect eggs one morning, as well as fed the pigs. Plenty of room for them to run around, and there's a slide and a few toys to help keep them amused.

Kate and Kevin were on hand if anything was needed, though to be honest, we didn't need to ask them for anything! They were both really friendly and chatty, and have done a great job here. A really great place to stay that is perfect for a family with 1-2 kids.

We will definitely be coming back.

Car: recommended

The Old Dairy borders the National Trust's Godolphin House and Estate (as featured in Cornwall with Caroline Quentin on ITV).

St. Ives, Penzance, Marazion, Falmouth, The Lizard Peninsula and Helford and Fal Estuaries are all just a short distance away, thus making The Old Dairy a great place to explore the most southerly and westerly parts of Cornwall.

For beach lovers Praa Sands is close by, with Kynance Cove, Gwithian Sands, and Carbis Bay a short drive away. With access to both coasts there is always something for everyone from sheltered coves and sandy beaches to fantastic surf.

But if the weather is having an off day, there are plenty of fantastic days out. The Eden Project is a must and The National Maritime Museum and Porthcurno Telegraph Museum are highly recommended (ask our 3 boys). Other local attractions include Gweek Seal Sanctuary, Flambards and Paradise Park.

There are a number of fantastic gardens (such as Trebah Gardens) and National Trust sites (including Godolphin House and Estate, Trengwainton Garden, Glendurgan Garden, Trelissick Garden, Trerice House and Levant Mine) to explore as well as the Mining Heritage of Cornwall - Little Rosewarne is situated within the Tregonning and Trewavas District World Heritage site. In addition, there are some English Heritage sites nearby (including Pendennis Castle, St. Mawes Castle and the Chysauster Ancient Village).

For the more energetic there is easy access to some fantastic coastal walking along the South West Coast paths. Rural walks can be had from your front door - cross the road and explore the National Trusts Godolphin Woods (a blanket of bluebells in early spring) and Godolphin Hill which boasts a fantastic panorama. You can see St. Ives and Gwithian Sands on the North Coast, down into the Lands End Peninsula, with St. Michaels Mount, Penzance, Newlyn and Mousehole to the south. Further round the spine of the Lizard Peninsula stretches out with the distinctive satellite dishes of Goonhilly piercing the skyline and finally Carn Brea and the Monument to the north.

Cycling both on the road and off road is excellent with the Mineral Tramways Trails great for all abilities. There are local bike hire shops in both Porthleven and on the Mineral Tramways.

The small fishing village of Porthleven lies 4 miles to the south with a wide choice of pubs, fantastic restaurants, cafes and tea rooms. There is also a good choice of locally produced foods with a fishmongers and deli. There are a number of local pubs which provide a warm welcome, great beer and good food. We would be happy to recommend some.

There is fresh produce a plenty in Cornwall - from clotted cream and Roskilly's dairy ice cream, fresh fish and locally reared meat, poultry and vegetables. There are two farm shops within a couple of miles of Godolphin.

This is a small sample of places to visit and things to do to help you enjoy your holiday. We are always happy to suggest more – or explore what this part of Cornwall has to offer for yourself.
