The house of the Skalidis family was built in 1900 in the heyday of the traditional settlement of Gonia. Following recent restoration work it now fully caters for modern household needs, while its architectural style remains unspoiled.

The stone-built house is constructed on two levels. Through the courtyard you enter the ground floor, with a fully equipped open-plan kitchen, a spacious dining and sitting room with TV and fireplace, a bathroom/WC and two bedrooms, one of which has a double bed and en-suite bathroom/WC. Both bedrooms are airconditioned.

From the veranda of the upper level, you access a large airconditioned room that includes a cosy mezzanine area with two beds, and a separate study. Two sofas in the sitting area can also accommodate two people for sleeping. Another bathroom/WC connects with the same space. From the veranda you also enter another bedroom, with A/C, a double bed and en-suite bathroom/WC.

The house also has a fine garden with a swimming pool under orange trees. A vine pergola is located just in front of the house and belongs to it. Parking space for two cars is available.

Wherever you stand you can enjoy the splendid view, overlooking a broad green valley, the surrounding villages on the foothills, and beyond the peaks of the White Mountains. The house is designed to ensure privacy and peace of mind amid the majestic Cretan scenery.

Gonia is a centrally located village on the island of Crete, 15 min. drive from the beaches of the north coast and 30 min. from the superb beaches of the south coast. Walking through the olive groves will bring you to the surrounding villages, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of wine under the mulberry tree among local friendly people. The rural area is ideal for hiking through gorges, olive groves and vineyards. Within a few hundred meters from the house you'll find a supermarket, pharmacy and a traditional tavern, where you can enjoy various dishes of the famous Cretan cuisine, cooked with fresh, locally produced ingredients.

About Konstantinos Skalidis

Konstantinos Skalidis is the 4th generation owner of this property. On a professional level, he is a highly experienced accredited lecturer-guide for educational and archaeological tours of Crete and Greece more generally, and has also written on the history and culture of Greece. He supervised the restoration and renovation of the old family home, which means so much to him, respecting its traditional architectural style and endeavouring to preserve its original feel and atmosphere.

Should you be interested, you can arrange with him guided excursions to any sight,museum, i.e.Knossos and the Heraklion museum, he can accompany you to hikes, i.e through the Samaria gorge, or to the summit of Psiloritis(2456m), at reasonable prices.

Ideal holiday villa for a family

The property has absolutely everything we needed as an extended family of 8 staying on Crete. All modern conveniences and yet the historical character of the building shows through and makes for a much more interesting visit. The pool area is surrounded by citrus trees bringing welcome shade. The village of Gonia is rural and quiet, just how we hoped it would be. It has a well stocked village shop and an excellent taverna, both within easy walking distance of the house. We enjoyed excellent beaches nearby on both the north and south coasts.

Beatifully renovated cretan house

We didn't quite expect it to offer so many amenities and were surpised by how well they have been integrated in such an old house. The decoration of the interior is reminiscent of Crete . We also made use of the pool in the garden, which is really nice.

Magnificent property full of atmosphere

We're coming to the end of our stay in this delightful traditional house conversion, and only have favourable impressions. It is actually even better than the website description, and is kept in immaculate condition by its careful and considerate owner. Everything has been well arranged and lives up to and beyond expectations. Last night Kostas cooked a magnificent meal for us (no meat, as my wife is vegetarian), showing us the secrets for those special Cretan flavours! We have spent most of our days touring the middle section of the island, swimming and hiking - yesterday we descended the wonderful Aradaina gorge. Crete is a world of its own, with so much to do. Even the nearby town of Rethymno is a delightful place to spend a day exploring. Kostas is a veritable treasure house of knowledge on Cretan and Greek history, so we benefitted greatly from chatting with him over wine and olives. We very much hope to come back soon.

Das Haus der Familie Skalidis hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Schon die liebevolle Gestaltung der Räume ist aussergewöhnlich! Dazu die Lage etwas abseits des touristischen Geschehens und trotzdem so, dass man problemlos sowohl das Meer im Norden wie im Süden in kurzer Zeit erreichen kann...! Dazu ist der freundliche Empfang durch die hervorragend deutsch sprechenden Gastgeber zu erwähnen. Alles in allem ein gelungener Aufenthalt, unbedingt zu wiederholen! P. Weyden

Es waren wunderbare Ferien. Das Haus hat uns sehr gut gefallen: wunderbar restauriert und mit viel Charme!!! Wir freuen uns schon auf das nächste Mal!! Die Besitzer sind sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit und geben gute Tipps für einen gelungenen Urlaub. Rundum perfekt!!! Sehr schöne, ruhige Lage, wunderbarer Blick und im Dorf gibt es einige Tavernen, in denen man gut essen kann. Das Meer ist in der Nähe und im Haus ist der Rummel aber weit weg und alles ist ruhig! The beautiful old town of Rethymnon , a very well preserved venetian-ottoman town, is only 8 km away. You can not just enjoy a walk through the narrow streets of the town or enjoy swimming; it is also a pleasure being there after sunset. The nightlife promises a variety of experience, from music bars with international repertoire, to modern music concerts, traditional music events and quite a few prominent restaurants.

Since our village is so centrally located, you may visit the towns of Chania or Heraklion very easily; it's an hour's drive. One day excursions will enable you to walk through the Samaria gorge, or numerous other gorges, the owner can give you exact information, you can even hike to tht summit of Psiloritis - 2456m- ,the famous Ida mountain.

Another day's excursion can be a visit to the excavation of Knossos and the museum of Heraklion, to various medieval - byzantine- churches, beatiful renaissance monasteries or countless beaches.
