COMFY COTTAGE ON QUIET FARM, 25 MILES FROM EDINBURGH, PRIVATE AND COSY

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday cottage in Stow - Clachan Cottage

3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 1 cloakroom, sleeps 6-7.

Clachan Cottage is a self-catering cottage located in the beautiful, scenic Scottish Borders. It is located on a quiet farm surrounded by dramatic hills, with a burn flowing through the garden. The cottage has lovely views and is completely private. It is a 5 minute, 1/2 mile walk to the village of Stow down a private drive. Stow has a post office/general store and a coffee shop/cafe/gallery. Stow is 25 miles from Edinburgh, and a bus can be taken straight into the city from here. Galashiels, Lauder, Selkirk, Melrose and other picturesque towns all within 5-15 miles. There are many castles & places of historic interest nearby, as well as good beaches; just over an hour's drive. This is the ultimate place for ramblers, mountain bikers, or those who wish to take some good walks with excellent views! You can walk straight from the cottage to numerous trails, short or long. excellent Mountain Biking park 17 miles away at Glentress, best in the UK. Come relax & unwind! Great for families.

Golfing and Fishing nearby: The Torwoodlee Golf course is a 5 mile drive from Clachan Cottage. The Club welcomes visitors. There are numerous walks in the Scottish Borders, many of which can begin directly from the Cottage! Fishing can be arranged for you or independently.

The Tweed boasts many salmon pools and there are hundreds of locations to fish in locally. We can prearrange fishing for you if you wish, or can put you on to some local beats where you can arrange your own fishing!

Historical Sites : Within a 10 - 30 minute drive from Clachan Cottage are historical sites such as: Melrose Abbey in Melrose, Thirlestane Castle in Lauder, Gala Aisle and Gala House in Galashiels, Floors Castle in Kelso, Jedburgh Abbey, Crichton Castle near Pathhead, and many others. Find a Borders Guide book in the cottage upon your arrival to get some ideas of where to go and what to see.

The village of Stow is a half a mile walk down a private driveway. In the village is a new Coffee shop/Cafe/Art Gallery, which has a small play area for children. There is also a post office/grocery store/newspaper shop in the village. You can also take a bus from the village into Edinburgh, which takes approx. 1 hour.

Mountain Biking and Walks: The Glentress Forest, located 17 miles away, (near Peebles) is a haven for mountain biking enthusiasts. It is meant to be the best center in the UK for mountain biking, and potentially the best in Europe. It has an excellent cafe and bike shop which has bike rentals, demonstrations, lessons, events. The paths are designated for bikers or hikers, which makes life easier for everyone. Walkers would also find this place beautiful. The landscape is stunning and it is well worth a trip. The drive down the road from Stow to Thornylee up towards Peebles is one of the prettiest drives in the Borders.

Plentiful and stunning walks in the region. You can also have some great walks on the farm -- but stick to the paths to avoid the odd bull or two that we have on the farm!

BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY LOCATION AND A NICE BREAK FROM THE BUSTLE IN EDINBURGH!

  • 5 out of 5
Six of us (including two children - ages 9 and 10) stayed at the cottage while visiting Edinburgh for the Tattoo and visiting the North Sea. The cottage is as advertised (a little confused by the shower operation but we figured it out), very homelike and well-kept. The kids really enjoyed the pony and looking at the sheep. A good value all around. The town of Stow is very close and has a great café for brunch. The only recommendation we would make to the owner would be to put distances (mileage) in the directions...we arrived after dark and missed some of the clues!

Owner's Response: Hello Annette and Grace -- thank you for the lovely review, we are so pleased that you enjoyed staying at the Cottage. I will put the mileage in the directions as you rightly point out -- thank you! Wendy

CLACHAN COTTAGE - WHAT AN EXPERIENCE

  • 5 out of 5
We're just about to visit Clachan Cottage for the 4th time, and I would urge anyone who wants to enjoy the countryside in all its splendour to visit. We have 3 young boys, and it's an ideal retreat for them, somewhere they can play safely, enjoy seeing the animals, ride their bikes to their hearts content and enjoy fresh Scottish air - in fact our boys have again chosen 2 weeks in Scotland as opposed to 2 weeks abroad!!
Iver and Wendy always make us feel welcome, and make everything very easy to enjoy.
If you're still in doubt..............try it, it's fantastic

Clachan Cottage is located just outside of Stow, a small village nestled in a valley, 25 miles from Edinburgh. It is a rural hill farming area with great access to Edinburgh up the A7 road. Many towns of historical interest are nearby. The valley is surrounded by dramatic green hills and has amazing views. It is extremely quiet and peaceful -- one can hear the burn outside flowing from inside the cottage. It is a great getaway for families or couples as it is so relaxing, though there are numerous things to do nearby -- historical sightseeing, visits to Edinburgh, visits to the beach or to a nearby spa, etc. One half mile walk down the drive brings you into the village, which has an excellent coffee shop/gallery and a post office/small grocery store. The main artery road to Edinburgh is just a stone's throw from the post office and one can take a bus to Edinburgh from here (1 hour). There is something to do for every age in this lovely area.

Other Activities: Book to stay in August and experience the awesome Edinburgh Festival!!!

Golf: Local Golf Courses:

Torwoodlee 4 miles extract from their website 'with over 100 years of history, Torwoodlee is a picturesque 18-hole 6,021 yard, par 69 golf course. Flanked by the River Gala and set amongst a mix of mature woodland and rolling parkland, it is one of the most challenging golf courses in the Scottish Border. Torwoodlee is a must on any golfing holiday itinerary for societies or golfing enthusiasts.

Individuals, golf societies and visitors will find great hospitality and the warmest of Border welcomes.

Lauder which is 5 miles away has a nine hole golf course, it has its own website.

Ski: There is an artificial ski slope located 20 miles away, in the Pentland Hills, just on the Edinburgh ring road. Very popular with the kids and first-time skiers!
